Penn National also purchased Gold Strike in Jean from MGM. Busy over there.

That's great news. Tropicana sort of gets lost in the shuffle as far as South Strip properties. The Tropicana is known all over the world as a Vegas icon. Hopefully they can attract visitors who want to stay on the Strip but with competitive pricing and for people who want to do business with a hotel not affiliated with MGM or Caesars.
DoubleTree will bring business to Tropicana. Unlike SLS, Tropicana is in a great location.
Even though it isn't going to happen till the end of the year, i'm going to stop by there next month. Take pics and get a feeling of what Tropicana could be in the future. Get some new blood on the Wynn-Mandalay Bay corridor with the Tropicana name and the familiar comforts of DoubleTree/Hilton. I know this place well. I have stayed at DoubleTree around the country many times. I have a HiltonHHonors card from my stays in Hawaii.
This could be great for me. Book 2+2+2. First two nights at CET, next two nights at the Trop, and the last two nights again at CET.
I wish them all the luck in the world.

The underlying structure of the hotel is in poor shape. In 2011 and in 2012, both in December, both in the same Partagas (either 3 or 4) meeting room in their convention area the ceiling collapsed due to pipes bursting during my meeting. I have the pictures. I won't stay, play nor do business with them again. Not sure how they came up with that meeting room name anyway...

Catering and bell staff there are great folks by the way.

The problem with major renovations is that they leave the plumbing untouched. I'd like to get a count of the mold spores in Bally's and Flamingo sometime. Constant water issues are difficult to deal with.

I wondered this while I was at the Linq last month. I was hoping they didn't build all of these things around the existing Imperial Palace plumbing.

More importantly, I think, is the fact that Penn has locals-oriented casinos and racetracks all over the country. Much like some people stay at CET properties in Vegas because their local casino is a Caesars, people who spend a lot of time at a Hollywood or Argosy, or one of Penn's racetracks, are likely going to be interested in staying at the Trop (at least, depending on what they wind up doing with the players club programs).

For years this place was rumored to be sold, imploded and rebuilt. I doubt Penn can afford to do that and get no revenue for 2-3 years. I like the fact that the casino is "small" by todays standards. And I like the pool area. The rooms are ok, they have some nice corner suites. As said above I like having options other than CET and MLife. The more competition the better.

I curious as to what - if anything - they will do to blackjack conditions... it would nice to, once again, have a good, low-limit blackjack option on the strip... and what I mean by "good" and "low limit" is:
    two-deck, 3:2, DAS, DAT, H17 or S17, with $5 or $10 minimums... + 6-deck shoes (or CSMs) that are 3:2, S17, DAS, RSA, DAT, LS... @ $5 minimums.

I thought that JETT Gaming had bought the Gold Strike from MGM.

Penn is trying to link their casinos together like CET. I don't know if I don't play enough with them or what but I don't really get how it works with them. They promote the option but they don't really make offers to just anyone. I don't know about Golkd Spike but Penn is the one that owns M Resort.

Actually, that could be good news - I hear that the blackjack at 'M' is quite good.

Is it just me or is the Tropicana still very underrated? We've stayed there 4 times since the renovations and the overall condition of the property is better than Luxor, Excalibur, Monte Carlo, Bally's, Harrah's, Flamingo, Casino Royale, and Treasure Island IMHO. I believe this is a good move because the Trop will no longer be a stand alone property. It will be part of a larger gaming company with its own loyalty program and client base. If they could only make their "nightclub" work or give it another destination which will actually make them money. I wish them the best of luck!

I was in Vegas for March Madness and stayed at MGM. I hadn't been in the Trop for years and decided to walk across the bridge. It sure wasn't like i remembered. Real bright, not too smokey, and was very comfortable gambling there. I've never stayed in the rooms so I have no comment on that but walked around the Casino and grounds and was pleasantly surprised. I'll definitely swing by for some gaming when I'm back in Vegas for Thanksgiving.

Was my main stay for a good 7-8 years. Haven't been there for 15. I remember they played the same song over and over and over.

It's not just you Reel. I enjoy the Casino and very friendly staff. My host is the best. He went above and beyond in making arrangements for my husband's 50th last July with a BBQ right on our terrace and the staffing. The poolside villas are an oasis on the strip. PS I think Biscayne and Bacio are also under-rated; we really enjoy both.

The old pool area was awesome1 Swimming through the rock tunnel. The small jacuzzi's around and the large swim up jacuzzi. It was classy and unique.

Penn has some Hollywood casino's in the Chicago area so I was thinking I should make a visit to the Aurora casino some day to get enrolled in their rewards program. I don't expect major comps, just want to get on their radar for special offers and room discounts. However when I saw this disclaimer on their website it made me wonder if their program was favorable to locals who also visited their Vegas property. The way I read this is that players cannot transfer rewards between local casinos and M Resorts - am I missing something?

    (1) Marquee Comps are not earned and cannot be redeemed at Zia Park Casino Hotel Racetrack. Marquee Comps are not earned at M Resort Spa Casino in Las Vegas. M Resort Points cannot be redeemed at other Marquee Rewards locations.

At any rate Penn is welcome news to the Vegas strip.
