Looks like we may be heading for a downtown trip. Dad has us booked at the D. What should we ask for room wise. Would prefer semi-quiet. Two beds non smoking not on top of a bank of elevators is my only requests.

    Do these rooms have safes??

Yes, they should have a safe. To avoid noise, you can choose a high floor room at booking online, which costs about 10% more, I believe. You may be able to get that when you check in, however, if you ask for it. Also, rooms over Fremont Street are subject to the most noise, so you can make a request to be away from Fremont.

Rooms facing Fremont can be noisy, especially the lower floors.

And, the rooms are away from the elevators, so you shouldn't ever hear them. They all have safes in them, but not all of them have fridges if you need one. But, you can rent one.
It's not a bad hotel to stay at. That's my normal place to stay downtown. Rooms aren't huge, but there's larger than other places downtown.

High floor facing east should avoid any real noise. The Fremont Street stages have minimal noise, but on the west-facing rooms, you can get some really bad noise when there is an event at the Downtown Las Vegas Events Center.

I've never stayed in a room where I could see out the window. There's that huge wrap covering one side. I assume it helps with the heat in the summer which is good but I like to look out the window.

Starting to lean away from the D at this point after a review in another thread. Will keep all this in mind as we decide. Appreciate all the input to date.
We may take a room at DTG.

I've gone the other way, and am happier with my room at The D, on the basis of the stuff posted in the other thread :D

I'll likely shoot for one of the corner kings, but I'm definitely willing to give it a spin, and if not, I'll just try another spot next time.

I've only ever stayed at the Nugget when downtown, having previously been a Wynn/Palazzo man for years.

From everything I've read, DTG appears to be very nice, and the only downside to the place seems to be some gambling issues.

    fenway68,

I've stayed at The D, the Downtown Grand (four times), the Golden Nugget (at least ten times), the Plaza (maybe five times), the Four Queens, and El Cortez (tower rooms). I prefer the Downtown Grand over The D if the price is comparable. It's got a much nicer pool area and a sort of "boutique hotel" vibe. The walk to the FSE is literally a minute or two, well-lit and safe. Downside is the dead casino and constant changes to it that mean you won't know what's there until you get there.

If you want a quiet room, ask for east side, up and back at The D and west tower, west side at the Downtown Grand. East (main) tower, east side at the Downtown Grand is OK, but you can get noise from the Gold Spike night club around the weekends.

My SO and I were planning our 5th trip to Vegas (together) and decided that it was time to give staying Downtown a try, especially since we'd been in the area for a few days the year before during the Life is Beautiful festival. Because it was relatively cheap (even for a Saturday), we decided to just go ahead and book the corner king suite - the highest level of room that they offer that isn't a penthouse - and were pretty jazzed to arrive.

It was awful. The bathroom was updated (shoddily) and it looked like they'd put some new curtains on the windows in 2002, but other than that the furnishings and everything else was straight out of the early 80s - or prior. The room was minuscule, the outside noise so loud that you might as well have been sleeping on Fremont, the internet never worked for more than a few minutes (when it worked), smoke/funky smells, dirty carpet, ripped vinyl on the chairs, scratchy sheets that you could see right through - the works. After much back and forth with the front desk about the internet - after finally getting someone who gave a rip - we'd had it. We weren't going to spend the next several days there, that was for damn sure. Booked the next 2 nights at one of our favorites, the Trump, and I went downstairs to (nicely, of course) tell the manager on duty that the room was in no way acceptable and did not match the descriptions or photos that their own website provides, and that we'd be checking out the next morning. Since we'd booked direct, the only cost we had was for that night that we checked in.

The scene on the casino floor seemed fine enough, though lots of cigarette smoke and a bit claustrophobic with the low ceilings. However, I'd personally recommend against staying there.

I'm in The D right now and the rooms look like the pictures on the website. The furniture is in good condition, the renovated bathroom is still a bit spartan, but clean and functional. It's not like they are charging $150/night weeknights. I'm paying something like $29/night tonight and Thursday and $79/night Friday and Saturday. Even with the resort fee, it's a good room for the price. You need to understand what you are getting for your money. It's a good value and the rooms are large for downtown.

I get that some people aren't going to like a basic hotel room. Sometimes it is better to spend more money and get what you want on vacation.

We enjoyed staying at the D. We've stayed at several properties on the strip and downtown and would definitely stay there again. I asked for a refrigerator and they gave us a corner room. (I did flash a $20 so it may have helped but the clerk next to me was only offering that upgrade at $25 a night, so I was happy) It was pretty nice. My mother-in-law was in a regular room and it was just fine too. My only complaint was the noise and I blame myself more than anyone. As I said, we were with my mother-in-law so kept earlier hours than we normally would have so the music from the stage really bothered me. I am NOT a light sleeper and normally this type of thing does not bother me but it did this time. Not enough to make me want to change rooms though. My mother in law was on a lower floor on the same side but almost to the end of the hallway and she it didn't bother her at all.

We liked that they had plenty of outlets for phones and such. The elevators were definitely different but again we enjoyed the "technology". :)

That doesn't look half bad at all. Making it a tough choice. Glad we have two great options to try out a full downtown stay.

The one other thing I missed was that it took flipping forever for the water to get hot in the shower. I felt guilty wasting water but it took a good couple of minutes to get hot. Best beds we slept in for the entire trip though. We were there for 7 nights and stayed off strip for the last 3.

Whichever place you pick, hope you have fun and have no reason to spend much time in any room. ;-)

I'm going to upgrade to that, as I need a fridge for my meds.

    Have a good trip, Stig!
