Outdoor store close to strip

Ok not sure this is the right place to add this, so be free to move this topic.

First i'm from Europe and all outdoor gear /supplies are very expensive at our place. In 10 days we will be in Vegas for a week, and maybe try to go to see some outdoor stores there.
Want to buy some hiking boots / socks, and if we can find some nightcache pins.

Does someone here know some good stores were we should look, and is it easy to get there. Were not sure yet if we want to rent a car.

Hope someone can help us were coming back in may / june and then we will do a little road trip ( bryce, zion, GC) so would be nice if we have our gear before then and try it out in our country.

 

Bass Pro Shop is right across the freeway and a bit south of the Strip at Silverton. They should have everything you are looking for.

 

Give yourself a couple hours to spend at Bass Pro Shops. I'd recommend breakfast at the Silverton coffee shop or there is an IHOP or Denny's nearby Silverton. IHOP and Denny's are both ubiquitous American breakfast chain restaurants. Certainly worth visiting if you're from out of the country and have never been to one before. The Bass Pro Shops is a large store selling fishing, hunting, firearms, ammunition, clothing, boats, and it has various stuffed animals on display throughout the store. They also sell hiking and camping food and equipment. The prices are quite reasonable. Silverton operates a free shuttle from the Strip a the Caesars Forum Shops if you don't have a car and don't want to taxi or bus there. http://silvertoncasino.com/shuttle/

 

If you do rent a car, you should check out REI - not close to the Strip, but amazing outdoor equipment store!

 

I do like the cafe at Silverton! Sit at the counter, read the paper, shoot the breeze, catch the news or sports on one of the tubes, eat. Good stuff. And I would imagine that BPS would be a hooterific stereotypically American excess to someone from offshore.

And if you do get out and about by some chance, Vegas has two REIs, which specialize in exactly what you're wanting.

(though I admit that these days, I order most of my stuff online from Sierra Trading Post - as far as I know, they don't have a retail store in Vegas :-(

 

Thanks i think we would check the bass pro shop saw on there site some prices and still cheaper as in holland!

Were staying at Flamingo So this would be perfect. Only this is only for hotel guest? Or if we gamble a Little at silverton would it be ok?

 

Idea of having some breakfast and then visit bps is a good one!

We've been to Denny's before in the US not my fav.... IHOP never tried, but if it the same thing as Denny's we would try the breakfast at silverton!

 

You know, just as an FYI, REI is a membership co-op and annually rebates some 10% of member purchases. If you are really loading up on gear -- and assuming you can join with a foreign address -- it might just pay to cab or better yet just rent a cheap car for the day and head on over, even if for just this one go around. Then again, it's not cash rather REI credit ... hmm, mail order, next year's trip to Vegas?

Silverton coffee shop if very good. If you've been to Denny's, you can skip IHOP.

 

If you've missed both you're still fine.

 

Bass Pro Shops is having its winter sale now. Might still be on when you're in town. I imagine that you can get the shuttle without being a Silverton guest.

Online or mail order, wouldn't work i guess, mostly they dont ship to the Netherlands.

Think we will be rent a cheap car for a couple of days, we also want to go to lee canyon to do some skiing

 

IHOP is a little bit better than Denny's but not worth seeking out. The Sundance Cafe at Silverton is good for breakfast even if it may run few dollars more. Silverton also has a new restaurant WuHu Noodle that I just couldn't get enough of. And the casino is one of my faves. Don't know about hiking equipment but I was pleasantly surprised by the variety of items BPS stocked.

 

Bass Pro runs a clear second to REI in hiking and biking items. REI focuses on it, and has an informed staff and lots of specialized inventory, while it's pretty much a side line at Bass Pro.

 

Were doubting wich we will visit, if we check there websites it think rei's offer more things we are looking for.. maybe some sports gear as well.
we want staff that can informed us on what hiking boots are the best for us... if we will renting a car, maybe it will be REI we're going to visit other wise we will get the free shuttle tot BPS.

A key proviso. Bass sells everything from boats to trailer-hitch grease. REI is a specialty active/mountain shop not unlike a favorite hometown outfitter but with the advantage of a larger reach and presence.

 

Bass is kind of Target outdoor goods. REI is for someone serious about climbing, hiking or biking. They were started here in Seattle back in the ice age by Jim Whitaker, who climbed Everest with RFK. I think it was Everest, but as you know the Ice Age was long ago.
