I am thinking about booking a 3 day trip to the Cosmopolitan, bringing $5,000 and just playing VP, but instead of playing the low level VP like I should, I was thinking about playing a big boy machine ($250/hand with max bet) and seeing what hits, If I do that I will only have enough for 20 hands if nothing hits, but I want to have the "go big or go home" sentiment, if I do this do you think I will receive any comps or future offers? Also if I do this what are the odds I would last more than I few minutes before going broke?

    No comps, no offers.

Unless you hit big early and keep playing.

Nobody cares if you lose 5k.

I'd play the 25c 100-play ($125 a whack), should be able to generate a significant amount of theo, which should gain you some good comps.
Although, if you play $5 single line ($25 a whack), you'll still be among the highest of video poker players at cosmo...and with $5000, I'd allot myself $1500 per day to play on.

It's like $100 on $1 machine, chance of going broke is very high even if you play 9/6 BoJ.
I have many times losing $500 playing $1 JoB.

I feel like 5k is a fair amount, how much coin-in do I have to put before I'll be noticed and get a free night in a basic room or something?

if you are just going to play for comps/offers, you should just stay home.

If this is the way you want to play, it is your money. You will have incredibly high chance of busting, but if you win it will be bigger.

But also remember you are there 3 days, and you could be broke in 20 minutes. Are you going to have a fun trip if you have to spend 2 days not playing? Are you disciplined enough not to take out a marker or withdraw more?

Be very sure this is what you want and ignore comps in the decision.

Its really impossible to say how you'll be comped because no one knows how long your 5k will last. But if worst comes to worst and you are whiped out fast, I would not expect a lot.

Your stakes are too high, twenty hands of video poker at any level is likely to end in disaster. Two years ago, on a dare, I played one thousand dollars through a five dollar, twenty-five dollars per hand, JoB machine at Golden Nugget. Lasted about forty-five minutes. No other play at all because I seriously dislike their casino, I don't think I was even offered a free drink. I then received offers for three room nights and two hundred freeplay for the next calendar year. Took them up on it three times without any additional play, except the freeplay, of course. Did same thing at Cosmo and I am still receiving room offers, been there twice.

So much of this is done by computers these days, if you want to show them a huge play just make sure you don't drop a buck in a slot machine the next day, could cut your daily average in half.

I wouldn't aim for comps out of a VP machine, many places don't give the same amount of points for VP coin in vs slot coin in.

Cosmo gives 1 point for $6 of VP in and 1 point for $2.50 in slot play

without having a host or lots of history at Cosmo?...low chances
they see lots of $1-2K/hand table players....so just getting noticed is kinda tough there

The casino doesn't base offers off win/loss, or even average bet size alone, they will base it off your ADT.

Although the bet size is great, your potential and very likely short length of play making up another part of the ADT calculation could be horrible.

As for risk of ruin on your bankroll, here's a link:
    http://wizardofodds.com/games/video-poker/appendix/1/

Although I'm strictly a slots player, I often go to Vegas with 5K bankroll and generally get everything comped off, including several past trips staying at Cosmo.

I think the key for you to get future comps (or back end ones on any trip) will be trying to maintain at least a minimum 4 hours of play per day- that seems to be the widely accepted play level to start getting into the comps.
I'd suggest taking the BR money, divide it evenly for the number of days you are there, and start with an average bet level to maintain the play at least 4 hours. If you are winning, increase the bet size. Once you are losing more than half the daily BR, drop the bet some to try and recoup to a higher bet level again.

Obviously 5K would more than pay for hotel, food, shows and transport for a 3 day trip, so throwing 5K in what could be a 10 minute experience solely for the purpose of getting comps doesn't make sense.
As long as you are there playing anyway for entertainment, if you go in understanding ADT, then you can better understand how to maximize your comps!

Again, this is my experience playing on slots which have the worst odds in the house (so generates a high ADT in comparison to other games), but it likely applies to VP at some level as well.

    Hope this helps!

It is coin in per day. Some places do it based on trip.

They look at what you spend a day and base offers off that. 10k coin in looks good for one day, but 10k over 3 days not as much.

You will be there 3 days. They will divide your total coin in by your 3 days to get your average. You bust out after 15 min then you no play rest of trip, that won't look good. You prob won't get anything. Maybe one free night midweek with one paid.

You will likely get future teaser offers based on 5k of coin in with a high average bet at Cosmo. Expect 2 nights comped (Sun-Thu) with a discounted room rate for Fri and Sat. They may or may not throw in freeplay. Cosmo sends out teasers for less play than you are offering.

If you want to play big, $10 DDB VP has potentially big jackpots, and will still destroy a 5k bankroll quickly. Personally, with 5k, I would stick to a mixture of $2 and $5 Boner Deluxe and DDB.

Here is a sure way to get your room comped. I guarantee it will work.

Take your $5,000 and divide into two envelopes. Put $4,400 in one and play whatever you want from $.25 to $250 per hand. The lower the amount, the longer you will get to play.
Take the other envelope with $600 and hand it to the front desk clerk. Instant room.
