Today at work, a client comes in wearing a Vegas t-shirt. :nworthy: Naturally as is normally the case, a conversation about Las Vegas breaks out. My colleague says Vegas is a place everyone should once. In my head I'm thinking...ONCE? The client says he's been twice. Immediately I feel redeemed as a Vegas degenerate. Whew! He thinks like me I say silently under my breath. Then the clients says "twice is more than enough". Well! Twice? :Þ

At work as I begin this thread I've learned, and come to appreciate and accept, that what we, as VMBers have is very special. Yes, there are many places to travel to and enjoy, and I do. But there's no place like Las Vegas .
We attach pet names like Mecca, Lost Wages Sin City and others. We celebrate one another's wins and commiserate together when we lose! We attempt to connect with one another while there through posts, PMs and seek to notice green wrist bands. Are we complete strangers? I don't think so. Whether our Vegas love is golf or gambling, shows or shopping, concerts or Cirque du Soleil, we all share a common bond. It's a Vegas thing and some just don't understand.

I'm okay when friends and family say Vegas? Again? In some I sense a tinge of jealousy. In others curiosity even amazement, but never identification. I only get that here, on this board.

    Hear, hear!

I am a traveler, through and through. Vegas just happens to be the place where I travel the most. Why? Because I know it like the back of my hand, it's still a value and dangit - it's Vegas! Here at VMB, we are among friends because we share the love of Vegas, wins-losses-highs-lows.

As far as folks around me who "get it'? My family gets it, they know I head west 3 times a year, they don't even blink an eye. Others, I do get that envy thing - I don't know if it is envy of frequent travel or envy of frequent Vegas travel. Whichever it is, not my problem. We all make life choices - I choose to travel with my entertainment funds and am grateful and thankful for a job that allows me the flexibility to do so.

Vegas, collecting Beanie Babies, old cars, you name it, a person who doesn't share a particular obsession can't ever "get" it, even as his/her personal obsession might be lost on us. Hell, I know people who think we go to Hawaii too often, and we think it not enough.

And then there is golf ...

Go to Vegas, have fun, soak it in and laugh at your bud who collects Thomas Kinkade works or whatever.

We like Vegas because of one thing: variety. you can gamble or not. Eat fancy or McDonald's. See a show or hang out by a very nice pool all day. Dress up or dress down. Play golf or go to the movies or go shopping. Helicopter rides or ATV rides in the desert. And you can do any of things any day of the week. Clubbing or bar hopping. And it's inexpensive.

But really, I give very little thought to what others like or don't like and fully accept that it would be a boring world if we all thought the same way.

Agreed. My wife and I travel to many places throughout the US and Overseas. Vegas is a regular in the rotation, partially because conferences bring me/us out at least once a year, but also because we enjoy it. We don't necessarily consider Vegas a "vacation" as most trips are for about 3-4 nights and many times you come home more tired that when you left. It's more like a quick getaway.

One thing I love about Vegas that's pretty unique vs. other destinations, is that because it was built solely for the purpose of being a tourist destination, and because it's constantly changing and reinventing itself, it's the one place we've found that you know exactly what to expect, and have the comfort of knowing you can do the things you always enjoy, while at the same time being able to experience many new and different things that you have never done all in one short trip. Most places you go to you have one or the other but not both. If you're going somewhere you've never been, you get the mystery or excitement of a place that you've never experienced and don't know what to expect. Or you get to go somewhere you've been and you know you're going to enjoy, but you probably aren't going to do or see a whole lot that you haven't done before. Vegas is a great blend of both, and offers so many varying and interchangeable parts that you can make many different types of trips without repeating the same one twice.

Going off memory here, but there were 41 million visitors last year and 2/3 of the US population has never visited?

Some folks get it and others don't. There are some folks who rent a house at the Jersey Shore each year @ $3-5,000 a week and that's vacation.

To the OP, maybe the client who said "twice" didn't want to reveal his hand for fear of a hairy eyeball from the nattering nabobs of negativity.

Don't try to make them understand. They'll just come out and somehow ruin it for the rest of us!

We also get the funny looks and snide comments but we love the shows, the hotels, the food and the slots and never get bored! As that very rare thing - a Scotsman who doesn't drink ( or smoke or have kids) I know many people who spend an absolute fortune on alcohol, cigarettes and on presents for their children every single week of their lives but then they stare at you incredulously as if YOU are the ones wasting your money!!!!
From the UK, your main expenditure is the flights, but the hotels are so relatively inexpensive that it is genuinely great value and we always come over for 2 weeks and enjoy the chance to relax and plan, the only time we came for 1 week we ended up stressed out and wishing we had booked for longer!
I overheard an American couple in a cafe in Vegas once loudly proclaiming " of course a weekend is more than long enough here" but for me that just shows a lack of imagination! With the number of eateries for example in the MGM Grand, you can eat somewhere different every night.
Still, the more people who say they'd never go, the more chance for the rest of us!

After my first Vegas trip I couldn't stop talking about Vegas. Every time my next trip was near I would talk more and more. it got to where coworkers were calling me Vegas. A few workers went to Vegas, when they came back they understood what I was always talking about. Some of them enjoyed it, one guy loved it so we would always talk Vegas.

This is definitely what makes it for us. It's familiar and "home" for us when we get there, and yet every year there is something different, something new they have built or developed. There's too much there to see in one trip anyway, so there's always a reason to go back. And yet you can also sit at the exact same table and chat over drinks, just like you did all the years before.

I told a co-worker who was going for the first time, a few years back: "If you feel yourself starting to already miss it when the wheels go up, then it's already hooked you." He did, and it did. He's a "Vegas Person" now.

I love Vegas People. We get it, and we're our own big club. It's a fun club to be a part of.

    THIS.

I always say, there is something in Vegas for everyone. You can have a gambling trip, a shopping trip, a show trip, a sight-seeing trip, or a giant combination of everything, which is my preference. If you go to Vegas and don't have fun, you either gambled more than you should have or you're not a fun person.

In my profession, which tends to be stuffy, conservative, and risk-averse, you would be hard pressed to find many of my colleagues who would admit to going to Vegas (and enjoying it) too readily due to the immediate stigma people associate with the name.

I am pretty sure in my office I'm the only one who makes regular trips (3-4 a year) out there, and begins planning for the next before even leaving LAS. So I can definitely see where someone would not verbally communicate what they're thinking deep down.

I know many of our family and friends assume we're degenerates because we go all the time. It used to bother me - I don't bat an eye anymore. However I do sympathize with them, before my wife and I got hooked on Vegas, we often wondered why our cousins constantly went. It wasn't us being critical so much as inquisitive. It didn't take us long to figure it out on our first trip there together.

Everyone does something that others think is crazy or wasteful or silly, even people who don't do anything, which when you think about it is perhaps the most crazy, wasteful and silly way to live.

We just finished our second trip in two years.

My wife says that's it we aren't going back next year she wants to do something different.

Saturday afternoon she laments how she misses the beds at the ARIA because she feels like she is sleeping on plywood now.

Saturday night she just blurts out she misses the strip and just walking around not caring about anything and going in and out of the shops and casinos.

An hour later she has me looking at different rooms at different casinos as the Aria is going to be doing construction for the next two years.

She then states that a three night stay would be nice.

Ha ha see you in 2016 Vegas.

That's hilarious. My wife did the exact same thing last year. Sitting in McCarran waiting for our flight to go home she looks at me and says "I'm glad we came, but I don't need to come back for a while." Like you, this was our second trip of the year.

I just agreed, but inside was dying, because I was already thinking about when to come back.

Flash-forward a few days and she's starting to talk about vegas again and playing her slot machine apps on her tablet - a glimmer of hope emerges. A few weeks later she's asking if we've received any offers from our host. And not more than two months since saying she doesn't need to go back for a while we have another trip booked.

I honestly don't know what I'd do if my wife weren't as addicted as I am - get a divorce? LOL

Quite a few years ago our kids were done college and out of the house so we decided to do our first non family vacation for our anniversary. We decided to go to Vegas. We went for 4 nights and I think we had about $800 dollars to spend between us. Well we had a blast and have been hooked ever since. Now our kids meet us there from time to time and they love it too.

The saying should be "never discuss politics or religion or Vegas." Unless someone has the same ideology as you, you're doomed.
