I currently have a 22" non-spinner wheel Travelpro rolling suitcase. I like it a lot and want to get the same model but in the 29" size. Unfortunately that size only comes with spinner wheels.

Does anyone have any advice as to go the spinner route or to find something else? My gut tells me that these wheels look pretty flimsy (on all brands) and when handled by the airline baggage handlers are highly suceptible to breaking. I'm also thinking that getting the wheels fixed will be hard.

Anyone with any experience, input or advice? As always, thanks in advance for your help.

I used to use Delsey luggage with spinners. Delsey is not a cheap brand, but the luggage tended to have a mind of it's own. I'm now using a large 29" Tumi suitcase with spinners. Almost every driver that has met me at LAS has commented on how well it rolls. The Tumi suitcase is higher end, retailing for about $1000. I would recommend A Tumi spinner bag.

Spinners are great. I've had them in all sizes for a few years and they are so much easier to use.

Personally, I got a midrange brand this time and they seem just as robust as the samsonite stuff I had previously.

I have a Travelpro spinner set. No problem so far. I tend to pull it like a inline bag most of the time anyway.

Tumi spinner is the only way to go.

With luggage more than most you get what you pay for.

I have some sampsonite spinners. They work well. If your luggage wheels break and you live close to a sampsonite store you can bring it in and they will repair it free. You don't need to have bought from them. I like that about them.

I've taken my soft-sided roller Delsey carry-on to Asia and Europe and all over the USA and it's been great. My wife's Delsey soft side carry-on spinner, as noted above, marches to its own beat. It's just ok. My Heys hardsided checked bag spinner is great. Got is at Ross dress for less for about $70. I'd never pay the prices for Tumi luggage.

Bottom line is that you can't make generalizations about spinner luggage. Some are better than others.

    1+ on the Delsey
We use the Delsey garmet bags, can use all 4 wheels in "roly poley" mode or tilt & just use the 2.
They have been all over the world with us (wheels haven't broken off yet) & have a metal hangar unit,
instead of the breakable plastic hangar rack, like our old Samsonite.

I bought a spinner suitcase about a year and a half ago and it has held up nicely on a couple intl trips along with the domestic ones when I check a bag.

I held out on buying one but I can tell you that they really do work great

The one I bought was a softsided Samsonite and I found it on sale at Marshall's (if I remember right) for like $199

I'm another Tumi spinner fan. I can't imagine not using a spinner. It's MUCH easier on the body, less pulling on your arms and shoulders. Construction is key though because I have had friends with spinners where the construction is not great and when that happens they can be a bit wobbly. But with a spinner you will no longer be "dragging" your luggage; better for the body!

I use Samsonite spinners from Costco. Great return policy, if you ever need it.
Before I bought it, I asked my high volume traveling brother-in-law what to buy. He recommended a name brand, because they do all the R&D to put out a quality product.
I like the spinners. Easy to handle. And durable.

Since you like your Travelpro, get the big one even though it has spinners.

What are you guys doing with your luggage that only a $600 dollar bag will be well built enough for? Serious question.

I don't think someone has to spend that much but I have to confess I have a thing about luggage, especially Tumi. I also look for sales, which can easily save 30% or more off if you get a good one from the brand itself or the store that carries it.

about 3 years ago I got an offer from harrahs new orleans for a luggage spinner, I really dont remember going to swipe for it but I had the mail offer....oneday about 9 months later seriously i get a package from UPS, inside is a TUMI Tech hardcase spinner, had $500 price tag on it...I use it all the time, i can sit on it without it damaging anything and can even pull someone if they want to sit on it...high quality, as shifter said, only the best

I'll chime in on lower cost spinners. I'm not brand loyal. I like to shop for luggage at Marshalls and TJ Maxx. Once I found the spinners I never looked back. I had a fantastic set of carry-ons. We took them all over Italy. We dragged those things over cobblestone and broken sidewalks, crammed on buses and various modes of transportation. They also survived trips to NYC, San Francisco, Seattle, Vancouver, etc. all cities with pubic transit so we lugged them everywhere. Unfortunately, a bed bug incident at Vdara killed one. The other is still rolling like a champ (I'll have to check the mfr). Its wheels are wide and not terribly high off the ground. So, it has good balance even when stuffed to the gills.

I had trouble finding a replacement for the other - returned 3 or 4 before finding one that would do. I suggest rolling the luggage throughout the store - if it doesn't glide well empty you're doomed when full. If possible add weight to it. I've returned a number of them that weeble and wobbled once full. Those with wheels higher off the ground seem to fall over more easily.

Last year, I purchased one of the those more expensive feather light large spinner suitcases. It was like 3.4lbs empty, which was important since it bulks up quickly after filling it with snorkel equipment. It survived two trips, and ripped on the third. The fabric is just too thin to bear the weight and punctures easily when tossed around. Durability of the spinner wheels have never been an issue for me. My luggage sees a lot of miles.

YMMV with spinners. I picked up one from Ross (pacific?) but the wheels sometimes give me trouble so I have to reset the wheels to get it to work properly. I also had a Samsonite spinner that gave me trouble. That one didn't last very long as it started to warp at the seams. Too bad I didn't know about the Samsonite policy as the wheels split on one that I had.

While the spinners are convenient I don't really have a preference from spinner versus non spinner.

To me it's the weight of the thing, some Samsonite suitcases weight a lot more so that means I can't take as much as some other ultralight suitcases.

Not crazy about Spinners. I still like my old suitcases.
You can get them repaired ya know. I had a small Samsonite that had a wheel blowout. It was retrofitted with larger ones.
I had a TravelPro that needed a new Retractable Handle. Same thing - I had it replaced. Do a search for Luggage repair.

Before our first flight to Las Vegas I purchased a cheap combo from Target. We arrived in Las Vegas minus one of the rollers. On the trip back the zipper got messed up. I took back for a refund and waited for a good sale at Dillard's and purchased a Samsonite that normally sold for around $500 but with the sale only paid around $200. It has made at least 40 trips and still works like it did on the first trip. Our next trip it will stay behind because I purchased a new Travelpro roller that my wife used on a trip to Utah last year that she loved.

I don't have a spinner but do wonder why it took until after the internet was up and well established for somebody to think of putting wheels on luggage.
