Our annual shrimp boil is coming up in a few weeks. We're thinking about gulf shrimp this year and I'm seeing a number of mail order outfits. Does anyone have any supplier experience to share? Thanks.

    Alaskan?

(No Costco on this one. Still an area they fail -- SE Asian farmed.)

You say Gulf but then mention Alaska. To me gulf means Gulf of Mexico.
I'd try something like Cajun Grocer http://www.cajungrocer.com/fresh-foods-gulf-shrimp-c-1_15_35.html

Get some boudin and alligator while you at it.

Whenever I think of Gulf of Mexico seafood, I think of the sea life with mutations due to the BP oil spill

South Florida shrimp had no effect from oil spill. Pink shrimp from keys is the best you can get. Won't get any not frozen, unless you get them right off the boat.

Try googling Pensacola mail order seafood. Had some great seafood ordered when I was there and delivered to home, but I can't remember the name of the market. So fresh that ladies are cleaning it right in front of you as it comes off of the boat and packing it right in front of you.

I live close to South Padre Island and I get my shrimp from Texas Gulf Trawling which is in right outside of Port Isabel. They offer shrimp right off the boat, it is frozen at sea to ensure quality. I called them just to get some pricing and their availability varies. Right now they have 10/15 for $12.50 a pound if you buy 5 lbs and they ship fedex. The routinely have U12 as well. I just got to ask though, to the OP if you live in Cali what is wrong with using Pacific prawns? If you are interested their # is 956-831-7828

P.S. Right now the boats are still going out.

That was a second line of inquiry, since some in the sustainability game frown on trawled gulf (of Mexico) shrimp.

Love boudin, alligator leaves me flat.

That's not one that came up in my search, thanks. As for prawns, it's a regional thing ... they're still shrimp. In common parlance I think we tend to call big shrimp (don't go there) prawns.

Heading down there in a couple of weeks, it's on my radar. Not sure if it's spiny lobster season or not. Hogfish is a must.

The BP spill affected the oyster industry and I think I read that some of the settlement money is starting to flow to those affected busineses, but unfortunately, many could not play the waiting game.

I know you mentioned gulf shrimp ken but if you're willing to give their site a look, check out legalseafoods.com.
    Fantastic mail order section!

I'm originally from the Boston area and I know first hand (chomp, chomp) the shrimp is exceptional.

They even have a variety of shrimp packages. Lots of deliciousness there.

They've also been committed to sustainability for over 30 years.
