The Las Vegas Raiders?

ALAMEDA, Calif. -- While a leaked memo from UNLV president Len Jessup said representatives of the Oakland Raiders will be in Las Vegas on Friday to check out potential stadium sites, team owner Mark Davis would offer only a cryptic comment.

"In typical Raider fashion," Davis said with a laugh over the phone from the Bay Area, "I can neither confirm nor deny."

Sources, though, have confirmed to ESPN.com that Davis will be in Las Vegas, and he reportedly will meet with Las Vegas Sands chairman and CEO Sheldon Adelson.

The Sands Corp. announced Thursday that it was lending its support to build a $1 billion domed stadium on a vacant 42 acres of land recently purchased by UNLV near the corner of Tropicana Avenue and Koval Lane across from McCarran International Airport.

"Correspondingly, the Sands leadership team let us know that officials from the Oakland Raiders are scheduled to travel to Las Vegas and tour locations around the valley for a potential new home, and they have asked us to meet them at our 42-acre site on Friday morning to answer questions about that site," Jessup wrote in the memo, which was first reported by Nevada political reporter Jon Ralston.

UNLV is looking for a new home for its football program, which has played at 35,500-seat Sam Boyd Stadium some nine miles from campus on the eastern edge of the city since 1971.

always hearing random rumblings for a NFL team in Central Texas.

A few years ago, a well to do Gentleman was trying to lure the Vikings to S.A.

Might as well, since 1/3 of Cali. has moved to Texas in the past 10 years.

As long as UNLV ends up with a new facility, that's all that matters. Knowing the NFL, they will court at least five cities and play them aginst each other. The only reason it's sure they will move is because Godell wants them out of Oakland.

 

Zero percent chance of this happening. NFL has made clear that it has no interest in moving a team to Las Vegas, due to the legality of sports gambling.

 

And yet...

Given the NFL’s attitude toward gambling, along with the league’s past statements regarding staging games in Las Vegas, the knee-jerk reaction to the prospect of the Las Vegas Raiders is that it will never happen. Curiously, the league isn’t willing to say that, yet.

“We do not have a comment,” NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy told PFT via email. In 2013, McCarthy had a comment; he told the Las Vegas Review-Journal that legalized gambling in Las Vegas would likely keep the NFL from putting the Pro Bowl or preseason games there.

Ultimately, it doesn’t have to make sense or be consistent. It just has to get 24 of 32 votes from the league’s owner. The location of any team reflects a collective decision of NFL ownership, and there’s no rule or policy that automatically makes Las Vegas or any other location off limits. Plenty of factors go into the decision regarding whether and where a franchise moves.

UNLV hasn't had any issues. Plus casino sports books will know if there are "fishy" bets being made.

And in reality it costs too much money now to bribe a player to throw a game. To really pull off a fix in NFL you need the qb. They make so much money now that gamblers don't have enough to pay them. The Black Sox played in an era where players were paid normal wages and some had to take other jobs in off season. Players then worried about paying their mortgage and kids braces. Now they have way to much money to worry about that.

 

UNLV doesn't play in the NFL so that has nothing to do with this. And I agree with you, it would be near impossible to get a match fixed, it's just that NFL doesn't like sports betting and therefore this isn't happening. I'd love to see it but sadly, no chance.

 

I'm not privy to the NFL's stance of Fantasy sports, but it seems all the other leagues are embracing them. Thats gambling at any internet connected device. So I can be in Green Bay on my cell phone or in Vegas and go to a casino. Same thing.

 

No chance of it happening. The league would have to approve the move and the league won't even allow players to be at events associated with gambling or casinos. In fact, the NFL, in conjunction with other major leagues, have spent years keeping NJ without sports betting.

The league stance on gambling is well known... so, no... there's no way an NFL team will move to Vegas.

 

I love that a league with popularity that is based on various forms of betting, is so anti gambling... Oh the hypocrisy! Yeah JAX/TENN on Thursday night was so well viewed for the quality of the game!

 

Professional sports in Vegas would be great for the city. The home team may never have that advantage. Not that we need another excuse to visit Vegas but how about going to see your team play. I am about 30 min from Green Bay and although not impossible Packer tickets are not abundantly available. If they set aside 10,000 seats for visiting fans I know packer fans will fill those seats easily when they play there.

If Las Vegas wants to be the entertainment capitol of the world professional sports should be involved.

 

Mark Davis would have to impersonate his dad and fight the league over his right to move there.
They don't even want to play exhibitions in Nevada due to sports betting.

Which is pretty dumb ... whoever said you need proximity to gamblers to get bribed to fix games/shave points?

 

Let's not let logic get in the way of what the NFL does. Few sports orgs short of UCI in the heyday of Armstrong and FIFA do as good of a job looking fans straight right in the eye while saying one thing and meaning pretty much just the opposite.

OK, there is the IOC, as well.

 

And not to mention the water issues in Las Vegas. This would just magnify it that much worse.
