I will be in vegas for the first time in September for a week, with a 4k overall BR (small time compared to most of you I've seen on here!). Staying at the luxor, and was hoping for a bit of advice on where to gamble, I'm an amateur!(slots, BJ, roulette) the house edge and percentages go over my head, so it's not too serious. Am I best sticking to my own hotel/casino to build up a few comps and whatnot or spread my wings. I'm hoping to make this a yearly occurrence, so the idea of having discounted/comped rooms to come back to is something I wouldn't say not to!!

Your best bet without any skills is craps. Bet the pass line and take odds on the point. With a minimum of training, you can do better than that at blackjack. Since you have until September, that's what I suggest.

Essentially there are a number of organizations within each player's club (MLife, CET, Boyd, etc.) that pool your points accrued. In addition each casino/hotel tracks your play. Your offers will come both ways but may be better from the casino you play at most. You will need to decide if you like staying at Luxor and if so, play there the most.

Being new I would suggest you concentrate your gambling on one or two type games and learn them inside and out before venturing to Vegas. Of course slots are random in winning terms but some slots pay better in points than others.

Thanks! I've had a look at a craps table and it looks complicated!! I'm sure I can find some sort of idiots guide before September!

Thanks. I know this is a difficult one to answer, but what kind of play is required for comp rooms on your next return?

Craps is a fast paced game and the only game in the casino that pays true odds, but not for all bets. It's also a place only for the thick skinned newbie. Expect to get yelled at by the dealers and other players as you learn. You will probably bet too slowly, incorrectly, throw the dice too short, too long and many other infractions to slow the game down. And yes, you will be the cause of Seven Out many times, even though you never touched the dice. You just looked at them...

I got beat up learning craps years ago at the Orleans. The experience wasn't fun at times but like boot camp, necessary. Part of growing up.

Get a book on craps, understand the principles first. Get some dice, learn the payouts. Stick to the pass line and a couple place bets. Avoid the stick man's prop bets. Never bet the World bet. Know all craps betting systems are crap.

Enjoy the game and good luck!

    Sounds enjoyable! :faint:

I think I may try it when it's a bit quieter to bet my bearings. Maybe by the end of the week, I can be the one blaming the new guy for losing all of my money!!

CET generally hands out comp rooms easier than mlife so you may want to take that into consideration. However, you're staying near all mlife properties. Closest CET property is Planet Hollywood.

Thanks! I nearly booked at PH but was told it was a bit off the strip. Will be making the trip across anyway

PH is on the strip. Not sure where you heard otherwise.

Craps is not a game for beginners. Just the process is complicated.

Maybe I was told it was out of the way, and I took that being as off strip.....or I'm thinking of a different place altogether lol

    1. Get a player's card from every casino you play. If you're betting even $15-$25 per event (pass/hand/spin), you'll get offers from all of them. Some will be better than others.
    2. I wouldn't worry about playing for comps. Explore. Play at many casinos. Try to get downtown to play there too. You will develop a "favorite" - maybe not on this first trip but by your third or fourth one? Yeah - you'll know. THAT'S when you start giving your favorite a majority of your play.
    3. I would learn basic strategy and play blackjack... at the lowest minimum table you find that pays 3:2 for a blackjack.
    4. Your bankroll ($4K for 7 days) is right in line with my level of betting... low roller, but not chump-change either. I typically budget about $800/day. I play mostly $10 2-deck blackjack. Sadly, you won't be able to find that on the strip...but may I suggest Gold Coast? It's quite close to the heart of the strip & they have a free shuttle to/from. And plenty of 3:2 two-deck pitch blackjack with DAS, @ $5 and $10 minimums.
    5. If you play craps, my advice would be to keep it really simple - find a $5 table. Play $5 on the line. When a point is made, take 2x odds behind your line bet, & make a $12 place bet on the 6 & 8 (assuming one of those isn't the point). When 6s & 8s hit, take the $14 wins twice...then press them both on the next two hits, getting them to $24 each, $6 each at a time. When they get to $24, just "same bet" those until the point is hit or a 7 comes. You'll get comfortable with the game very quickly this way, without being bored. Once you're comfortable, you'll play they way you want & you'll love it.

What are my best places (ideally on the strip) that have the lower minimal bets?

Someone else should weigh in on this question as I mostly play downtown these days, but off the top of my head, I'd say Excalibur, Luxor, & TI would allow you to play $5 craps & $10 blackjack at least during the day on weekdays.

My friend once stayed at the Westgate (which was behind PH) and is still convinced to this day that PH is not on the strip. You're not the only one with that misconception.

It was probably the Hard Rock. That's a few blocks off the strip.
