    My Trip Report

    My first born son does.

For quite a few trips, I have done a very detailed trip report. However, I vowed never to do another one. We no longer have a home computer and I wasn't up to typing 6,000 plus words from my iPad. Then throw in going for three days longer than our usual six day trip (probably would be another 3,000 words) and having various relatives coming and going.....too many days and too many players to keep track of. Note: This report is totally working off a fuzzy vodka induced memory as I didn't take any notes. This will be more of an overview of another awesome trip.

My sister(s) (Minnesota/Wisconsin) and I take our annual trip to Vegas every August. My oldest son Erik lives in Houston and meets the sister(s) and mom for family bonding time..(aka drinking and gambling).

This was supposed to be a one sister/son/Henry trip that took over a whole new life. Over the holiday season, folks kept hearing about crazy antics of our Vegas vacation and everyone wanted to join us (specifically, with Erik in Vegas.....the fun one). My sister Tammy's daughter and boyfriend met us in Vegas for five days of our trip. My sister Colleen, her husband, two daughters, and their best friends, joined us for six days of the trip, and Erik and Henry joined us for seven days.

In my past reports, I have mentioned our Hawaiian friend, Henry, who we met at the CAL three trips ago. Henry has adopted us as his family. Tammy, Colleen, and I are his daughters...Erik is his grandson. Since the passing of his companion of 40 years two years ago, Henry has trouble going to Vegas without his Ann. I email Henry when our trip is booked and he joins us. If you have followed my reports regarding Henry borrowing crazy Irene $2,000....he has since borrowed her another $2,000 and still hasn't been paid back. However, he did bring me a bag of macadamia nuts from his tree in his backyard. Hands down....one of the sweetest people I have ever met.

Crap.....getting wordy again.....but just trying to give you an idea of the craziness with all the players on this trip....kind of like herding cats.

Allegiant Air pulled out of Duluth this past spring....this was our only direct flight to Vegas. Pros with Allegiant...hubby drove us to airport and dropped us off in five minutes. Cons....8:00 p.m. flight and arriving in Vegas at 11:30 p.m. We also were locked into a six day trip as Allegiant only flew out of Duluth twice per week.

Tammy and I decided "screw Allegiant"...no choice anyway. We booked Sun Country out of Minneapolis (144 miles away) and decided to go for nine full days (August 12-21). However, our flight left at 8:00 a.m so we needed to drive to Minneapolis the day before and stayed at a park and fly hotel. We decided to make this day part of our sister time and shop.

After checking in the hotel, we tried to boost the economy and went to the Mall of America. No need to go back....spent a total of $8.00 for clothes for the granddaughter.

Tammy and I loved arriving in Vegas at 10:00 a.m. as opposed to flying Allegiant and arriving at 11.30 p.m. We took the WAX bus from the airport for two dollars each....probably won't do it again. It took too much of our precious Vegas time as we missed the bus by minutes and needed to wait 45 minutes for the next one.

The bus dropped us off (finally) at Walgreens. Tammy and I had two full days alone before the madness arrived. We checked into The Grand on my two free night offer, slot play, and food credit. We love downtown and have been staying here exclusively since the early nineties. Our routine always consists of unpacking while celebrating with a cocktail. Next step is sit at our first blackjack table of the trip.

EPIC FAIL.... a sign is displayed in the gaming area that the tables open at 2:00 p.m. Tammy and I went to our home base (the CAL) and played cards for over five hours. This is five hours of play that The Grand missed out on. Back to The Grand around 8:00 p.m. and played cards with one of the best dealers ever and a sister/brother from Canada. This was one of those couples that you hope to see again. We planned on meeting again the next night.....same time, same place. However, plans foiled as the sister partied too hard with us Wednesday and ended up going to bed at 8:00 p.m. Thursday evening. However, her brother showed up and you could tell he was also suffering from the previous night.

Thursday Tammy and I took advantage of being on our own and took the shuttle to Sam's Town. We both love the plethora of machines and we also ate at the buffet.

While at Sam's Town, Tammy got a text from our new friend that we met at the pool that morning telling us that downtown was flooding and the air conditioning was down in both the casino and hotel. Obviously, being at Sam's with no windows, we hadn't a clue on the rain Vegas was getting.

Friday morning, we enjoyed the awesome pool at The Grand one last time. We went to The Cal and checked in for the next seven nights (I had four free nights and Tammy had three nights). Friday evening we met up with Tammy's daughter, boyfriend, Erik and Henry. We had one of those fun tables with no big losers (several winners) and catching up with everyone. Lots of blackjack side bets going on, alcohol flowing too fast, fist pumping....perfect Friday nite in Vegas.

All of us were staying at the CAL so we usually met each morning at the pool to catch up. As standard procedure, Erik refuses to give out his room number to anyone. I have no idea what he thinks we would do to him if we had this top secret information.

Throughout our nine days downtown, we only ventured to the strip one evening to see a hypnotist show at Planet Hollywood. We saw Marc Savard....tickets were $17.00 at the 1/2 price ticket booth. Decent show for the money. Of course, we were hoping someone from our group of 11 would go on stage..... all too chicken.

During our trip, we mainly played between the three Boyd properties. Cards were difficult this time.....but we got hooked on the "Super Fun 21" blackjack at MSS. One evening, Tammy went off somewhere to her beloved machines and I headed over to MSS to the Super Fun 21 table. My BIL, Erik, and Henry were there. Omg....Erik who is a neat freak and always stacks his chips color coded.....had total messy chips in front of him. The mom in me sees trouble in his future. A woman about my age is sitting next to him encouraging him to bet more and laughing at his antics. I keep telling him to slow down on the beers and he decides to adopt this woman as his new mom...she is much nicer than me. Lol....whatever.

I was ready to leave Erik to his own demises and have Henry in charge....but felt it was a "mom" job. About 11:00 p.m. I knew he was way over the edge and potentially could see him falling off his chair into the pit. I said lets get you to your room and call it a night (remember, he has issues letting us know his room number). I took his chips to the cashier and cashed him out at $555. Said goodnight to Henry and BIL and struggled to get Erik up the escalator and across the walkway to the CAL. He wanted to continue the "fun" and go out with the mom and play cards at Fremont and continue bonding. Not going to happen....I just wanted to get him safely to his room and in bed.

Now we have an issue. We are in the elevators at the Cal....where he doesn't let anyone know his room number. The entire "stumble walk" from MSS to the Cal was ridiculous.... and to top it off he had to use the washroom. He has me stopping on different floors and also going down the fire escape.....the entire time telling me he had to go to the bathroom, he wanted his money, etc. I firmly told him the sooner we got to his room, the sooner he could use the bathroom and I would give him his winnings.

About 30 minutes of playing this entertaining (sarcasm inserted) game, Erik finally pushes floor 16. Again, with the games as this is the floor Tammy and my room is on. He stumbles down the long hallway and inserts his room key into the door right next to mine. WTF? For the past five days, he has heard Tammy and I talking, waited til he heard our door close in the morning to go to the pool, used the fire escape to go down a floor and take the elevator from floor 15....kind of trapped like a rat in his own room.

He quickly uses the bathroom and I turn down his bed and fluff the pillows. He isn't happy that I am in his room, he wants his money, and wants to go out on FSE. Again, I tell him I will give him his money after he takes off his shoes and lays down. Lol....he is furious with me as I am propped up on the second bed, scanning TV channels, etc. He firmly tells me for at least the tenth time to leave. Very calmly I tell him that isn't a problem as I will leave after he lays down. Erik then threatens to call his wife to tell on me (2:00 am Texas time). I am laughing at this and he calls her to report his mom won't leave his room......"click". I told him maybe he should call someone who cared. He storms out of the room and heads down the long hallway. Of course, he is back in minutes insisting I leave. I still am channel surfing asking him what program he would like to watch. My calmness is infuriating him and he leaves again. This time he is knocking on the door to my room. I stick my head out the door of his room and nicely tell him that it is obvious that Tammy isn't back yet. Lol....now he says he is calling his wife again. This time he calls to ask how his oldest son is doing......click.

Out he goes again telling me how mad he is at me. The next time he enters the room, he has Tammy with him (who is confused as hell). Tammy had gotten off the elevator to go to bed only to find Erik sitting on the couch on our floor in front of the elevators. She is surprised to see him and he tells her to follow him and keeps repeating how mad he is. She goes down the long hallway with him only to have him open the door NEXT to our room and sees me calmly laying on the bed watching tv.

By this time she and I are laughing at the fact that for the past five days Erik had been in the room right next to us. Of course, our cackling and me not leaving and not giving him his winnings, really is pissing him off. He threatens to call security....which only makes Tammy and I laugh even harder.

He picks up the phone and starts punching in a ton of numbers.... as Tammy and I are watching him with amusement. We hear him say that his mom won't leave his room and also won't give him his money. Erik then says that no he is not joking and he wants his mom to leave. After hanging up the phone, Tammy says goodnight and I tell her I will see her once Erik lays down. Erik is now sitting on the bed having a stare down with me. I am calmly watching tv and thumbing through a Vegas magazine telling him I am even more stubborn than him and two can play this game all night.

About 15 minutes later, a loud knock on the door saying "Security". (Keep in mind this whole debauchery took over two hours.). I opened the door to THREE security guards saying they got a call and were here to check if everything was okay. I calmly said that my son was shitfaced and wanted to walk down FSE with thousands of dollars in cash on him. As his mom, I felt it was a safety issue that he stay in the room and go to bed. Erik somehow managed to get to the door where they asked him if he was okay. Again, he said his mom wouldn't leave the room. They asked him how old he was....it took him awhile to figure it out....math is hard. One of the security guards then asked me where my room was. Lol....it was fun to respond "right next door". They asked me if I was listed as a registered guest in Erik's room. Of course, I wasn't and legally had to leave.

It was obvious the security guards were amused by the situation and were 100 percent on my side. As I left, I threw Erik's winnings on the bed and told him I wasn't talking to him the next day. I heard one of the guards tell him that his mom was right and he should stay put for the night.

After a good night sleep, usual 8:45 pool time. My BIL, Erik, and other relatives had planned to meet at The Plaza for the 10:30 poker tournament. Tammy and I did bump into our BIL and asked how Erik was doing. BIL said he seemed kind of quiet.

Tammy and I had a fun afternoon playing cards at the Fremont and then shared an awesome pasta dish at Claim Jumper at the Golden Nugget. I made my way back to the Cal and Tammy headed off to find that elusive winning machine. Henry was sitting at a blackjack table with several available spots. Henry told me that Erik had been by minutes before asking if he had seen me. A nice young man sitting next to me asked if that was my son that was just there. I begrudgingly admitted he was. He said he genuinely felt bad for him as he was looking for his mom as he thought he may or may not need to apologize for something he may have or may not have done.

Wtf.....said, yes my son called security on me and three guards came to the room to escort me out. Lol..... all sympathy towards Erik was gone. Henry is dying with laughter at his "grandson", the dealer is having trouble dealing the cards with the image of security being called on me, and the rest of the table is cracking up. Minutes later, Erik walks up behind me and says "hi, mom". I am trying to ignore him, but the table is enjoying the scene that is playing out. Of course, the dealer is asking him if it was true that he really called security on his mom. I could tell Erik was slowly piecing together the events of the previous night. He wants to hug me and apologize, but I still wasn't ready to let him off the hook so easily. Of course, the table is encouraging us to hug it out. Ugh......hug. After forgiving him, we had a fun afternoon playing cards. Of course, Erik had to run with the line of threatening to call security anytime the dealer had a blackjack, etc., reminding everyone that he won't hesitate. After all, he did call security to remove his mom from his room.

Another great trip in the books for sure. Gambling wise, it wasn't a profitable trip for me. Cards were difficult and couldn't find that winning machine. However, our airfare was under $300, nine free nights in Vegas, and food expenses were under $30.

Next August..... annual THREE sister trip, one son, and Henry. Later.....

OMG so funny. I have a son just like that so know exactly how you feel. After taking my son, daughter and her boyfriend to Vegas we were on the plane home to the UK when my son was a total PITA. Unbeknown to me, him and the daughters's boyfriend had been drinking vodka and red bull in the airport whilst daughter and me were looking in the shops and chilling out. Got in the plane and he starts being a pain after I give them all a sleeping tablet so they can sleep. Well the tablet and the drink didn't mix (I think it was the red bull rather than the alcohol) and it was awful trying to shut him up. He had his sister in tears and nearly came to blows with his sister's boyfriend. He was really creating about wanting another tablet because he couldn't sleep. Finally I gave in, kill or cure, lol, it was that or cause a real problem on the plane. The stewardess had already had words.

The best bit of all, he awake as we landed and said 'wow, what a great flight, I slept all the way, best flight I've ever had'. We all just looked at each other and he had no recollection whatever of the whole thing. Quite scary really!

Thanks for taking the time to read everybody.

electro guy....Henry borrowed Irene an additional $2,000. She told Henry she needed it to fly home to Thailand to attend her sister's funeral. I told him to stop it!

Corrine....thanks for the story and glad you could relate.

OMG C, I was laughing out loud reading your trip report....had to read it to George and remind him who Erik is. Too funny!! You should have rolled him when you had the chance lol. I am definitely going to plan to meet you next August if it is just the 3 sisters and Erik for an evening of BJ. I'll make sure I get a terrace room at Cosmo so we can have a drink of the terrace on your strip day. That view puts Erik in a good mood lol.

Henry is too nice....Irene is taking advantage of that!

Good idea....too bad he is only a beer drinker. And we swear the servers at MSS and the CAL are on roller blades. They are too fast.

OMG, the next day Erik was telling us detail by detail on how he was constantly sneaking down the fire escape to take the elevator from different floors, etc. Seemed like a lot of work.....especially on a vacation. What are the odds that our rooms were next to each other?

Bre...lol...the thought of rolling him crossed my mind several times. For sure, we would combine a trip to the strip for cocktail(s) at the Cosmo. Cards downtown are a must! I see your trip is coming up.....have a great time.

Thanks all for reading....only in Vegas!
