New to VP but want to spend some time playing downtown next trip. Just want to get some places to check out. What are your favorite places to play and why? Thanks...

My favorite is 4 Queens bars. Great paytables and attentive bartenders.

Boars Head Bar at Main Street Station. Good pay tables, good service, good beer (that's brewed on site) and scratch off cards to win additional $$ when you get 4 of a kind.

I do like Boars Head bar but also vote for Chicago Brewing in Four Queens. They have the Hefeweizen there that I can't get at Boars Head. Would have liked it even more if I had hit the Progressive Royal early on during my next to last Vegas trip. Dealt four to the royal but no such luck! Third vote is Long Bar at the D. Fast drink service and many games on tv.

I'm a big Boar's Head Bar fan at MSS, I also like the Cal. I am going to try to play more at the Plaza in March to see how that goes.

The vue bar (upstairs at the d) Some of the games have full pay tables. The music is semi quite and its usually older music which is fun. Also they have a bathroom very close near the escalators. And if you go outside to smoke they have a balcony to look over fremont.

Boars bar at MSS is my favorite. I'm not much of a DT person but I always go down there and visit MSS.

I'll add yet another vote for Main Street Station. It's actually usually the only place I usually play downtown--the crazy Fremont Street scene is getting to be too much for me.

I'm not a bartop player--for some reason, it's hard for me to get comfortable. But right by the Boar's Head bar, near the valet entrance, is a bank of 12 full-pay VP machines. They're "slant" machines, which are more comfortable than upright. I will camp out there and play 9/6 JoB until my wife gets bored. Drink service has always been good (you can get the same beer there that you get at the bar). And the aforementioned scratch-off cards when you get a four-of-a-kind are fun, too. (Push the "change" button to get one--I didn't know what I had to do the first time, and finally had to ask a cocktail waitress.) I think you need to be playing with a B Connected card to get one--at least, the staff person always ask for me to take it out of the machine when they get there.

If you like the Fremont Street scene, Four Queens has a lot of good full-pay machines, as well.

As a Detroiter, I love The Longbar at The D simply because they always have Detroit sports games on. VP is simply time filler for me, so I don't fret too much about getting on a 9/6 machine.

Another vote for Boars Head for me. Though I do not like that damn bar in the way.

I also like the sports book bar at Fremont. 9/5 jacks and 2 or 3 tvs. It is small so service is good. Close to run bets up to the book.

Another vote for 4 Queens, especially the Mike's Bar. They make it feel like home, plus I love chasing the progressives there and the beer is good.

I also enjoy Boar's Head at MSS, The payables are slightly worse for what I play but the beer is slightly better.

Just to add. You do need to be playing with a player's card and you also must be playing max coins to get a scratch card. The reason they ask you to remove it is so they can mark down your card number. You can also leave your card in the machine and hand them a different scratch card and they copy your number from that. Assuming you have been lucky and have another card. :evillaugh

Superstition: I don't like removing my card, so I have a second player's card on the bar.

    My favorites are:

    1. Boar's Head Bar at MSS.
    2. Vue bar at The D.
    3. Long Bar and The D
    4. Sports Book Bar at Plaza - Probably cause I hit 4 aces with the kicker last time I was there.

Your best bet might be to ask the bartender what he/she can do for you, but I get crown no problem just poking around on the machines, though I believe that decent tipping is expected for premium drinks ;)

I know this might be a stupid question, but can you sit at say the Long Bar at the D if your not going to play VP? I love to play, but rarely play unless the pay tables are really good.

No, you may not sit at a video poker bar if you are not playing, it is a RULE! Just kidding, though you might piss me off! Ten years ago I knew two places where a casino employee would ask you to vacate your seat for a player, but that was what we used to call 'customer service'. I don't know if that still happens, but I wouldn't ask you personally. If you're paying for drinks then it's a bar, the casino probably would prefer you sit there than me.

Second the Vue Bar upstairs at the D. I play Deuces there, and have hit quads my last two trips, once when drawing five! (Never done that before or since). Also like the 4Q and Chicago Brew Co. within, although I have not had much luck there the past few trips.

Love Boars Head, and I got on a huge roll at the downstairs bar at the Cal a couple trips ago. Cashed out about $700 after two hours.

Bottom line for me is that all of these spots provide enjoyable atmosphere and great drink service.

I prefer playing on the floor at The Cal. My favorite game is 8/5 Bonus Poker, which they have plenty of. Good friendly drink service and I also hit a quarter Royal for $1,000 in Sept.
