I got the minimum, $1200 handpay last weekend at a local...this was the first time I didn't tip on a handpay, and I have to admit...it felt weird.

At first I was totally prepared to tip the slot attendant $20, she was really prompt to come over and she unlocked my machine so I could keep playing while she did the paperwork. But then I started thinking about how stupid it was that I needed a hand pay for a $1200 hit... I mean, just a few weeks prior I went to the cage and cashed a $2100 TITO...just print me a damn $1200 TITO!!! I was also annoyed because the handpay barely brought me back to even for the day

When she returned with my money, she brought over two other people with her... one suit and one other slot attendant...there was no way I was going to tip all three when only one actually did anything!

After I got paid, all three said congrats and awkwardly stood there for 5-10 seconds waiting for a tip, I turned back to the machine and kept playing, they got the message and walked away. As I kept playing, I started to feel bad for the slot attendant that did all the work...

I cashed out and went to try to find her to tip her $20, but I couldn't find her... I finally gave up and left.

I just thought I would share this story since there is often the question "should you" or "why do you" tip on handpays...

That's an odd situation to be in.

Happened to me last trip. Only one slot attendant for the handpay. Tipped him $20. Kept the other $20

At least you went to find her. Maybe next time it could be $5 or $10 in that situation. A middle ground. I agree with not tipping all three, bringing buddies along just feels greedy. I know it's common, but still feels off.

As you mentioned, the win basically helped you get even.
    No need for a tip.
Next time just act surprised and say "Wow, its my first hand pay." and they won't be expecting a tip.

    My book....under $2,000, no tip.
On a cruise ship I had a $200 hit. Two people came over for a hand pay and they announced it over the speakers. For $200!!! I grind my teeth just thinking about it.

I am guessing you are just "ranting". But, the reason you did not get a TITO is because of the IRS.

My favorite machine :) I tend to play $1 not $5 ones. I gave $20 last time I had a handpay ...it's been a few years though.

I think the fact that you kept playing actually made it less awkward. You made it seem like some statutory process that just slowed down your degenning.

When I tip, and there is more than one person, I give them the $20 (or whatever) and make a point of saying something like "can you split it between you?" They have told me yes every single time. I got a hand pay on $800 at a locals casino recently and still tipped on that, but that one kind of bugged me because there really is no reason for an $800 hand pay.

Lovin this thread. When 3 show up at your hand pay,,,gotta be a tough day for them. I would also only give $20 on a $1200 handpay. I remember one $4000 hand pay and they gave me all $100's. No 20's. I didn't tip them. Bastard old lady that I am.

in 1995 my husband got a 2700 dollar handpay on dollar Wheel of Fortune. I went to the restroom while he waited to get paid. I only found out 10 years later that he didn't tip the girl.

it bothered me for quite a while. two years ago he got a 2,000 dollar handpay on Twilight Zone. He tipped the girl that paid him, but i drew the line at tipping the three suits that showed up.

    hmmm

I think the suits are there to just supervise the payout- I always tip on a jackpot payout to the attendent doing all the work but its limited to $20 regardless of the amount of jackpot - :rolleyes2:

Don't the pool and split tips at every casino anyways?

Im a decent tipper, especially at the tables where I am likely the only one tipping. But When thinking about tipping, always remember you weren't gambling with their money, it was yours. If they want some of the win, let them gamble for it, not bring more unnecessary people to hopefully squeeze a little more out of you.

Probably cause Cruise ship payouts are the worst in the business, fewer and further between.

At my local they don't pool tips, each dealer carries around their own tot box to each table they go to.

I'm sure that's the case. Not sure why people think that having more than 1 person show up to pay you is because they're all trying to get paid. I'm sure it's standard protocol to make sure that there is a witness to the payout so there's no issues with discrepancy if a player were to claim they were short paid or something along those lines.

Its changed over the years. It used to be 3 people showed at up MSS for a $1, $2 or $4,000 handpay. One paid, one watched and the third reset the machine. Now, one person does everything. I usually tip the one person $20. The bartender gets a better tip.
