Table Games Blackjack at MGM Grand

Although I've been to Vegas many times, I've never stayed or gambled at MGM Grand. Staying there this evening to partake in a meal at Joel Rubochon. Would appreciate any insight on playing BJ at MGM Grand. Any 3:2 tables left, or are they all 6:5 now? The HL area is in the Mansion correct? What is the typical table minimums there?

There are still 3:2 tables on the floor -- I played DD on a weekend night over 4th of July -- $100 mins, $50 during the day. I'm sure they have shoe games, too.

 

There are also high limit tables inside Whiskey Down.. right off the casino floor.

 

In the pit between the high limit slots and the craps tables, they should have $50 DD during the day and at least one $25 3:2 6-deck game, except on busy days/weekends. I was actually able to play at a $25 6-deck game in that pit on Friday night at around 8pm, which shocked me.

They had fewer tables open Sunday night, none of which were less than $50, so I asked the pit if they were slow enough, what time would they drop them to $25? He said I could play $25 at one of the empty $100 tables, which I thought was quite nice.

Also noteworthy: the day they made the switch to the 6:5 paytables on the majority of their other tables, Whiskey Down was dead and I talked the pitboss there into letting me play for $25. That was a huge win, because I love whiskey, so I was able to get better drinks there than out on the floor.

Bottom line is, if it's slow enough, it doesn't hurt to ask for $25. If you're comfortable at $50+, you shouldn't have any trouble finding a 3:2 shoe game on most nights

AceTen...you'll be fine...plenty of good blackjack on the strip at your level of play... I believe the $25 double-deck game is still available at the Mirage...and it's always been either $25 or $50.
It's a 3:2 S17 game, with DAS & DAT.
That's about as good a game of blackjack that you'll find anywhere in Vegas.

 

Thanks topcard. Not sure I'm going to make it to Mirage this trip unfortunately, but you never know. I'll keep an eye out for that game in the future though. I agree, not going to get a better game on the strip.

 

did MGM change their DD to a mini shoe as well? they used to deal it pitch, man that was the best DD on the strip if not best blackjack game.

 

They don't deal any pitch anymore unless they know you and you request.

 

jingber, I tried replying to your PM but your inbox is full. The DD is mini-shoe, as shifter pointed out. A MGM floor person told me that there are two DD tables -- one in WD, and the other wedged somewhere between two six-deck shoes. I went to the latter -- it was further into the casino, somewhere around the high-limit slot area, I think (but don't quote me on that).

the DD in the Mansion was also changed to mini shoe on my last trip a few weeks ago. Of course I got them to ditch that shit and go back to my usual pitch game. Need the shift manager OK to get that approved. As Shifter pointed out, they know me well so it was no problem, but may not always happen if you are not a regular player there.

The Mansion during day / midweek may have a $100 table open, usually it will be $300 during day on weekends. Weekend nights will be $500 minimum or higher depending on what events are going on at the time.

 

I'll be in Vegas in a few weeks (first two days at Caesars then off to MGM) and I'll be looking around for the least bad BJ game I can find at the 25 dollar level, but right now I am only savvy enough to ensure I am playing a 3:2 game can somebody please clue me in as to what DAS and DAT stand for? Thanks!

 

DAS = double down after split.
DAT (or sometimes called DOA) = Double Any Two cards (double-on-any)
S17 = the dealer stands on soft 17 (A-6)
H17 = the dealer hits soft 17
LS = late surrender
RSA = re-splitting aces allowed
CSM = continuous shuffle machine
DD = double-deck

The very best game in my opinion is a: 3:2 DD, S17, DAS, DAT, LS & RSA... but you'll never find one! (LS & RSA are generally only available on 6-to-8 deck shoes & CSMs)
These days, if you can find a 3:2 double-deck game that allows DAS, you're doing pretty well.
Some folks are more comfortable playing a shoe game...if so, you should try to find one with LS & RSA (as well as DAS & DAT). S17 will be tough to find anywhere except in high-limit rooms, but you could get lucky... I understand that MGM used to deal a 6-deck game with LS, RSA, DAS...and it was a S17 table.
Supposedly, the Mirage still has a DD game that's S17 @ $25 minimums.

Yes they do. $25 mins during slow times. $50+ when busy.

 

I was at the Mirage last week and that game is now H17 and dealt out of a mini shoe.

 

they have a table right outside the high limit room that is S17
You must be talking about the table closer to where you purchase show tickets? or next to the high limit slots and casino host office
those are the H17

 

The table I'm talking about is right in front of the high limit room. I played there last Thursday. The S17 table is no more.
