You could combine every person on the site - and there are some deep pockets for sure - and you'd still be nowhere near the money required to buy a casino.

Especially a casino that lost an estimated $80-85 million dollars in the first half of this year and shows no sign of improving in the near future...

I was at SLS the day after it opened. The property is really nice, the casino and dining looked like a winner, however, it's the location and the absence of foot traffic that has them hurting. If SLS was where Tropicana, Hooters, or even Ellis Island is now it would be easily inhabited.
The Wynn-Mandalay Bay corridor is basically the Strip where most people can walk. If you can't walk it, then you're not spending money, whether it's gambling, shopping, dining, etc. at any of those places.
Never used to be that way in the 70's/80's where people would walk from Sahara or Riviera, to Desert Inn, Sands, or Frontier. Gradually people going to Vegas migrated further South to Wynn and on to Mandalay Bay.

I think that SLS is pretty close to the end...they don't just have no foot traffic, they pretty much have NO TRAFFIC at all..Sahara was "dumpy" and SLS converted that to "dumpy loft"...couldn't have been 100 people in the casino the two times I went in (4:00 in the afternoon one day, 11:00 in the morning the next day). Even Sahara had more customers than that before they decided to close the place.
I doubt that the current group of customers are spending more money there than the Sahara group did. So that would put SLS in worse shape than Sahara was in...

I hit a royal flush my first and only time at the SLS and have no desire to return. The place was dead. We left SLS and went to Circus Circus and CC was abuzz with people. It was chaos but I'm sure CC took in 10x the revenue that SLS did that day. Casinos like SLS need to learn how to have multiple personalities. To be able to be attract their target demographic when the target demographic is in town, late nights and weekends, but still be able to draw in locals and tourists during the week. Reminds me of the Revel.... same management.

Resorts World might help with traffic when it opens. But can SLS stay open that long? And even that might not do it. Maybe they need to market more heavily that they are a monorail stop. But even then there has to be a reason to go there more than once.

As said here and in other threads - it really has no chance of survival. Why throw good money after bad?

Let me put it another way. Investing money is 6:5 blackjack is a a better investment.

Not to mention you'd be combining a lot of people who would not want to own one in that location even if they could.

I hope it survives, part of the fun of Vegas for me is the choice available! I will be visiting when we are there in October (having stayed at the Sahara a few years back) just to see what they have done with it. We will gamble/drink and possibly eat there and just take in another different casino. I don't get to Vegas anywhere near as often as I would like - last time 4 years ago - due to family/job commitments, and the trip from the UK, etc and I love nothing more than Casino hopping when I have the chance. A couple of hours in each place, a few drinks, then take one to the next casino (easier downtown admittedly given the distances) and really enjoy the variety. Also gives Mrs WHU and I a bit of exercise while we are away. I hope it survives and finds a way to attract customers, if for no other reason than to keep memories of the Sahara alive!

Well, even if it does not survive that doesn't necessarily kill variety. The death rattle could last awhile, and after a bankrupcy they may still find a business model to operate it under. So my guess is you'll see some form of it operating for some time yet.

Its only the people that have really bought into the branding and stores and dining/nightlife choices there who should be worried. Because if they can't pull in the bodies for that, then it may take a significant shift downmarket.

My girlfriend and I stopped in there a few hours ago on our way to a strip club. Completely dead. I like the place but it's a ghost town. I hope it makes it but I guess it all depends on how much cash they have to burn.

It's a really nice place. But that location... Even with the monorail stop it's not a great location.

The location is just part of the problem I think. SLS is trying too hard to be something nobody's looking for at that end of the Strip. The young hip clubsters stay at Cosmo, Aria, Cromwell (maybe) and spend their time and money at the clubs on the south end/center of the Strip. SLS is just more of the same thing for them but in a bad location without the A-list celeb DJ's. Stratosphere is doing fine. Why? Because they're not trying to be something they're not. Just my 2 cents

Well, this gets back to my stance that SLS should be given a chance to get on its legs before a death sentence is decided by the crew here. Keep in mind Stratosphere did not make a profit for several years - only recently did it actually break into the black. I must have missed the threads here about how Stratosphere was trying to be something it's not or how it's tanking and won't survive.

I think some of the animosity toward SLS stems from the demographic Nazarian targeted (yes, I know he's now vapor). Yeah, he incorporated LA concepts and themes. That puts off some. Heck, we've got members here who won't even set foot in SLS because of that. But, he also put in place programs (e.g., the Code Card) for locals. My wife and I got our cards right out of the gate opening night and use them regularly. There's always some sort of 50% off special going on.

I particularly enjoy the restaurants and bars at SLS. The staff are attentive and seem eager to please. They've even arranged for my wife and I to use the pool. My HOA is in a consortium (with other Strip condos) that uses the clubs at SLS during off hours for open-bar mixers. When I'm at SLS during the week things are pretty quiet, which gives me a chance to chat with staff. On the weekends, things liven up considerably and SLS gets a good vibe.

I've heard a lot of negative talk about The STRAT on various websites as well. I've never been one of them. We stayed there two times and have enjoyed ourselves every time. The Strat is no dump, it offers great value for your money. We actually like it a lot. We stayed at the Sahara 3 years before it closed and liked it there too. No, it wasn't a classy place but it was dirt cheap and since we were on a budget back then, it did the trick for us. I very much hope the SLS will be succesful. I don't like to see any resort at the Strip do down. We will be in Vegas next week and plan to visit SLS for the first time. Very curious what it's like now.

Yeah, I'm a fan of Stratosphere as well. Their restaurants and bars offer some of the best value on The Strip. Fellini's has very good Italian food and service, McCall's has excellent steaks, and Top of The World offers a unique dining experience you just can't get elsewhere.

Enjoy your trip. I'm heading back to LV myself, after vacating it to avoid the Labor Day crowds. The funny thing is, LV cooled down for Labor Day and will be HOT again this coming week. Oh, well... this will probably be the last of the 100+ days.

Not a joke to me. I have been to Vegas for 15 years with 3-4 times a year.
Never ever take the monorail once. Don't even know where are the stops.
