SW is looking to increase its markets. That being said they might look at acquiring AK and HI airlines as that would certainly help our HI and AK members as LAS is such a big hub in the west. Will it come to be time will tell.

That could be bad news. Many airlines use HI airlines as a code share partner and you know SW will shut that down.

You're right less competition and if it does happen fares to HI will head north or so I think. Boy would SW be the heavyweight in the west with those markets.

The more I think about it, I can't see anyone allowing the majors to acquire more airlines. We are almost at the point of needing some trust busting in the industry.

This is a link to what I found online.....

    http://beatofhawaii.com/southwest-hawaii-airline-update/

It looks like they are planning Hawaii to West Coast flights but says nothing about a buyout/merger with either AK or HI Air. We would love to see some quality competition in the inter island market place but that would be an afterthought it seems...

I feel like taking hawaiian out of the staralliance would be bad for most of us...as a Hawaii resident, this worries me.

I agree, I rather SW does not merge with Hawaiian. I also want SW to enter the Hawaii market, that way there will be some fare wars so I hope it keeps the prices down.

Strange why SW is taking so long, a few months ago Virgin entered the market and they already started taking reservations for the fall. Not sure what is delaying SW into the Hawaii market, we really need more fare wars.

When SWA bought the 800 series of 737s, the speculation was it was in preparation to enter the Hawai'i market. I don't know how much weight I'd give to the merger rumor. The recent announcement that the DOJ would be looking at airlines colluding to limit seats and routes to keep capacity high and thus keep prices artificially high, would seem to be a big detriment for any merger approval, especially since HA and AKA are both profitable.
