Is it unusual or common to chat with strangers while playing slots?

My friend in the south says she chats it up with strangers at her local casino and they're all so friendly.

I haven't encountered this in my trips to Vegas, and never in my local casino in Cleveland. Everyone just minds their business and looks at their machine, which is the way I like it because how much money someone has in a machine or how much they're betting per spin is personal and I'd rather be left alone.

What has been your experience? How do you feel about it?

Overall i would say unusual but it can happen. I can chat a bit. If they hit something good, I'll say something like "nice hit", if they respond positively, then maybe we chat more. If they ignore me, I don't bother pushing it obviously.

For me, gambling on slots is a personal thing and although its normal enough to make the odd comment or two, it can be very annoying when you get drunks shouting and hollering constantly, usually when they've won $5 max.!

    What tring said, exactly.
In AC I'll see several regulars each time I go and we may chat for a sec, but it's rare to strike up a conversation with anyone sitting next to me.
In Vegas, I don't think I've exchanged 2 words with anyone at a machine.

i never initiate conversation unless like posted above, ill say "nice hit" i dont play slots often but usually someone always starts talking to me, it dont bother me at all...i do notice many times though, no matter how oftern or how big/small the hit is, people always turn and look to see what you won...as for personal not wanting people to know how much you have or what your betting, thats hard when its plastered on the screen in front of you, anyone can see that

I love Vegas, I love slots, and I come to play - It's my getaway, all about me place a few times a year..

If playing pennies and someone chats me up, I'll chit chat a bit - 'nice hit, get a bonus' etc, with folks who give off a good vibe.
But folks who sit down and immediately start bitchin or grumbling about the CW, the drinks, how tight the slots are and just OOZE bad vibes - I'm outta there. I'm all about keeping it positive.

When playing $1, $5, $10 - I like to get into my 'zone' and it's just me in my own little world - no interaction - if conversation is too distracting, I politely move elsewhere for awhile...or take a stretch break.

We were playing VP at the Cosmo last summer when two Scots (guys from Scotland) struck up a conversation and said they were having luck with DDB. They would chat with us a couple minutes and then retreat thinking they were infringing on us. Then they'd be back to chat again. My wife hit about 8 4OAK that trip all on DDB. Ever since then we refer to DDB as the game our Scottish friends recommended to us.

Hmm, I think I am going against the grain in this thread, but I chat and get chatted with constantly while playing slots. Most of the time it is small talk, but other times I have met people and gone out to eat with them later or go drinking with them.

I rarely chat up others when playing slots. Playing vp at a bar is a whole different story. I've made good friends at Sullys. Lol

I actually don't like being talked to when playing the machines. I play mainly blackjack....that is my social game. To me, table games are the best when with a fun group of players. When I take a break from the tables and go to the machines.....that is my zone out/quiet time. Even my friends that I gamble with know to give me my space when at the machines.

People in the South are friendly, thus I talk a lot more in Tunica than I do in Vegas. However, if somebody starts the conversation, I'll bullshit with them forever.

I am pretty much an introvert but people try and start conversations with me all the time. Outside of occasionally cheering on a nice hit, I would rather keep to myself. At locals casinos, it's not unusual for folks to have some acquaintances they look for on their regular visits among the other guests as well as the floor staff.

I love chatting with people no matter what I'm playing, whether it be tables or slots

I'm from Toronto and have lived in various places around the Greater Toronto Area.

My favourite chat slots story is from last summer. I was playing Lord of the Rings at $3.50 a spin max bet. I was sitting between a Mother and Daughter (I'm going to guess ages like 75 and 45). Every time I hit the bonus round (Which on that game come quite often) both of them would stop and watch me, because they were both playing like 40 cents a spin and not winning anything and it was more fun to watch me go through $100 after $100. I was down probably $400 when I won $600 so that was good. We were chatting the whole time and after awhile I asked where they were from. Turns out it was Ajax, which is actually where I went to elementary school for my first three years before moving. Small word

With that said, if I chat with someone and I can immediately tell they want to be left alone, I don't push. I know everyone is different, especially when it comes to gambling.

Wow ?.....I'm surprised by this thread.
I guess, I'll shut my mouth around slots !

    I don't play slots - my wife does + I watch --
    I play VP + don't mind BS-ing with people.
Slots is so "mindless" to me - I need diversion ( just me, folks).

I thought "slot people" always talked ?

I am shy- I would never try to pick someone up in bar- but in context I'm fine. I can talk to sports fans, kayakers, fishermen, people waiting in line, and gamblers because we all have context. It takes only a moment to learn whether or not the other gambler is interested in talking. As for slots vs. video poker vs. blackjack vs. whatever other game, the only pervasively sociable casino game I can think of is craps because of the way it is played.

I can chat or not. If someone plops down next to me, I will greet them. You can usually tell immediately, if they are strictly business or a chatter.

Vice versa, if I plop down next to them and they do not greet me, I know they are in their zone, and will just play. I prefer basic talk about how the machines by us are hitting, but not much else. I play more table games than slots, and with so many different video games, I will sometimes ask ? about the machine at times. Men rarely seem to talk, and the older blue hairs veteran players usually talk more.
