This whole board grew out of an argument on alt-vacation-las.vegas over whether or not Main Street Station is a dump. :)

Care to give a bit more information? I'm not doubting you, but a little more info would be nice. Did you stay there? What was wrong with it? I've heard some things, but some details from someone who stayed there would be more helpful than "it's a dump".

Several years ago our travel department asked me to check out a few of the lower-cost so-called "extended stay" properties in the Las Vegas area while I was there. One was indeed managed by Siegel (ala Artisan, Rumour, etc.) but not badged with their name at the time. Another was Budget Suites then behind the old Stardust.

IIRC I only checked out three of them and all three were bona fide dumps!

The one by the Stardust was particularly bad. Very trailer-trashy was the way I described it. TVs and boom boxes blaring and litter and clutter everywhere!

I've heard about loud music and a "criminal element" being a problem at a few of the budget extended-stay properties. When you go to the ratings sites like tripadvisor, the reviews are almost always totally mixed. I know that one man's hovel is another man's castle, but details always help people make decisions. I mean, is it just not the Four Seasons, or was there an actual dead hooker under the bed? ;)

Just driving by and looking at them, and usually where they are located, you can easily tell that siegels are dumps! If they (like restaurants) look really bad from the OUTSIDE, just imagine how they look inside. Dive bars can look bad from the outside and be great on the inside, but I'm not sleeping or eating in them either...

Back then they were trying to promote those places as being a lower cost alternative than the casino hotels or the "usual suspects" (Hampton/Comfort/whatever) for business people staying for more than a day or two. The web sites and brochures showed photos reminiscent of something like Embassy Suites or even Residence Inn.

It was my impression that the actual clientele were the true down and out and those who could not pass a credit check for a regular apartment.

I wish you would expand on this history of the board! [emoji12]

I agree though and I almost posted the same thing... I am interested as well. Even though I would never stay there it is just fascinating to read about different place.

Touche! I am sure I've told the story a dozen times at least. Maybe I should put it somewhere. But yeah, my favorite troll would just say "It's a dump" any time anyone would mention MSS. I was staying there a lot, and admitted it's not a luxury hotel, but it's clean, comfortable, inexpensive, the casino is beautiful, and they gave me free rooms for my teeny-tiny, micro-rolling VP play. It was 1997, I had just taken a "Web Design" class, online at the community college for giggles and threw up a geocities page that had my room and casino photos from my recent trip.

I started adding some FAQ's for common questions asked on the usenet group because I'm a lazy typer. :) Eventually AVLV became non-functional because of the trolls and spam and a huge group moved to a yahoo group email thingie (list serve?), but it got too popular and had to be super moderated because of the sheer numbers of emails people were getting. In late 1998, I got some software for a message board, bought travel2vegas.com and spent about 3 years mostly talking to myself. We had maybe 100 members. It slowly built and started to take off a couple years after that. I'm not sure what year, but Hunter from VegasMate, had this domain name and wasn't developing it, so we made a deal for it. I split the board off to VMB (which is why some old-timers around here still call us T2V) and the rest is history. ;)

MSS is NOT a dump, it's just as you described. Not to hijack the topic (siegels are dumps), but that was interesting what you said about forming VMB. It's probably on here somewhere but how many members does the board have?? Just wondering....

This is fascinating. Especially thinking of where the Internet was 18 years ago [crazy] I remember being on hs on the wild wild west of AOL chat rooms at the time in high school.

Thanks for sharing again... I never read that.

Cant speak to seigal suites select but I have toured budget suites by Orleans. They have a sign out that they do background checks. The unit was clean and modestly furnished. The grounds were well kept. My SIL stayed there a week . I didnt hear any complaints from her.

Back when I was in grad school (we're talking early 1990s here) I discovered Usenet (LOL, among other things). :) I had already survived Fidonet so I did not have any trouble fitting in. The newsgroup (LOL, "newsfroup") :) :) alt.vacation.las-vegas as well as rec.gambling were a couple of those I frequented. Yes, I remember the conversations and the trolls. :)

I don't remember MSS being particularly called a dump (maybe that person was on my block list, a few were) but I was very surprised when places like Stardust (my all-time fave) was called a dump by the fans of such places as Bellagio, TI, and such.

Yeah, a.v.lv was overcome by trolls and spam and most of the normal people gave up on it. For a while I was on another on-line BBS system (I actually forget the name) and then it started to totally die. I got a message to the effect that most everyone had moved over here and that's it. :) :)

The dead body was an old recurring topic on alt.vacation.las-vegas and supposedly happened at the old Del Mar Motel, which was one of those very sleazy motels in the vicinity where LVB and Main St. join south of downtown.

Variations of the story had it under the bed or in the air conditioning duct. (LOL, in the bathtub, minus a kidney?) :) :) :)

I wonder if Snopes has this one? And, OBTW, Snopes appears to be a spin-off of the old Usenet alt.folklore.urban which was also one of my faves.

I just checked Snopes. There's a list of (true) body in hotel room incidents but none of them in Las Vegas.

I consider Seigel to be one of the low (low low) end budget motels. IMHO, not much different than the motels that are near the airport. These places (Siegel Suites) are all around vegas, there is one near downtown and another near Nellis AFB. Seigel offers short and long term stays so you should understand the clientele may be a little "suspect".

Yes, compared to the strip and downtown hotel casinos they could be considered "dumpy" to many. Make sure you read reviews on tripadvisor before you decide to stay there. You get what you pay for, some people will scrimp and save by staying at these motels, others won't go near them. One man's dump is another man's palace.

The worst place I ever stayed at in Vegas was the old Ogden house near the El Cortez (before they refurbished it and renamed it the Cabana Suites). Hollow tile brick walls, decades old air conditioner, windows you could barely look out of but I just needed a place to stay downtown and it was only a few bucks a night. Yes it was a "dump" but I didn't mind staying there because the price was right. Another place that was considered "dumpy" was the old las vegas club. Rooms were old and outdated, carpets and walls worn and stained and cig burned, bathrooms moldy, etc. etc. but I didn't mind staying there because the price was okay.

Would I stay at Seigel Suites? Only if the price was good. I'm looking for rooms during march madness and it is hard to find anything under $100 at most of the downtown and strip hotels (and off strip hotels) so I looked into Seigel Suites. Unfortunately (or fortunately) even they are expensive and I could find some motels near the convention center area (like Royal Resort) that were a better stay at a better price.

I agree with Sonya, I rather get first hand reviews from people who actually stayed at those places before I would label a place a dump or not consider staying at that place. I have stayed in real "dumpy" places in San Francisco and I would consider staying at those places again if I couldn't find any other cheap places to stay at.
