Road trip chatter here has me thinking about epic drives. Not necessarily long drives, though that's OK, but classic drives, like Going to the Sun in Glacier or up to Jasper, the high road to Taos. Five I love, in no particular order.

    1. Coromandel Peninsula, North Island, NZ ... and being on the "wrong" side is just that much more fun
    2. A1A, Florida Keys
    3. Hwy 1, Big Sur and then the north coast
    4. Utah Route 12
    5. Old McKenzie Highway, McKenzie Bridge to Sisters, OR

The view of Manayunk from the Schuykill Expressway has always been a favorite of mine.

I've done #2&3 and agree. The drive from Flagstaff to Sedona, AZ is up there, as is the White Mountains of New Hampshire in the fall.

And most of the time we all get a good long look at Manayunk due to the Schuykill alway backed up :) But you are correct it is a nice ride on a Sunday morning with no traffic .

Snide, it's not that kinda driver either but Bridgestone is sending me a 6i to kick the tires on for a few weeks, the J15 DPF model. Santa is bringing me new sticks this year and I haven't had a chance to abuse the Bridgestones yet.

I have done 2,3 and part of #4 (route 12) as well and could not agree more. Ken2v i saw that you were making some recommendations on route 395 in another tread so we are doing that this summer so i hope that one is up there as well. We are going from SF to Vegas and are staying in the Yosemite NP for a couple of days before hitting the Tioga Pass-Mammouth Lakes-route 395-Death Valley-Vegas.

Excellent route over the Sierra to Vegas!! Easily goes on that list of mine, which probably should've been 25 instead of just five! You'll have a blast. Spend a bit of time at Mammoth if you can. Do you mountain bike? AWESOME mtb park there.

Sounds good, yeah we are spending 1 night in Mammoth but i have not got around to what we are going to do there. Mountain bike sounds awesome, can you do rentals while there? It will be some more people travelling with us so i will make sure to bring this up when we meet to finalize our plans.

Rentals, helmets, armor if desired. Massive hill, every terrain imaginable, every skill level accommodated, l-o-n-g rides and gnarly crap I'd not even have done back in the days when I was a maniacal mountain guy, lift and shuttle serviced. Pretty cool heading down from the 11,000-foot peak at the gondola.

The most scenic drive was here in Ontario in the fall.

From Toronto to Thunder Bay. Once you pass the last main city of Sudbury...you're on your own for 4+ hours until the next town/city.

Do that for 12+ hours. It was awesome!!!

It's the beauty of untouched land and Lake Superior.

If you are lucky....you won't hit any moose or wildcats...

I-90 between Mt. Rushmore and Yellowstone. An amazing set of switchbacks as you enter Bighorn Nat Forest.

Hwy 49 CA Gold Rush Highway

Did some tooling around north of Little Rock. Very popular motorcycle roads, beautiful scenery.

    Circling Maui

I expect we will have a stay in Estes Park, CO next year and will do the Peak to Peak drive then.

I haven't done that, but the husband has :)
Being in Calgary , we've done a few lovely day trips to the mountains , in the backcountry , one of my favorite drives is along
the Banff-Jasper Parkway is beautiful in the autumn, with all the colors! and Rocky Mountains , all on main highways but many backroads you can check out , too

Call me crazy, but I really enjoyed the drive out to Borrego Springs the two times I played Rams Hill since it reopened last year. In the span of about 90 minutes, you drive through a beautiful canopy of oaks out the 76, then at Lake Henshaw you turn left on the 79 and the terrain turns to rolling farmland punctuated with big boulder outcroppings and cows grazing all over the place, then about half an hour later you're winding your way over and through the craggy mountains of Anza-Borrego, before finally descending down to the desert floor at Rams Hill.

....then exit at Green Lane and head over to Dallsandros for a steak sandwich...

Starting in Williamsport, PA, head north on Rt. 99 (formerly Rt. 15) to Mansfield, hang a left to Wellsboro and the Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania. The leaves are probably turning color right now and will be a bonus.
