Went to Vegas in the early 80's and then not again until about 10 years ago. Obviously there had been alot of changes. This was before City Center so the Boardwalk was still on the strip and super run down.

Sahara, Riviera, Slots a Fun, Imperial Palace Circus Circus, Tropicana, New Frontier even Bills were all pretty much run down and you wondered how they survived.

Obviously casinos come and go and wane in popularity.

My questions is in the next 10 years or so, which casinos will go the way of Sahara? Run down and resorting to $1 hot dogs and beer to get people though the doors. Sahara was once a nice place remember.

Besides the obvious Circus Circus which seems to be in a perpetual state of decay, which ones do you see crumbling?

I would probably go with Excalibur or Harrahs.

If you include Hooters as strip instead of off-strip, then that is the obvious answer. Otherwise, I would say the Trop. Harrahs and Excal are bad (as is Flamingo), but their corporate parents won't let them fall too far into decay. The Trop poured money over the past several years, apparently with little impact on the bottom line. Considering that, I can't see the current owners wanting to spend much money to maintain it

UK is right about the corporations not letting them fall too deep into shambles.

Independent joints will be the ones to look out for.

Don't be fooled by looks. It's business - whether "run-down" or not. Many of the properties named in this category actually made money during the recession whereas the upscale places struggled. Everyone doesn't want or need the shiny and new.

Tropicana is the most obvious answer, although we have yet to see what Penn National will do with the place. Treasure Island could decline badly, since they are no longer in a network and they completely abandoned their attractive theme for... well, basically nothing. CET's lower end properties could be in trouble due to their bankruptcy. I could see the Flamingo turning into the Riviera Part II very easily.

I think Trop could be in trouble.

It is at the end of the road all by itself. Nothing special about going there to drive business.

Lux and MB do well because they are somewhat unique and part of the Mlife family. MBay just has so much going for it vs Trop is just an old casino and hotel.

If CET sells Harrah's or Bally's, they could become grind joints but their locations are so good that it's unlikely. Circus Circus does a tremendous business. While many pan it, it has many fans. It knows its demographic very well.

Probably, except Casino Royale is a total shithole, yet (1) seems to keep attracting hotel investment, and (2) is home to literally the most profitable Denny's in the country. Like, when they closed for renovations last year, it had to be disclosed in their annual report, because of what a dramatic impact on their revenue that place has.

I think it's going to be TI. Not all that soon, but it'll happen.

CR's smallish size compared to the other spots helps it, I think. I forgot about that Denny's being the biggest moneymaker. That primo location is the tits.

I'm inclined to think Trop and SLS take hits before TI.

TI has so much potential for more. On our first several trips to Vegas we enjoyed going there. I still pop in from time to time but I think the de-theming hurts that place more than any other

Because the Strip properties are either owned by CET or Mlife(MGM or whatever) it's hard to say. But my guess is the Flamingo and Harrahs.

Maybe even The STRAT , Mirage, and T.I.

I think Excaliber will go the route of Circus Circus. Run down but profitable.

This is a cash cow for MGM, tower rooms were renovated in 2013, I don't see this going anywhere.

I loved the Riviera, but it was unprofitable and its location was coveted by the Convention Center Authority.

I'm surprised so many people are saying Trop. Penn Gaming, albeit bland and likes to turn most of their casinos into movie theaters, is no slouch and will soon offer many of its loyal Hollywood Casino players stays at the Trop. They aren't going anywhere with their sole strip property.

As for strip properties in danger...TI, SLS (back to back Sahara's?), Stratosphere . Hooters if you count it as a "strip" property.

The Penn Gaming connection can save it. They just need to market well to their players outside Vegas to get them in there. We have gone there a few times and just don't get thrilled enough to stay as we lust back towards MGM or NYNY, MBay, etc.

I doubt Penn bought the Trop without the intention of sticking some money into it. We'll see. As said already CC has a nice niche market and makes money. Even after the demise of Westward Ho, Stardust and Riv it's still doing well. I could see the TI going (further) downhill. I'm not a fan of the Excal but it offers cheap rooms and a very good location.

Harrahs and Tropicana. Whenever I go into the Trop, it is dead.

Every time I go to Harrah's it is pretty busy.

Yes, it stays busy. I am guessing it is doing well financially. Not sure why some think it will die. Many casinos would be thrilled to have half as many people as you usually see at Harrahs.

Harrah's and Flamingo have the combination of location and affordability.
