Comparing downtown options

I am booked for 4 nights mid-November. Although I have stayed at the 4 Queens a couple of times, it was a standard room.
What is the difference between two doubles standard and two deluxe? is it worth paying 40 to 50 extra total for?

Could also stay at Fremont or Golden Nugget. Have stayed in both the Carson and Gold Towers at GN. I figure GN pools will be closed by mid-November, but is that the case?

Just booked air today and I am mulling over hotel choices. Some Boyd casinos are not booking into November yet. Fremont will book, but the rooms according to the website are really small. Have stayed several places downtown, but not there. Haven't stayed at the D either.

May not stay downtown at all, but that is our most frequent haunt. Love GN to stay, but play all over downtown.

 

Give The Plaza some love, stays there have always been great and the food options certainly help also.

I was under the impression that the GN pools were open year-round, but whether its warm enough in mid-November to actually enjoy them is another story.

Have you looked at Downtown Grand? Not on Fremont, but only a block away and you hit the D/Fremont/Four Queens. Nice rooms, a small but nice casino, and a couple of good restaurants in Triple George and Pizza Rock right across the street.

 

We were there in December last year and the pool was open and we actually sat in the hot tub a while. IT was during the Santa run so had a bunch of folks in Santa costumes there and it snowed a bit that day as well.

 

There are only two hotels that I would stay at Downtown and they are The Golden Nugget and The Downtown Grand. Oops, or The Golden Gate (the new suites (though tiny) are very nice there. The Golden Nugget pool is open year round (although they close it for weeks at a time in winter for "maintenance").

 

Standard vs Deluxe may just be what floor it is on, like 1-14 is standard, anything above that is deluxe. The higher you go the quieter is should be. GN probably has the best pool option in downtown, but if a pool is your thing, move to the strip. I stay at the d and have a pretty nice stay there. The rooms are fairly standard stuff unless you get a suite, but I don't spend to much time there so as long as its clean Im happy.

 

I stay at 4 Queens often and almost always get a suite with the $20 trick.

 

So what are the suites like at the 4 Queens?

Sipsey, if you stayed at the GN then Fremont may be a disappointment. GN is considered the "premier" hotel downtown. As you mentioned, the rooms at the Fremont are smallish (smaller than the rooms at the 4q) and the bathroom even smaller. However, the rates are probably lower at the Fremont so it all depends if you are willing to spend more for a nicer room or want to save $$ by staying at the Fremont.

Funny because the GN is one of the hotels that I refuse to stay in, mostly because they are more expensive and I don't like the gaming there (snooty dealers). I would rather stay at the boyd hotels or even the EC over the GN but I guess if the GN rates (including their fees) were comparable to the boyd hotels I would give them a try. I did stay at the GN about 20 years ago before they refurbished the rooms. Was all right but IMHO it wasn't worth paying extra for it. The rooms were upgraded and renovated since them but I still won't pay a lot of money for a room (I don't qualify for comps so I have to pay for rooms).

 

The difference in the "Standard" and "Deluxe" is the tower....all standard rooms are in the North tower...and are older, and not updated with newer beds or bedding. Deluxe rooms are in the South tower...have newer beds with the thick matteresses, better bedding, and flatscreen tv's...and have had some renovations. Its worth the few dollars more to go Deluxe.

 

Suites are more than 2 times the size of a regular room....has a king bed, 2 night stands, have 2 couches, bar/desk, Armoire with TV, seperate dressing/makeup vanity, mirrored closet, larger bathroom. 2 yrs ago, I reserved a "deluxe king" checked in....got to room...and it was the petite suite.....DATED, BUT NICE

Have stayed at the Nugget (both Carson & Rush Towers), 4 Queens & the D (pre-reno). Will only stay at the Nugget of those 3--the other 2 were not good.

We visited the Downtown Grand--LOVE this casino. Very NYC chic.

Kudos to the Plaza--DM & I spent a bit of time there a couple weeks ago. Staff was super helpful, allowing us to load all our free play from LVA & ACG coupons, both from Plaza & LVC, as well as DM getting extra as she was a new player there. HAGG looks GREAT--was very impressed! (rooms look nice in photos)

 

We just stayed at GN for first time. Trip report is in the section as GN June 10 to 15. We really enjoyed but did our gaming elsewhere....love the BJ at El Cortez!

 

Got an email offer and it was better than my original booking at GN. So I called and saved about $100 plus acquired some freebies.

Never hurts to ask, I guess! Probably will stay with this, even though the rates at MSS are awfully tempting right now and I would save another 2 Franklins with that.
