I can't seem to find a map of downtown that shows where it is?
It looked nice in pictures, but is there a safe walkway to the D and freemont street for women?
How long of walk would it be? Thanks for info!

Walk out the front door of The D. Face the stage immediately to your left. Now turn 180 degrees (turn around), and walk 1 block North to Ogden. (Ogden is the next street North of Fremont Street). Cross Ogden, and DGT is on the right corner. It is really close and an easy walk. It is not intimating at all. For some reason the walk to DTG is impossible, yet most people can find The Cal and MSS (which are on on the same street) without a problem.

After giving this some thought, it does seem weird that The Cal and MSS thrive while DTG suffers. Yet those properties are not on
Fremont Street. For me, DTG feels cold and and uninviting. There is nothing there that makes me want to hang out. The machines and casino floor are shiny and new, but it lacks character. I like a casino that feels "lived in". Everything at DTG is squeaky clean, and for some reason that is off-putting. I think mixing new and old, would give the casino more ambiance. That is what is missing at DTG, ambience.

MSS and the Cal have better VP, cheaper drinks and decent inexpensive food options. They also are very welcoming to guests.
DTG has strip prices and attitude. Most people go downtown to escape those qualities.

Strip prices? You have to have offerings before you can charge. The only way to spend money on-site (besides gambling) is at the coffee shop. Everything else has closed.

I have never paid money for a DTG room, but have stayed there four times and have seen their prices on 3rd part sites... and the prices seem very fair for the quality of room.

Not weird at all. the Cal and MSS and Fremont survive because Boyd was a genius to cater to the Hawaiian market starting in the 70's. Now there are regular charters every week from Hawaii. These planes usually carry about 220 or so passengers who mostly stay downtown for 4 or 5 nights so we are looking at a steady stream of about 800 to 1100 people a week staying at Boyd properties. Yes, it isn't much but no other hotel can almost "guarantee" a steady stream of guests like Boyd does (with overlapping charters Boyd hotels usually have at least 200 to 400 charter guests every day of the week). And there are a good amount of Hawaiians that don't take the charter since they may be able to get better deals (and comps) going ala carte.

The DTG tried to come across as a more "upscale" type of place. Initially they also tried to act like a "strip" type of property with higher minimums and more 6/5 bj games. They changed their tune when they found that many players shunned the higher "striplike" odds and minimums but that hasn't help bring in players. Because they haven't been doing well they are cutting back on things like restaurants and table times. They really need to find some way to attract more customers and get them to play there but they haven't a clue how to do that.

makiki - it's not only the Hawaiian market... Boyd has consistently had multiple $5 & $10 3:2, two-deck pitch blackjack tables, open & available 24/7...that would be at all 3 downtown properties.

As for DTG - well, they really don't seem to have a clue...but plenty of good advice has been posted here...if only they would look.

You are correct. It helps that the Boyd casinos have good gaming and odds. Fremont also has $3 tables.

But if you go to the Cal and MSS you will always see Hawaiians playing the machines or tables so they have a regular stream of customers.

I have not been to the grand yet in two trips since it was open. But seems to me from what I read here is it was a new place that was just that...a new place. They competed with properties down south on the strip not their neighbors in terms of odds at least. Maybe they thouht they'd take away customers from gn?

It really is a shame what's happening at the DTG right now. It's a beautiful place with very friendly workers and a ton of potential. Even a halfway competent management would turn it into the most popular casino Downtown. How it's been allowed to fail is beyond me.

    Thanks for all the replies.
Here is the reason I asked. Most of the strip maps said Lady Luck, and I figured out this property is where Lady Luck used to be.
I always stay on the strip comped. I contacted hosts from various properties downtown, as I loved it there last trip.

I got three nights at 4 queens, 3 nights at Golden Nugget, 3 nights at The D. But it's such a hassle to pack our stuff and move half way through the
trip. We always stay 5 nights. So they offered us five nights and I just wanted to check out opinions since it would be free and we wouldn't have to
move. I just didn't now how much of a walk to mid Freemont and if the streets are safe at night there?

But it seems even GN is better with comps and offers then Grand from what I read.

Seems if a good management team or ownership took over it could survive.

Trouble is most management teams aren't really familiar with the gambling side. Just bean counters and not hospitality people.

We stayed at DTG our last two trips, we loved the place. And after our stay in April I thought they turned a corner. The amount of people gambling, was up noticeably from previous visits. VP was worth playing dealers fun and my wife did well on slots. But after putting 10k+ worth of play per day in, they want the same amount for a weekend night from me, as someone who never played there, they can go F themselves. That's the most play we have ever given any one property, granted it was from churning our money. But any other downtown property would be giving us free weekends at that play.
