So in case you haven't figured it out, I'm taking my niece to Vegas for her 21st bday. I'm thinking that her license expires on her bday. I'm wondering if I should have her renew her under 21 license about 6 weeks before we leave, so it's not expired on her bday. That way we won't have any issues with her getting into places. When she returns back to school she can get another over 21 license. Am I over thinking this? Has anyone had any experience with this? She will be flying in so TSA may also be an issue if her license expires.

Have you asked her when it expires? Any chance she has a passport?

Doesn't everyone renew thier DL before it expires? Don't know your state's policy but in FL in some cases you can renew online instead of going in person. GL

Put it into the "better safe than sorry" category and get it renewed early if you can. Better to go through the hassle and not have any problems than take a risk of there being an issue, IMO. In WA, you can do all that online, so hopefully it won't require a trek to the DMV. ;)

Absolutely renew the license before her birthday or bring an alternate photo ID!

I went to Vegas to celebrate my 21st birthday last year, and I ran into a couple of problems with my expired license. It was a MN license, and when I went to renew it I was given a carbon copy of the renewal paper and they clipped the corner.

When I gave it to cocktail waitresses I had to unfold the paper which was inconvenient to put in and out of my wallet.

Whenever I bought into a table game, the floor had to come over and verify my license. Margarativille at the Flamingo refused to accept my ID and told me to go get my passport or they wouldn't let me buy in.

At the club, I was able to get in, but the bouncer did scrutinize it a bit.

It would probably save her some inconveniences if she's able to get a renewed license or bring a passport or alternate form.

Here in Pennsylvania, under 21 drivers get a different kind of license that's viewed vertically. So, for someone who is over 21 to have a vertical license is a badge of shame, the horrors of having a bouncer look at the license horizontally then to rotate it 90 degrees and show the assembled masses in line that you are totally uncool is too much to take for a 21 year old.

So, back in the day, the drinking age in NJ was 18 and driver's licenses didn't have a photo nor the actual date of birth. They just had a month and year of birth. So about 6 of us went out to celebrate one's birthday, yet one of the guys was a week away from turning 18. So the bouncer grabbed the driver's license and excused himself, went to a phone and called my buddy's mom and said "hey Mrs. Blank, when is Ronnie's birthday, we want to have a party for his 18th......Mom replies, oh, his birthday is next week". Bouncer came back grinning from ear to ear, "come back next week". Ahhhh, 1977, those were the days.

Is it that you are supposed to renew your license 6 months before it expires?

Make sure she has a current license. If she is 21, but has the under 21 license and it's still current, she's good to go.

they are super picky in casinos about carding people. i took my daugter for her 21st and she almost threw out her arm pulling her id out so often. event for simple stuff like breaking a bill.

Only for people 24-70. Everyone else (or if you want an EDL) has to get it in person. http://www.dol.wa.gov/driverslicense/renew.html?hcwp This also mentions the vertical license of shame for people that renew before their 21st birthday.

Michelle - Look up the law for the state where she got the license (or where she'll be getting a new one). The rules are different everywhere.

In NJ when I applied for my DL PERMIT to drive at 17 I gave my DOB as a year older..Lady typed that up and I got my real correct DL a couple weeks after...I recall that permit working for the entire year (1975)

Thanks everyone, I did talk to her and it does expire on her birthday. Ohio will let you renew as early, definitely the best way to go! Thanks everyone!

Glad you checked. It does seem illogical that it would expire just because she turned 21.

Many states issue "different looking" lic for underage.

Ohio law does say it expires on the birthday, and can only be renewed within 30 days of the birthday. I wonder which format they issue if still under 21. Logic escapes me here.

In any event, get a new one. Way too many organizations view an expired license as no longer a valid ID. Like you died or something.

Yeah the expiration date on the license applies to the license to drive.

They're already using the license for ID which it was never intended for.

But then they also want to pretend it doesn't exist because it's expired?

    Utterly illogical.
