Warning: rant ahead (but might prove helpful to some for future bookings).

I booked one non-refundable night in a non-smoking suite at the Downtown Grand. It turns out that "non"-smoking really means smoking "optional" according to the front desk clerk, and the guest before me must have "opted" to smoke. Yuck.

In other words they mark it nonsmoking but don't enforce it, right?

Did you push the issue with management? Most hotels I know will try to keep the guest happy.

That can't be right it doesn't even make sense. By that definition every hotel room is Non-Smoking.

So in their smoking rooms you can get fined for not smoking?

During my one stay there I requested a smoking room and when I got into the room it had ash trays. I had to call the front desk to confirm I was in a smoking room and request an ash tray

Many hotels now have non smoking floors. At the Cal they have floors that specifically are no smoking. The el cortez tower is supposed to be non smoking but I have smelled smoke in the elevators and also in my room. I had to either move to another room or had them febreeze the room(when they didn't have other rooms available) to get rid of the smoke smell. I also smelled cig smoke from some people staying in the tower but were trying to blow their smoke out the windows.

Too bad, it is unfortunate that the DTG doesn't create totally non smoking floors or non smoking rooms. I hate the smell of smoke, even after the room has been cleaned and febreezed many of us non smokers can detect the odor of smoke if someone smoked in the room previously.

I've been put in "smoking optional" rooms before... I was always under the impression that these rooms are given to guests who specify "no preference" regarding smoking - which is how I always book my rooms... properties I recall doing this include Rio, Golden Gate, & Gold Coast (I think)... Plaza may have them as well... not certain.
The only difference that I have noticed with a "smoking optional" room is that the cigarette odor is far more subdued than in a regular smoking room...that, and they have no ashtrays in them, so I've had to bring one up from the tables... (I only smoke when I'm in Vegas... but when I'm put in a non-smoking room, it's perfectly fine with me.)

My advice would be to be very specific when booking your room - that you only want a room that has been kept smoke-free.

    Just to wrap things up:

As far as I know, the suites are on the top floors of the two towers. I walked over to the other tower and verified that it was explicitly labeled as a non-smoking floor.

The only thing the hotel was willing to do was switch me to a smaller room, but they couldn't say specifically how long it would take. It was already 3 in the morning, and I needed to be up at 6.

I actually saw an ash tray shortly after checking in to my supposedly non-smoking room. I figured that was just accidentally left there. I even smelled smoke, but assumed it was my clothes from hanging out in the casino. :rolleyes2:

Yeah, I could have prevented this one if I'd just taken the time to switch rooms earlier. I was so eager to get on with my evening that I convinced myself it wouldn't be a problem.

Thanks everyone for tolerating my late-night rant. Not every forum is this tolerant!

I call bullshit on that one. I would have made a fuss saying I have allergies and being placed in a smoking room is putting my health at risk.
If they did not have a room available, I would have insisted on them moving you to another property at their cost.

You probably screwed yourself by not bringing it to management immediately. Non Smoking means Non Smoking, and I am sure there is some case of deceptive advertising here if they did not
disclose their non smoking room policy at the time of check in.

As anyone who has stayed in the old Barbary Coast on the Strip can tell you, sometimes it's just impossible to keep the smoking smell out of rooms, non-smoking or not. From what I could tell, the elevators and ventilation system there very efficiently transported the cigarette stank from the casino into every nook and cranny in the hotel. The whole place smelled like the break room in a cheap whorehouse. I wonder if they dealt with that issue in the Cromwell rehab.

I've never done it in Vegas, but when encountering cigarette stank in a non-smoking hotel room, every time I have been accommodated with a new, stank-free room. In Vegas, I don't know, I just deal with it as part of the experience. It reminds me of 1988, I guess. If it were overwhelming I would try to get another room, I guess, but for me, if some cigarette stank is a deal-breaker, that rules out Vegas..

I agree 100% with you Funkhouser. No smoking means no smoking. I have been staying in hotels all over the country, and I always request a non-smoking room. Never has my room smelled of smoke, or has there been an ashtray in the room. Something is not right here.

Yeah, that doesn't pass the smell test.

I think it was Westward Ho that had a note in all nonsmoking rooms saying there would be something like a "$75 extra cleaning fee" if there was evidence of smoking in the room. (Or was that Stardust?)

I have stayed at the DG a few times now, never had a problem with the non-smoking room. and any issues that I may have had were taken care of with no problem. it sounds like it was a busy time or bad day for that clerk. i stay at a lot of different downtown joints, and the Orleans or Gold Coast. in the last 2 years or so, i find the skunk smell of marijuana in the hallways of these hotels quite often.
