I remember when this story first came out a few months ago and now it struck me as overly-dramatic hyperbole. It's ridiculous to say things like, "Casinos no one wants to visit in Las Vegas." That's meant to hook the reader into the story - but it's not necessarily reality.

For example, the author claims Circus Circus is "underperforming." Now, that's different than gaining a low Yelp rating. Circus Circus consistently out-performed many of the heavily-indebted mega Strip casinos during the recent recession. And, it continues to make profits for MGM - because MGM has not had to sink much money into it. It doesn't make as much as the mega resorts - but it does not have to, because it does not have the investment load. Yeah, Circus Circus obviously needs some rehab. But, it apparently has a loyal customer base that overlooks the flaws.

For what it's worth, I regularly read the Motley Fool and think it does a good job most of the time - but this is not one of those times.

I think one of the reasons people dislike Circus Circus is because it has more kids than anywhere else. The adults go to Vegas to have adult fun without the kids. But again, many people like it because they can be in Vegas and have their kids entertained also. They may not like CC for themselves but will settle for their kids. It's somewhat of a "medium" for them. Some adults just don't have the choice of dropping off their kids to the in-laws.

I know when I was a kid, I wished my parents took me to CC. They just stayed at an off-strip motel, and I remember the awful stench in those rooms. At least it didn't have mirrors on the ceiling, although I don't think that would have stopped them from staying there.

CET used to be called the evil empire====They are not the gamblers friendliest site..
Circus Circus does well because it is a family, read kids, place/ will be there forever with nothing but condos and convention center around it. Sounds like a good investment to me...

A hotel with a theme park attached and you wonder why there are kids wandering around. Then you are suprised that, for $40 your didnt get a 4 star property. All the while knowing what the prices of the other places are.

    Are people really that dense?

Great post. Circus Circus is on the disliked list because it's too crowded... Hello. That place is packed. It's not for me but you can't argue that they're giving their clientele what they want.

Circus circus isn't for me. But that doesn't mean they don't have their market. They wouldn't keep it open if didn't make money.

My personal hell would be stuck for eternity at Circus Circus on the Friday after Thanksgiving with no money. That place is a mad house with 1000s kids running around.

That being said I love the steakhouse. It's like a different world that most of lower middle class families from so Southern California never see.

I wonder if the steakhouse has a back door entrance where you can avoid the public.

Sorry to sound like some type of elitist but screaming kids isn't my idea of a fun/relaxing vegas vacation.

And I don't know if Id say hate this place but it's bad, Diamond Jacks Bossier City. Great video poker pay tables at 25ยข but it's just depressing. The vp bar is a bartender who hates her life and serves well drinks out of a beverage gun. No bottles on the bar at all. All gun. Though on the upside, a dollar tip gets you refills on the quick of rot gut liquor

As do I. The Steakhouse at Circus Circus easily competes with all the uber expensive steak joints on The Strip. Great food, good service and a heck of a value.

You guys make it sound like Gremlins or something. I've been there a dozen times over the years and I've seen double strollers and soccer moms. I know this sounds crazy, but I've never seen kids running around the place like mad, screaming and firing slingshots at the craps table. CC smells and granted the place isn't what we're all looking for in a vacation destination, but the screaming kids mantra is overstated.

I always enjoy your posts eddie :) You get straight to the point.

The most expensive hotel we've ever paid for in Vegas was the Circus Circus on a Saturday night...(IIRC, $109 a night in March 2013). We could have used a comped stay at NYNY or MGM but chose the Circus Circus instead. We had our kids with us so the cost was worth it because it was part of the cost of their entertainment. It meant they would have an enjoyable night and that in turn meant that we would have an enjoyable night.

Circus Circus should not be on that list. The fact that there are lots of kids running around means it's serving it's purpose. Those that stay there enjoy it for a reason.

That said, I wouldn't choose to stay there if it was just my husband and I. But there is certainly nothing wrong with it, their rooms were just fine. Sharing space with kids having fun in Vegas isn't a bad thing.

just curious. Does anyone know why CC is not listed as an MLife property on their site and has a different reward card.

I have mixed feelings about CC. I'll go there to gamble about every other trip a little pretty much out of nostalgic purposes.

LVC, however is truly a dump. It depresses me to even walk by it.

Usually when you see that, the ownership is maintaining another gaming license by not fully integrating an acquisition into the fold. But I am not sure if that is the case here.

But as to the article, I am not getting Motley Fool's obsession with trolling Yelp for blog content. I don't know that much about the average Yelp user, but I have seen enough to know that I can't solely rely on it for making a judgement. CC has a three and a half on Tripadvisor. I guess cross referencing would destroy the premise the article, huh?
