MSS Food Coupon Book

A recent poster mentioned receiving a MSS food coupon book. Does anyone know what the level of play would need to be to obtain one? What food coupons would it include?
Also, I think I recall hearing a poster from Hawaii say that they had a food coupon book. Would that have been some type of package deal? About 25 years ago, on our first trip to MSS, we booked through a travel agent and received a food coupon book. This was back when the current Casino Host/Slot Tournament Area was the third eating place at MSS, but I can't remember what it was called. Does Anyone?

 

The Aloha food coupon books do come with the Boyd Hawaiian air packages to downtown Las Vegas. They are also included with some level of casino comp marketing offers to non Hawaiians. Recently they seem to be changing up the offer criteria at MSS/Cal, so while you will get responses, I don't think any of them are going to be firm or reliable enough to ensure that you can count on getting a future marketing offer with the meal book with a certain dollar amount of play. Not to mention, you might need 3 trips at whatever level is required to start getting the offers at that level.

The coupon book covers 3 meals daily (one coupon for each day for breakfast, lunch, and dinner), and is accepted in most of the non premium Boyd owned downtown casino restaurants. The menu items covered with the coupons are limited to items designated with a small palm tree next to the menu item. Also, daily specials are usually eligible for meals with the coupon at lower end places like the Cal Market Street Cafe (coffee shop). The coupons have a dollar value on them that can be used at the premium restaurants or for non palm tree menu items, but the dollar value is very low. For instance, one of the dinner coupons is worth about $3 if you use it for the cash value.

What many people do is use the remaining unused coupons at the end of the trip for cash value at the Cal Snack Bar. You can get non hot foods like cookies, candy, and canned drinks that you can take with you.

I used to get this coupon book with about 5k coin in per day. I ramped my play to $10k per day and started getting a silver card which is good at the same places but includes all menu items. As noted by zignerlv, my offers have been downgraded significantly and I don't really know why. I have an upcoming stay and I think I will play lighter than the norm and see what happens. My current offer is 3 free nights and 2 $10 food comps and0 free play. This is absolutely terrible for my level of play so my loyalty is quickly disappearing. As a reference point, I did one day of $10k coin in at Sam's Town (also Boyd) and the follow up offer is 5 nights, $125 free play and a gold card.

 

Interesting info on the Hawaiian air packages/coupon book. I really never paid attention to the small palm tree next to some items on the menu. Now that I looked at menu online and read the footnote, makes sense.
I can understand how some Hawaiians would feel more comfortable eating at the MSS, Cal, and Freemont. For my wife and myself, the coupon book would be somewhat wasted as we like to spread our eating areas around.
I remember back to the book we had 25 years ago. We were there for a week and hated to spend money eating anywhere else when we could eat for "free" with the coupon. It did restrict the area we traveled to. We also found ourselves eating more than we should just to use the coupons. Actually, the book turned out to be a somewhat controlling influence on our vacation, so perhaps better off without it.

 

Yes, I know what you mean. I tend to get comps besides the coupon books, when I get them, so we just use the coupons for one breakfast at the coffee shop, and a nice bowl of Saimin soup for lunch at the Cal Club (Snack Bar). The rest we use when we check out for food from the Cal Club (usually sushi) to take out for the trip home, so the rest aren't wasted.

 

We have the same offer as you for our October trip except our food is 2 $20 comps. Don't really track our daily play, but for a reference my wife and I mainly play max quarter VP and some minimum play slot. We generally spend 5 nights at MSS and 2 comp nights at Palms. We avoid the strip but do visit other non Boyd Downtown properties especially 4 queens, some Binions, and 1 afternoon at Cortez. Never go in the D due to blaring music (makes my ears ring). Plaza due to that smell, but heard their changing that. LV Club for obvious reasons which I guess don't matter anymore. Golden Nugget because of poor vp. Have not yet visited the Grand due to poor vp and looks like it will have another name before I ever do.
Sounds like you might want to take Sam's Town up on their offer.

 

The Grand seems to be constantly changing, but our last two trips I double booked there and the bar paytables were decent for VP.

 

I hope the Sam's offer keeps repeating for a while. The upcoming trip is solo so the food offer is wasted. 4Q offer is $300 free play and $50 in food which is ideal for a solo trip.

At Downtown Grand's Furnace Bar, the DDB at quarters is 8/5 with a progressive. At 50 cents and dollars, the DDB is 9/6 but no progressive. When the progressive for AWAK is close to $900 and the progressive for the Royal approaches $2000 the quarter game is fun to play.

Still waiting to hear the name of the third eating place the MSS had about 25 years ago when it first opened. I'm almost sure it was in the area where the current players cards are given out? Can anyone nail that one?
I used to enjoy the shrimp dinner.

Yeah the restaurant that closed down is/was the Pullman grille. They now use that space as a staging area for the vacations Hawaii charter groups to assemble for the airport bus. It's kind of sad and a waste of such a great space

 

Yes the Pullman closed but that was just a few years ago. I'm talking about the eating place that closed OVER 20 years ago.
When we make our Oct trip I'll ask around until I get the name. Then I'll post it. About a dozen years ago I was going through my LV folder and threw out the coupon book with the remaining food coupons I had from our first trip about 25 years ago.. Kicking myself now for throwing out a small piece of MSS history.

Just FYI, you can use those aloha coupons for meals at the cal lanai and the fremont lanai. Not sure if you can use them at the other restaurants such as redwood grille or the aloha specialties restaurant upstairs. If you use them for a non palm tree item or at the cal lanai you will only get a certain face value, usually listed on the coupons. At the end of people's stays they usually use the coupons to pick up candies, popcorn, sodas, sushi or pastries or cookies. The coupons have an imprint through them listing the last day of your stay so you cannot use them if the are expired.

 

Sorry that name doesn't ring a bell. I'm sure the restaurant I'm referring to was open before Boyd bought the property. After Boyd bought MSS, they may have closed the restaurant to make room for Players Club. Just a guess.
There may have originally been a place called Feisty Kates before I ever went there. My first trip was around 25 years ago BEFORE MSS closed down for a few years and before Boyd's bought it.

 

After sleeping on it last night, I'm thinking the name of the old restaurant at MSS could be as easy as Main Street Station Coffee Shop. Not to be confused with a Starbucks coffee shop. It was actually a place you could order a reasonable meal.
