This is crazy to me. I could never do that. I take my envelope in my hand and walk it through. I am too paranoid to even leave it in my purse through screening.

That's not true. Yes, only an idiot would do that, but it is still your property, and you don't "deserve" to have it stolen from you.

What happens when you walk through the scanner with $10,000 in your hand, and the goon there decides the cash is probably from a drug deal? Do you deserve to lose that? I don't think so, but you can bet that it has happened.

What does your example have to do with cash in checked luggage?

Can people really be that stupid to put cash in their checked luggage? C'mon man
I don't put anything in my checked luggage that I cannot afford to lose or be without for a few days.Tthat includes money, medicines and important documents.

"So the combination is 1-2-3-4-5....that's the kind of thing an idiot would have on their luggage!"

Doesn't really apply here, but I kept hearing this quote while reading the thread. :woohoo:

If you put your hand in fire, you do deserve to get burned.

That having it in your hand is no protection from civil forfeiture
TSA has siezed assets from the screening line before

Yes, but it is much much more likely that thieves will steal from your checked bags.
It is just plain stupid to put valuables in checked bags.

Thieves indeed...but yes anything over 5 grand in hand or otherwise makes me uncomfortable...wire it ahead if it's bigger than that

cash has never been an issue for me in my carry-on.

I've had 100k in my carry-on at LAS, put it through the x-ray and it comes out the other side every time.

but that's LAS where they see lots of cash come through there. I doubt I would be very happy about having that much cash through another city, especially a smaller city where they have nothing better to do than hassle you.

although I have heard first hand stories of people being harassed for cash at LAS if they "look suspicious".

one of my host's bigger players called him desperately from the airport where they had detained him and were asking him questions about where he got the 180k cash in his satchel since he looks like a drug dealer and not a big player.

You guys are being super harsh about this today. We are often asked about getting cash to/from Vegas and this thread is "another reason not to put cash in checked luggage", which apparently is something people do.

I'm a pretty savvy traveler, so I know that you don't put anything in checked luggage that you can't afford to lose, including cash, jewelry, electronics, medicine, etc. Not only because it can be stolen by any of the many people who come in contact with it between the gate and the destination, but because I've had enough luggage not show up on the carousel on the other end that I always carry my toiletries, and some spare undies in my carry on.

I've never had the kind of cash to do anything other than carry it in my wallet and keep an eye on it, unfortunately. Maybe next trip. :)

Seems that if you are planning on betting big money it's best to wire it to the casino. Unfortunately in this day and age in this circumstance you are guilty until proven innocent and your money is bye bye. I'm with Sonya- I hope some day to have to worry about this!

Do they ever say anything if you walk through security with it in your hand?

The laws for seizure for almost no reason are rather scary. Do not want to hijack this thread, but the first link will lead you to more stories than you want. It is wrong, but at the same time, I am not going to get one grey hair over it. Chances are so very, very slim and the amount I ever carry is not life changing.

I often have $5-$10k and most is in my carryon...buried deep enough that any quick thief or TSA agent is not going to get it. There might be some buried in my checked bag, but it would take a fair amount of digging to find it. A little stupid maybe, but after 40+ trips, never lost a buck. I actually think that is safer than holding in my hand going through the screening. It just gives them a reason to question things.
