Golden Nugget Dinner Buffet

Anyone tried the Golden Nugget Dinner Buffet lately? Any good, large selection etc.

 

Have stayed at the Nugget numerous times. We're not gourmet diners. It is adequate. Nothing fancy, clean, good service, drinks are kept full etc.Hot foods are generally hot, and colds are the way they are meant to be. Not on a level with Wynn or Bellagio. Somewhat better than better than Main Street Station, in my opinion. The menu has the usual suspects, chicken, shrimp, some carving station items. Actually I prefer the breakfast there. Not being derisive toward MSS but I think their quality has slipped a bit. I would give it a strong B. Enjoy.

 

Ditto PPtraderal's observations. We've stayed at the Nugget numerous times, most recently in March. We usually eat at the buffet a couple of times. Breakfast is a better value. Dinner is adequate but unexceptional. They don't clear the place out between lunch and dinner, so if you're flexible consider a late lunch. It's pretty much the same stuff as dinner, and you can linger into the dinner serving time.

I agree that Main Street Station has slipped. It used to be a must, now we don't even bother. For breakfast, also consider the Fremont. Half the price of the Nugget and not that much different (it's hard to screw up breakfast).

 

selection is limited if you enjoy variety I would pass on it. I agree quality is above MSS and fremont but lack of selection is a turn off for me

I'm a GN regular and I love the breakfast buffet, great value, but I'm not a huge fan of the dinner buffet. Service is good and the food is fine but I'd rather shell out another $20 or so and have a helluva great dinner buffet on the strip.

 

Had it for dinner last trip in March. Was very disappointed. Poor selection and in my opinion just not good. I'm by no means a snob. after all I'm eating a casino buffet, but definitely would not repeat. Far better to walk to MSS and try that one.

 

Agreed that the breakfast is really enjoyable and lunch is pretty good as well but there are better dinner options elsewhere for variety and quality.

 

I think it is really difficult to evaluate a buffet. Ask particular questions. I do the Golden Nugget for breakfast or lunch using the $10 poker room voucher. It is my favorite in downtown. It exceeds my needs for foods that don't spike blood sugar. MSS had very few foods that I can eat. However, I used to love MSS. It really depends on what you want to eat.

 

I think for the $20+ price range, GN dinner is below average in terms of quality/price.

 

I agree. It's a poor value.

 

And those differences in our evaluations is why I suggest asking particular questions.
I can't fully evaluate the GN dinner buffet because I usually take the better value of a breakfast or lunch buffet wherever I go.

However, downtown has very few buffet choices. I seek out certain foods, all of them low in carbs and sugar. Golden Nugget meets those requirements better than Fremont or Main Street Station. I have not gone to Market Street buffet at the California except for the very limited bit of it that comes at dinner. I have read the choices at breakfast and lunch are limited. But who knows what that means? We can't all eat everything. So our preferences give us totally different criterion.

My favorite buffet downtown used to be Main Street Station for choice and value. Generally, I made my main meal on kalua pulled pork mixed with collard greens and topped with crunchy noodles from the Chinese section (these were discontinued)
I also think they have some of the best iced cream and toppings. And fine cinnamon rolls.

However, I can't eat iced cream anymore or rolls, so that benefit is lost to me.
If you want healthy choices, Main Street Station is very poor in those. And if you are vegetarian, it will not give you many choices. When I leaned in that direction, it became one of the worst buffets in Vegas.

Golden Nugget has a good selection of fresh fruit that tastes like fruit. There are some interesting salads. Breakfast is really grand for me because it is a place has smoked salmon, onion, capers. (I do have difficulty getting them to give me a creamed horseradish sauce with those.) No where else downtown has smoked salmon.
Eggs are pretty much the same anywhere.
Value may also depend on where you gamble. The Golden Nugget has to be the worst place downtown to play slots, but it is one of the best to play live poker. $10 off the price of the buffet after an early morning session of live poker (high hand bonus is doubled from 2 AM on ) makes breakfast after poker cost $2.99 on most days and works as a line pass as well.

If ambiance matters, the Golden Nugget can set you by a window looking out. I like that.
Main Street Station has a fine feeling of being in an antique. It is comfortable.
Fremont always feels to me like eating in a cave.
The California is okay. Actually, when I've gone there recently there have been huge lines, so I've skipped the lines and eaten at the counter where we can be usually immediately seated. One day five of us did that when the line was 45 minutes long. Solo the counter is grand because there is some entertainment in watching waitresses and sometimes some conversation. I might pick that buffet because it has a counter and I am traveling solo.

 

I did notice that the Golden Nugget has a Seafood and More buffet. How much seafood is offered?
I assume the "more" is the regular buffet.
