Maybe doing a 3 or 4 day trip in March, and am seriously thinking about staying Downtown. Would love to hear what you all like about your favorite DT hotels!

To stay? GN. To play? Cal or MSS. Haven't stayed at DTG but would probably try it out next one I'm there during "pool season". Was going to do that last summer but DTG was as or more expensive than the GN so went with what I knew.

Golden Nugget for sure. Great rooms, awesome food choices.

I think it depends on what's important to you. The Golden Nugget rooms are very nice but, depending on what tower you're in, you might have a longer walk to your room. I am rarely in my room other than to sleep and shower so I am willing to forego a nicer room for one that is lower in cost and closer to the casino. Also, I don't like to gamble at the GN. For those reasons I like to stay at the 4 Queens in the South Tower.

As mentioned, what is important to you? I guess the GN has the nicest rooms, but some of the worst odds on VP downtown. My place of choice is Main Street Station. Good gambling, good food and great employees. 20x odds on craps.

The player's card works for MSS, CAL & Fremont.

I'll second Joe's opinion. We were Strip stayers until we took a flyer on MSS. Fell in love with the place. Friendliest place we've ever stayed.

The only place we've stayed at downtown is MSS, we're very fond of it. Easy to get to (we have rental car), usually very quick check-in, clean/comfortable rooms, easy to get from room to casino, the Cal, FSE.

Formally stayed on the Strip at Harrah's, Bally's, and Excal.

To stay I'd have to say the Rush Tower at the Golden Nugget. This being said they get virtually nil of my action during my week long visits. Too many other downtown casinos offer better odds and minimums. The thing that makes downtown so great is that everything is so concentrated, and walks thereby so short, it really doesn't matter where one stays, merely only where one has fun!!!

Room quality is secondary to me as long as everything is clean. I like Main Street Station for the gambling, food, beer and friendly employees.

Since your timer says you're staying at the Cosmo in about 5 months, I'm not sure anywhere downtown can compare - expcept maybe the Rush Tower at GN. On the other hand you can probably stay for 4 -5 nights for what you'll pay for one night at Cosmo. Over the years I've stayed at almost all the downtown places, and the only one I promised my wife I'd never stay at again was the old tower in the Las Vegas Club. (You don't have to worry about that any longer!). GN has the nicest rooms in the new tower, but the old Carson rooms are at least 1/2 mile from the casino, and the casino sucks for playable games and machines. We stayed at Binions once (another place you don't need to worry about) and the sound and vibration from the band below knocked the alarm clock off the night stand! We didn't sleep much there until they quit playing. As a couple of others have said above, I really like MSS, both from a friendliness standpoint, and because they've got great beer, food and VP. They also have great close and free (for guests) self-parking, which by itself is a winner for me. On the downside, rooms facing the freeway have traffic noise 24-7 - you need to keep your a/c fan running all the time to try and drown it out. The other side has train noise, which we've gotten used to over the years. Fitz was good and cheap and threadbare, but apparently the rooms have been refurbished since it became the D. We don't go there much since the music is too %^&$ loud and the long bar VP paytables are about the worst downtown. Downtown Grand rooms are pretty nice, and I can't explain the casino - not sure this place will be around for very long. (Too bad, as the old Lady Luck was my first LV hotel.) Plaza rooms aren't bad, but the vibe in the casino is somehow off. Maybe we just went at the wrong times. California rooms are much like MSS, only quieter and in need of updating. Very serviceable, just not fancy. Four queens rooms also ok, but small - fremont rooms also small. New rooms at GG are great but more expensive, old rooms are tiny. If all you want is a bed and shower, they are all just fine. If you are looking for a place to impress your girlfriend/wife, none will probably do that.

I like the Cabana Suites at El Cortez. Quiet little rooms away from the noise. Still walking distance to everything.

One thing to watch out for is the noise from the canopy. I have stayed at 4Q a couple of times and it has been loud. My last two stays downtown have been at Plaza. Both towers there have been quiet.

My thought as far as GN is that if you are going to stay there, you might as well stay on the strip. Staying downtown is kind of a different state of mind for me. Fine for a guy's trip or solo, but my wife doesn't really care for it.

I consider staying downtown has no advantage, only playing downtown has advantage.
I always stay on the Strip and take the Deuce to downtown to play.

We have started splitting our trips. Usually 2 nights on the strip and 2 nights downtown. We have been staying at GN. I like the rush tower rooms even though I don't like the tub/shower combo. I have a hard time getting in and out of it. I enjoy playing craps at th GN and at MSS

Odd choice I guess but my favorite place to stay downtown is the Fremont. Casino is small but not a bad place to play. Trip from your room to casino or back is super quick. Rooms are small (good for one...two if they really like each other) but clean. Buffet is OK. I like the snack bar and the Dunkin Donuts downstairs for quick cheap meals. I guess what I like most is the location with Binions, Golden Nugget, Four Queens and the D all basically across the street. Oddly enough, my favorite place to play is chilling at the bar at the Golden Gate. Bartenders are friendly and keep the drinks coming. Place is always lively in the evening and I can't say the dancing blackjack girls don't add something to the experience. Have stayed at the Plaza and MSS as well. Both have nicer, bigger rooms but are more of a hike to other places. Other than it being cheaper, the biggest advantage to downtown is being able to go from casino to casino quickly, so I'd stay at either the Fremont, Four Queens, Golden Nugget or the D.
