We checked in to our 12th floor room. It smelled funny. Kind of like stale cigarettes combined with the back room of a funeral parlor. HMMMM? well, we requested another room. Another floor same smell. Sorry I love the El Co but my wife had a problem.

Anyway was it because the room was fumigated? I don't know and the desk would not confirm or deny.

    Just a funny smell? GROSS!

My wife will no longer stay there. Period.

    Heads Up !

all rantings are in my opinion only. No basis in fact exists. Draw your own conclusions.

Hello Ben.You do know that hotel was built in 1941 74 years ago right? :confused2: I think a building 74 years old would begin developing that so-called "Funeral Parlor" smell lol.You may want to try a hotel that was built maybe in this decade to be safe.Good luck to you and "Via Lost Wages!"

Funny, I thought the entire treasure island hotel and casino smelled terrible, and my sense of smell is poor. Because of that alone I could never stay there. Such a foul odor, like a dirty restroom throughout the entire place. One-thing I do remember was walking the strip into the Cromwell, and instantly surprised by a very pleasant and welcoming aroma throughout the entire place.

I'm there in just under 2 weeks so will see what it's like, seemed ok when I last stopped there but that was 3 years ago.

Hopefully that smell is from a broken or leaky pipe that needs to be fixed. The building is old. I was there this past March and didn't notice anything.

Try a Cabana Junior Suite next time - much more modern than the Tower rooms, in a completely non-smoking building. your wife might be pleasantly surprised....

The ElCo is the smokiest casino that I have encountered and I don't know how often they change the carpet but it may go deeper than that. The smoke penetrates the walls as well and after years of this it is very difficult to get rid of that smell. BTW, I am a smoker and only stepped in recently while visiting downtown. I was not staying there. Cannot speak for the rooms but the smell travels.lol

While the El Cortez was built in 1941, the tower was build in 1980 so is only 35 years old.

Unfortunately even though the tower is supposed to be totally non smoking I have encountered cigarette
smoke when I checked into my tower room a few years ago. They moved me but the stale smoke smell was still lingering in the next room. They eventually had housekeeping come up to febreeze everything to get rid of the stale smell which helped a little (but not much). When you check in they showed me a paper which warned about smoking in the tower rooms (something about getting charged if caught smoking in rooms or something like that) but I guess they never really enforce their non smoking rule. I even smelled cig smoke in the bathrooms, seems that some people smoke in that area and blow the smoke out the small bathroom window.

Another problem is that the building allowed smoking for decades so very hard to just get rid of the old smoke unless they did a complete refurbish of the rooms, ceilings, furnishings and anything that can hold the smoke smell.

Yeah, I know it's hard to have to bring along an air freshener just to get rid of the smoke smell and stale smell but unfortunately you are talking about the El Cortez and not a strip hotel.

I thought the smell was mix of Ben-Gay and jungle gardenia. I walked in and thought to myself "Grandma?"

I've experience this smell in numerous hotels before new and old. I've been told before that chemical smell (kind of like Formaldehyde) is from the heavy duty carpet cleaning chemicals they use. I have smelled it before on the casino floors. I assume they have to clean those things as well as the hallways quite often? Don't know how accurate it is but thought I'd pass it on. I'm going to the El Cortez this weekend, but we are staying at the Cabana Suites so hopefully there won't be a problem

I'd take the smell of the El Cortez over the one at MGM any day.

Probably the mummified remains of hookers hidden in the walls. It's a normal smell in older hotels, especially in Vegas.

Don't remind me. Wasn't there a story about a dead body under the bed someplace a few years ago?

Is this the "regular" El Co smell we're talking about, or something recent?
That every-day El Co scent is - in it's own twisted way - something I've grown to appreciate...sort of reminds me of stripper-powder/dust mixed with cigarette fumes...with a hint of cotton-candy after-scent.
