I usually only pay tournaments, so I am new to cash games. When leaving a cash game, it is alright to be asked to be colored up?

Most rooms have a cashier desk and will pay you cash

Just find some chip racks and put all you have in em and take them to the cage. Not unheard of to have several hundred dollars in "reds" for example, it's totally cool.

Non poker player here with a question that didn't warrant a new thread and is kind of related to the op's question. I was listening to one of the Vegas podcasts (You can bet on that---I think) and a question came up regarding poker etiquette. The debate was that someone wanted to leave the table (to piss or something) and take his chips with him but have his spot saved. They made this sound like a big no-no because he could rathole some chips and come back and play with fewer chips than he left with. My thought was who gives a shit? So he leaves with $1,000 and comes back with $300 (or whatever). Why is that a big deal?

    Thanks.

Poker tables never have higher denomination chips to color up (usually just $5 and $1 chips), you always have to collect your chips and take to the cashier. As mentioned above most poker rooms have a cashier in the room.

This is commonly called ratholing or "going south."

I get why someone would want to do it, but it is not far to the other players. You would have a table that everyone bought in and if they chose they could just continually remove chips which would devalue the game. Also, most card rooms prohibit it, likely because it would kill the action.

As posted earlier, you should just rack up and leave. All decent poker rooms have a poker cashier. The ones that don't are close to a casino cashier.

It is generally acceptable to color up during the game if you have an awkward amount of chips. I don't like to play with a lot of stacks, so when I get to around 800 in a NL game I'll color up a rack of red to a stack of green. This may not be allowed everywhere, but it's fairly common.

Poker games are table stakes and once a check is in play it only leaves the table through rake, tips, or a player leaving. If you have large checks on the table (or cash where allowed), you should be allowed to state how much you're taking off the table when you go to the restroom or whatever. Just remember that you have to put it back on when you come back. You'll probably get some static if you do this, but the casino is not responsible for your checks. If some lowlife comes by and grabs a couple of black chips out of your stack that's your problem.

Yes you can take the large chips but taking all your chips is not ok.

    Just ask for a cover.

Poker rooms are about the safest place to leave money.

I've left tens of thousands completely unwatched for hours and never an issue.

I used to play poker and in a semi big 5/10 nl game (50/100 local). It's a no-no to ever take chips or cash off of the table besides tipping (cash no longer an option). If you go to the restroom, everything stays on the table until you want to stop playing and cash out.

As you said, a player leaving with 1k and coming back with 300 behind is not gonna happen. I've never seen a room let a player do that. They always need to leave the chips on the table unless the player is leaving the game.

Edit: just spoke with my good friend who plays professionally for a living (vegas local) and apparently chips coming off of the table while taking a break and not being returned to the game happens often.

The big deal is for example, if they come back with 300 after ratholing a 1000 and get into a pot that requires a bet of 500 and they only have 300 on the table, they can go all in without risking the other 200.

    You never count your money
When you're sittin' at the table
There'll be time enough for countin'
    When the dealin's done

This is generally not the norm and I haven't played anywhere where you can actually do this unless you are taking it all off or paying for food/drink. Now granted I have not played everywhere, in fact I am limited to Casinos/Poker rooms in Canada and Las Vegas. In the case where you cash out there is generally a time out period which you must serve before coming back to the table to buy in for less than you take off the table. For instance in our local poker room that time period is 2 hours. Let's say you buyin for $200 and after a couple hours you decide to cash out with $400 with the intention of coming back later. If you return and want to sit back in before the 2 hour time period is up then you must buyin for the full 400 you left with, if you return after the 2 hour period you are free to buyin for whatever amount you wish. The purpose of the rule is to prevent hit and run sessions where an individual wins a large pot, cashes out and then comes back 10 minutes later and buy back in for the minimum.

Dude it's totally the other way around.

Real players want you to add more and more money.

Going south is severely frowned upon to the point of boycotting a game.

you cannot possibly have played like that in vegas?? That is so magnificently and totally backwards that it must have been in some local village game in the local parking lot casino.

Just for the sake of confusion:

If you take money off the table, you damn well bring it back when you sit down again
If you pick up your stack and move to another table of the same limit, you take your ENTIRE stack with you
If you cash out, go for dinner and come back an hour or so later, then decide to play again, you sit down with the ENTIRE stack you cashed out with.

I appreciate that what you've done is through utter unawareness of the rules and etiquette, but now you know!

Just for the sake of completeness, I have played somewhere where going south was accepted and in fact a casino rule. Sydney australia. Poker was relatively new in the casino, and government regs came up with that rule because they were scared of NL and didn't want people going broke too quickly. I have not come across anywhere else in the world was this was allowed.

I don't play poker so I really don't get this. So it's ok to take your money (and winnings) and leave and not come back? But if you come back you better be prepared to lose all of your winnings? Sounds to me you are a poor sport and getting all pissy because the dude won your money. Not you personally, but you in the general sense if that's how poker players think.

It depends on how long your break is.

If you leave for a few hours you can come back with whatever you want.

But if it's just an hour for dinner it's bad form to go south.

If you have given up your seat at the table, you are more than welcome to buy back in at any denomination you wish (minding the min/max buy-ins). However, if you take a break and expect not to lose your seat, you are expected to come back to your place with the same stack you left with.

If you cash out, you cash out. If you buy back into a game after cashing out, it's only for the table max... you can't sit down again with more than the max.

Switching tables is not cashing out. You can move your entire stack to a new table.
