    My Trip Report

I really had no intention of doing a TR, but then a few different things came up on the trip, so here goes…

SWA flight at 6:50 AM non-stop to Vegas from Milwaukee. Did you know the airport bars in Milwaukee can’t serve a drink until 6 AM! That is un American, or for sure un Milwaukee!! We did EB and ended up with A44 & 45.

Uneventful flight and we arrived in Vegas at around 8:30 AM. Hotel limo driver was waiting for us at the bottom of the escalator. We arrived at MSS just a little after 9 AM.

Tried to check in, but our suite was still occupied, so we checked the luggage and headed over to the Main Street Bar at Cal to see one of our favorite bartenders, Barb. Nothing to report, up/down on VP for about 2 hours and we headed over to the 777 for lunch.

We tried checking in again and the suite still wasn’t ready. I was double booked at the Downtown Grand, so we headed over there to try and check in. Originally my brother and his wife were going to use the room, but they had to cancel. The only reason I checked in was my wife wanted to use the pool.

The room wasn’t ready there either, so they took my cell number and said they would call, so of course we headed to the bar, Furnace Bar, I think it’s called? We played for maybe a half hour and I got this…

Funny story for those of you familiar with the 4 to a royal anguish. Bartender comes over and looks and my hand and his quote is “oh, it practically gave it to you”. The guy obviously doesn’t play VP because we all know about 4 to royal syndrome and how it infrequently they hit!

Get a call from the front desk that our room is ready soon after. We check in and the clerk tells us to take the escalator up to the 3rd floor and then take the elevator up to 16. We do that and can’t find a room with our number. We finally break down and ask the maid. You have to go back to 3 and take the skybridge to the west building, then take the elevator to 16. Not a big deal, but a little annoying. The room was very nice.

We just checked the room out and left and went back to MSS to try and check in there.

The rest of Friday we both had very good luck at the MSS bartops. I hit 3 of these, but only have one picture. None of them had a kicker, but that’s OK, I don't need W2Gs.

It was an early night since we got up at 3 AM Vegas time for our flight.

Saturday morning my wife wants to go use the pool at DTG but it doesn’t open until 9 AM.

She said the water was freezing even though the overnight temps were in the 80s and btw, Saturday, Vegas tied their high for the day at 104 degrees. A 30 year old record. Just a FYI, DTG on their website says a non-guest can buy pool admittance for $5 and get a free drink at the pool area. Not a bad deal.

When we checked in at DTG they gave us a coupon book and so I paged through it Saturday morning and told my wife I would walk over with her. They had a $10 MP, another for $25 and a $5 slot freeplay. They all had to be redeemed at the Player Services desk.

I took my 2 match plays to a blackjack table and there was one other person there. Yes, it was 6/5 but my intention was to play the MP and leave. I lose the $10 one on the first hand and then the only other person at the table notices my VMB wristband.
He says he was at the high limit slot pull the night before, but I never caught his name or VMB handle. First time anybody has acknowledged the VMB band.

Anyway, he was getting killed and left so I decide to play my $25 MP and I won and I won again and again. I have my $35 investment up to $177. I am standing the entire time because I figured it would be a one time only. New asshole suit comes on and tells me I can’t play standing up, I must sit. Jerk! Fine, I am the only one at the table, don’t have a drink and it’s a $15 minimum table. I cash out, tip the dealer $17 and head to the bar. They never got a chance to win their money back.

Now I’m back at the Furnace Bar. It is a big square bar and there is only one other person in the entire bar. I put $100 in and start to play 10x, quarter, DDB. The female bartender walks by me at least 5 times while doing her morning chores and ignores me. I finally have to ask her for a drink. I tip her and she becomes a “little” more friendly. On my second drink, I comment that they have a good mix of music, but it sure is loud. She tells me many customers have said that.

Shift change around 9 AM ish and a new bartender comes on. I make the same comment to him thinking if enough people complain about the volume, management might turn it down a bit. After my comment, he walks around to the corner of the bar and turns it down. She could have done the same! Really sorry I left her a tip!

OK, back to 10x DDB. Up/down but nothing to brag about. A hand gets dealt and before I have a chance to hold anything, it redeals all 10 hands. I’ve only had two drinks at that point, but I’m thinking maybe??? I hit the deal button? I hit deal again and the same thing happens. It redeals all the hands before I can make a hold selection. I move over one machine and tell the bartender I need a slot attendant.

He calls for something like a guest relations person? A guy comes over, I explain what happened and he hits all the buttons, like if one of them was stuck. Nothing. He asks how much I was playing. I say 10x at $1.25 per hand. Maybe I wasn’t clear enough, but he gives me $3 in cash and says he’ll call a slot tech. Half an hour goes by and a slot tech shows up. I again explain and what does he do? Hits all the buttons, says none are sticking and doesn’t even open up the machine to check the replays. I think they can go back 10 hands and look. “They are fine; these buttons were just replaced last week”. ASSHOLE!

The good news is that while waiting for him to tell me there was nothing wrong, I hit 4 aces with a kicker on the new machine!

My wife finishes her pool session, takes a shower in the DTG room and we are on our way to Chicago Brewing for a Chicago style hotdog. It did have sport peppers, mustard, relish but no poppy seed bun. Just OK. Gambled at the bartops for a couple of hours using my $200 in freeplay and it was already loaded on my card. We didn’t have to check in to claim it.

This was strange. Saturday night while playing at MSS, I get a call on my cell from DTG asking if we are still staying there. I have been quadruple booked at places downtown and never had that happen. Plus, my wife used the room that morning after using the pool. I am confused about this. I told the story at MSS and someone suggested that maybe if the room key isn’t swiped, they notice. But, my wife used her key that morning after pool time??

Also on Saturday night, my wife hit this on machine #13 at Boar’s Head. Her 34th Royal.

Sunday, we do get a little tired of our free food options at DT Boyd, so we went to Hennesy’s to sit out on the patio and watch the crowds go by on Fremont. Food was nothing spectacular, but the people watching was good! From there, we moved across the street to Banger Brewing and their patio. A new favorite pastime for us is to try and guess the weight of the people heading to the outdoor scale at Heart Attack Grill which is right next door. Damn, one guy got on the scale and he was 540#. For you youngsters, that is the pound symbol, not a hashtag! Of course he went in for his free meal since he was over 350#.

While we were sitting on the patio and we were under an umbrella, an employee of Banger comes out and says you’re obviously not locals. We ask why? Because all locals are inside in the AC. The temperature at that time was probably close to 100. But, it’s dry heat, right! It was hot, but with 10% humidity in the shade, not too bad. It was a long winter back here in WI and the heat felt good.

All in all, a profitable trip for us. I use a medium size binder clip as a money clip and I found you can only squeeze 51 folded hundys in there. I had to wrap another 22 in a rubber band. My wife, who only plays quarter VP, came home about $600 ahead. It sure beats the alternative Vegas experience!!!

Our standard trip is always Fri-Tues because of either golf or bowling leagues, but this trip was Fri-Mon and maybe that’s enough. TSA pre-check eliminates a lot of the hassles of flying, so I might rethink our next 3 Vegas trips and just do 3 nights.

    Chris, nice meeting you!

    Thanks for reading.

Anytime a royal is involved you have to post a TR Joe.
Good thing you were double booked or you may not have gotten the royal. Some people don't understand that even though you are dealt four to the royal, there are 47 cards left and only one will make it happen. Congrats to the wife also on her royal. Thanks again for the report and pics.

Awesome hits; congratulations!! I saw the exact same thing happen with a possessed video poker machine at the Sports Bar at Palms but it was handled properly. The slot attendant opened the machine, did something that fixed it and refunded both hands the guy played where it happened.

I was nice meeting you and your lovely bride at the Boar's Head. Talking with your child bride was a delight. Congrats on a great trip.

Great report, Joe! Congrats on the win!

Wouldn't it be nice if Downtown Grand would stop shooting themselves in the foot?

Very successful 3-night trip, Joe .... Congrats on the Royals and the Aces.
The Downtown Grand doesn't seem to be very "customer friendly".

We'll be at MSS for 6 nights in September, and again in November.

The story about the auto draw reminds me of the hour long argument i had with the Monte Carlo floor over a mislabeling of a button that "bet max" instead of "bet one" like it says. They still thought it was correct and didn't change it. They finally gave me my rough loss of $5 to move on since i was too drunk or they were too dense to understand my point, but my argument never was really about the money. I hit aces on nickels later that day as well.

And don't remind me about the 4 to a royal thing, but yep he doesn't get it. 4.25 years and counting now. Next time i get a 4 to a royal, I'm taping it. Hell it worked for BeeeJay!

    Nice trip!

DTG pool looks like a fantastic upgrade over what the Plaza calls a pool. Might have to give it a try if I ever stay downtown again.
