Friends are going in July with their son and family. I know it's a ski dest. for the wealthy . Myself ,I would prefer going back to Tahoe or Lake Powell if I was going to go West.

Vail is beautiful in the summertime, also you get rid of the rich crowd and substitute for local ski bum crowd. You might even run into Ryan and Trista from the Bachelorette.

Well, these are people of means who can go just about anywhere. I was just curious why they picked Vail. Men are golfers ,women are shoppers and theres a 11 yr. old who can have fun seeing and riding horses or something.

I've long enjoyed summertime in "winter" destinations, particularly late summer when crowds are gone.

My dad lived in Park City for years (I lived there for about a year, then was in SLC in grad school during some of his tenure there) I almost never went up to ski - visited far more in the summer.

But I also like to visit Europe in the winter. I hate crowds (though I did love to ski) All sorts of fun summer activities - without the heat! Mountain biking, hiking, I suppose golf ;-) Also things like movie festivals, beer & wine & food festivals etc. They have infrastructure for crowds (hotels, parking) so over the past 20 years have tried to expand to become true four season resorts.

I know I sound like a broken record about the place but that's one of the reasons I'm so high on Bend and central Oregon. You can go ANY time of year and find gobs of cool outdoor stuff to do, it's a young (or at least at heart) and vibrant crowd, the weather rocks. Good. Stuff. Oh ... BEER!!!
