I'm headed to South Point in a couple of weeks, and would love some tips that I can't find on their website. For example, I know about (and am excited about) their movie theater and some of their restaurants, but what else...? What to avoid? Any tips on room selection, etc.

    Thanks, everybody!

Their restaurants are very good. Didn't eat at Michael's, that's too swanky for us but their regular steakhouse was excellent. I can't think of anything to avoid, we liked it there. Have fun!

Try the matzo ball soup at the Del Mar deli. It is delicious. Late night specials at the cafe are great. Also the spa is beautiful, better than most on the strip.

The only thing I didn't like was the 12:30 am comedy show on Friday night. I like dirty jokes as much as anyone, but this was just dirty apparently without jokes. However it's free, so you can check it out and leave after 5 minutes if your experience was as bad as mine.

I agree the Friday night comedy show is pretty bleak. We also didn't enjoy the lunch specials at the oyster bar. Everything else about South Point I love. Primarily Prime Rib is one of the best ~$18 meal restaurants you'll find anywhere. Zenshin is pretty good. Late night specials at Coronado Cafe are good. Del Mar deli sandwiches and hot dogs are very good and huge. Steak & Shake is yummy. The pool is great. Bingo is a lot of fun. Same with bowling. If you enjoy mimosas or bloody marys, take advantage of the $1 specials from 6am-noon at several of the casino bars.

RE: room selection, unless you really don't care about any view whatsoever, request a high room or pay the upgrade for a mid-level room. Some of the lower floors look directly at giant walls or buildings, which gives the room odd lighting and a weird feeling.

I've never really had a problem but some people suggest bringing some type of large clip to be sure you can close your room's blackout curtains completely, because the hotel has giant spotlights aimed up at the rooms from ground level.

Enjoy SP! I love it there.

The oyster bar is way, way overpriced. Good service but there are many better in town at 20% less. The Prime Rib Loft as mentioned is one of the better choices. I do like Michael's but I travel on expenses and don't have to worry about the credit card bill when I get home. Cafe has a decent prime rib but I think they upped the price recently. It's always packed. Good food all over the menu.

Haven't been there in a while but if the Spazmatics are still playing there and you like 80's, 90's Rock, for $10 they're great! Video poker was decent, slot club sucks. I was treated very rudely when I went to change a mailing address of all things a year and a half ago. That's why I haven't been back.

The hot dogs from the cart near the sports book are excellent. And if you want a quiet bar to chill or play VP the one past the race book always has seats open when i have been there.

South Point my favorite place :) Primarily Prime Rib is our favorite, we actually trade our Steakhouse voucher at the hosts office for PPR instead. All of their regular rooms are the same, $10 increments ....3 levels, deluxe you face a wall, mid you get a view of some sort, city view is a high floor unobstructed view. Strip view is not worth it, I prefer the view to the east. If you can swing the upcharge the 1 bedroom suite is great ( we stay in one every trip ). Pool is laid back which some people prefer. Oyster Bar is good except their salad...that was bad. Their clam chowder is fantastic as is their fish sliders and King Crab sandwich. Steak n Shake has great shakes and a good chicken salad. Del Mar Deli, if you stop by there...SHARE. The gift shop has great prices for liquor. If you are at the end of the casino by Steak n Shake you can smell the movie theater popcorn....MIL use to go up there and buy the popcorn and bring it back to her room ;) They do check room keys on busy nights. Do not be surprised to see large groups, families, people dragging big bowling bags, coolers to the elevators. They have special events going on every weekend in their bowling alley or arena. It doesn't feel like the strip, it could actually be plopped down anywhere. Prices are reasonable compared to the strip and our slot budget goes further here. Sign up for their card and use it. Coupons when you check in will get you discounts. It can take months to get on their radar as far as comps are concerned. If you spend a lot gambling and want to go back before you receive anything in the mail, contact their host office. They were giving me suites long before my mailer said I was entitled to one.

Thanks for the tip on the Spazmatics, I'll check that out.

I also was treated rudely when I went to get a player's card. The lady must've been over 200 years old (maybe the same lady?). She was explaining the program and I asked her to repeat something. She practically yelled at me, LOL! I guess it must be hard to repeat something when you are 200 plus years old.......

The lobster grilled cheese at the Oyster bar is awesome. The best desert is at Don Vito's, wild cherry ice cream. Try to get a suite on the 25th floor, very quiet and lots easier to take the elevator down since you start at the top.

You really can't go wrong there no matter which room you get. Even their standard rooms are really nice, bigger than some "suites" I have stayed in (outside Las Vegas). I never pay for an upgrade and last time I got a room on the 2nd or 3rd floor overlooking the pool, which I thought was great because I could see my family from my room. One advantage to a low floor is you are the first off the elevator. I suggest renting a car rather than relying on their shuttle if you don't want to spend a lot of time waiting.

10:30 pm every Saturday except when the NFR in in town. A VIP ticket which get you reserved seating and two free drinks is going to cost you a gargantuan portion of your bankroll. $10. That's United States Dollars. Well drinks or beers but that includes a couple hours of pretty good music.

I've seen them many times at the a the Cedar Street pavilion in Austin. Wednesday night's if the foggy memory is correct. Always a great time. Of course I'm an old white dude.

Oct. will be our 4th stay at the SP. We love it there. Location isn't optimal, but we are willing to sacrifice location for the outstanding customer service and comps.

    South Point: A super casino!
Don Vito's in an excellent Italian restaurant with a great atmosphere and delicious food. Their prices are much better that the fancy Italian restaurants on the Strip.
The Coronado Café is a very good 24/7 restaurant with great breakfasts, prime rib specials, burgers...
I love Primarily Prime Rib. Excellent prime rib in a nice atmosphere.
    Good video poker!

Graveyard specials at the Coronado Café have been mentioned. I'm a big fan of their steak & eggs (as you can see from my avatar!). Over the years, theirs has been the most consistent in quality and value. Highly recommended.

Also, while you're in the Coronado Café, glance around the corner - the equestrian statue of Benny Binion that used to be at 1st St. and Ogden downtown has been moved to South Point. That this couldn't find a home downtown is a sad commentary, IMHO. At least we can thank Michael Gaughan for saving this little piece of Las Vegas history.

A poster mentioned the high prices at the Oyster Bar, which is entirely correct. But, if I'm not mistaken, they do have a separate lunch menu or some specials there that make it affordable.

I didn't see anybody mention the Mexican restaurant (name escapes me) that has/had a great lunch special. I think it was something like $9 with a margarita included. Is it still there?

Whenever we are in town we always make it a point to see the taping of the Dennis Bono Radio Show - they tape it at 2pm every Thursday. He always has a great variety of guests (singers, comedians, bands). The tickets are free (all you need is a player's card to get a free ticket) at the box office. They start handing out tickets the day before (Wednesday) after 12 noon. If you decide to go I highly recommend getting your tickets early - they frequently "sell out" - it is a very popular event for the locals. Only takes an hour but really enjoyable.

    Southpoint!

    Love Southpoint!

Rooms, when we have stayed are clean, pool is good, it a little off the beaten path,
so a little more tamed down, but still fun & enjoyable.

If pouring beer over your head & acting like a Fratboy is your thing,
there is a place for that kind of action.
    /please stay at the Flamingo.

They have a delicious deli, In Del Mar deli, Cheap midnight breakfast options,
    Good movies & Bowling,
& some of the best Video Poker in all of Las Vegas!

Occasionally they have great comics & entertainers,
Our last stay at Southpoint was Comedian Ralphie May & the Smash Brothers!
    Great times!
