I have had some recent life changes that will impact my upcoming trip. I will be moving out of the house I have shared with my boyfriend for the past 22 years (we have been together 25 years). We will separate as friends, as really that is what our relationship has morphed into. I am excited and a bit scared to start this new chapter of my life. Dating! Yikes!

Moving expenses, new furniture, etc. means my bankroll will be about half. I debated cancelling, but decided to still go - but to be completely honest with my host. I asked if he would prefer that I cancel my offer through him and just book my buzz offer (which actually wasn’t all that different from his offer – except for the suite type). He insisted we keep the trip as it was booked, and thanked me for my honesty.

Now the question becomes, can I be a low-roller? OK, maybe just a lower roller.

I have decided that rather than playing the same number of hours, with a smaller bet per spin – that I’d rather just play 50% less hours with the same bet per spin. So that means filling some time I would normally spend gambling. What I have so far to fill the hours not spent in front of a slot machine:

Pools? These hotels have pools? Given that it is MGM Grand, I may just have to give it a try.
A show – the Australian Bee Gees.
A visit to the spa for a 75 minute Swedish massage, with aromatherapy and a scalp treatment.
A possible visit downtown as I haven’t been there in 20 years.
    Sports betting?
    Game room.

I have also promised myself that I will eat somewhere else beside the buffet and the deli.

Any other suggestions on filling the time.

I am a low roller. I seldom get comps, maybe will get a free buffet or two but that's about it. I don't gamble that much, maybe 3 - 4 hours a day at the tables and machines. The rest of the time I will go to the malls, walk around the strip, drive out to off strip properties. I also travelled to Hoover dam and the bypass road since I haven't visited the place in over 20 years. I visited the Valley of Fire, lake las vegas and mesquite. I want to visit mt. Charleston and Red Rock canyon when it is cooler (but not too cold).

Whenever I go to vegas I usually have my regular routine and places to visit. Trader Joes's. Harbor Freight, Fry's. The old Belz outlet. Visit Henderson and the galleria, golf galaxy (not to mention visiting strip clubs). Lots of time my problem is finding time to actually gamble. I usually don't like to gamble in the early evening since the tables are usually overcrowded or hard to get on so I will usually gamble during the daytime or very late at night, the few hours before I turn in.

Josie, I am recently retired, and I too had to lower my play. I just returned from my august birthday trip and I was staying at nyny and what I did was get a cheap ticket to the comendy show at Tropicana, was not to bad.

I know you've been to Vegas countless times, but you can always try to go check out some new casinos you've never been to or attractions you've never seen (no matter how many trips you've had there's always something you haven't seen/done or some place you haven't been to). I also like to do casino crawls. I usually stay at Mirage, and will grab a cab down to MB then gamble a bit at each casino while hitting up the trams until I get back to Mirage. I find it to be a good way to slow down the gambling a bit. I play the same way while doing the crawl, but I end up burning a couple of hours traveling between each one.

Outside of that, having nicer dinners will fill up time. My dining in Vegas runs the gamut from the top end steakhouses down to Chipotle. If you're used to just grabbing something quick/casual, then dining at a nice restaurant will eat up more time. It seems like my meals at places like Joe's end up being 2-3 hour experiences vs. 30-45 minute dine and dash sessions at a casual restaurant. Granted I'm always dining with company rather than solo, so drinks and convo help string that out.

The biggest key to reducing your gambling time in Vegas is to simply slow down, relax, and spend some time "smelling the roses".

You mentioned going to the spa, maybe you can spend time after your treatments to lounge around in the spa? Perhaps relax in the sauna, hot tub or cold tub?

You might "sleep in" (whatever that means to you) one morning. Sleeping in, followed by a leisurely room service breakfast while reading the newspaper (or watching your preferred morning TV show) can take a significant amount of time, but it feels sooooo nice :)

Wishing you the best in your upcoming life changes.

Play some Pai Gow... find a low-lim table & bet the minimums...easy game...social...lots of pushes! You can play for hours on $200... and be close to even when you finally color-up. If you ask, the dealer will help you set your hand 'house way' until you feel comfortable doing it yourself.

IF I had time to kill in Vegas, that's what I'd do.

Big changes. I'm a low roller. We spend a lot of time just walking around and poking our nose in places. Stopping at interesting looking bars in various casinos we may not have frequented, visiting random museums and exhibits, finding the odd show here and there, taking time out people watching - lots of stuff.

Glad to hear you have such a nice host.
I too had a major event causing us to cancel our trip.
I e-mailed my host and explain that we were cancelling and why. Yet, I never even received a simple reply like thanks or sorry.

For you think about how exciting this could be for you starting a new chapter in your life.
