Points two thumbs to chest: this guy.

The windows 10 upgrade icon has taken occupied a space next to my time clock, which is blatant forced advertising for sure, but I'll live with it. Supposedly, it has the speed of windows 8 combined with the familiar interface of windows 7.

And free! A $199 value for Pro! (to people who upgrade within 1 year)

There's no way I'd pay $199, but for $0? I'll buy that for a dollar.

I won't say "excited," but I am looking forward to it. Then again, I looked forward to ME, VISTA, and Win 8! (After more than a little research, I stuck with XP and then Win 7, but feel that 10 may actually be a winner. We'll see.) I'm mostly looking forward to installing 10, as I'll get a "clean" install and a good excuse to get an SSD. Either that or I'll use the new 2 GB HD that's been sitting in the closet the past couple years. There's no way I'll do an update of my present OS, at least on my main machine.

Turtleman, clean install on an SSD, it is "cray amay" (as the kids say).

I went from an old single core AMD 64 with an old HDD on Windows XP, to an i7 with an SSD on Windows 8. It's light years different. I can run Windows Bitlocker for encryption, it boots in like 5 seconds, and anti-virus scans don't eat up 1 hour and slow my system down. Use the HDD for storage.

I have a Crucial MX100, which has weird errors sometimes, but after the latest firmware its rock solid. Because of those shutdown errors, I recommend a Samsung 850 Evo, or the newer Crucials.

donfairplay: I don't have a clue what "cray amay" means, but thanks for the Crucial info. I'm kind of disturbed, however, about "old data" performance slowdowns, particularly with Samsung SSD's. The problem seems to be "physics-related," and Samsung's "fix" is more of a patch than a real solution. In any case, prices have finally gotten to the attractive point and it won't be long before I also go the SSD route.

I'm looking forward to it also. Currently run 7 with no problems but ready for an upgrade.

Will it be any easier than programming Assembly language on a DEC PDP16? That's my yardstick.

I'm pretty content with a C2D "Conroe" chip on Win7...but since it's free...I'll do it.

I am not excited about it. But, I might try it on one of my laptops. But, I will only try it on my seven year desktop if drivers are available for my video card, sound card and printer and scanner.
One thing for sure is, I will not be one of the first people to try it. I will let others test the waters before I jump in. I will wait a few months before I try it.

What reason is there to upgrade if my computer runs good and I'm totally familiar with win 7?

Because it will be faster, easier to use, you'll be more productive, have a better overall experience, etc ... the same hype that's accompanied every operating system from MS-DOS! :)

I got a laptop with an SSD 2 years ago and instantly decided to upgrade all my PCs.

    best thing I ever did.

as far as Windows 10, I'll upgrade.

I've always gotten the latest right away - Vista, 7, 8.

Vista wasn't as bad as people said. I liked 7 a lot better. 8 isn't terrible, but not that great.
