Why are smoking rooms cheaper than non smoking?

And, do they really smell, or can I safely save a few bucks and book smoking?

Probably depends on how sensitive you are. To me, smoking rooms smell awful. Other people, it probably does not bother

They generally are pretty strong-smelling of smoke. A lot of people smoke and there's really just less overhead because they don't have to worry about deodorizing the rooms and whatnot. To me savings isn't worth the smell. Usually non-smoking rooms are smokey enough for me.

Just curious where you are finding prices cheaper? I've never seen that before.

    Nor have I. Very interesting.

While I'm sure there isn't a perfect correlation, I'd guess that high-end joints probably do a better job of deodorizing. Likewise, I'd assume more time and energy is spent on pricier suites than run of the mill rooms.

Looking at Flamingo pricing and smoking rooms seem to be 5 bucks or so cheaper. Nothing dramatic, but every little bit help. OTOH, if the do smell strongly, as StormHawk suggested- it ain't worth the savings!

Definitely not worth $5 per night, imo.

And when did Flamingo start separating smoking/non-smoking? For most CET hotels it's "preferences not guaranteed" so best not to check-in late!

I'm guessing it's becoming a supply and demand thing? As more and more people stop smoking I suppose non smoking rooms are more in demand. Really should be the other way around since non smoking rooms require less maintenance.

I wouldn't stay in a smoking room unless I had no other choice. They smell pretty bad to me. If you're around a smoker a lot or constantly visiting a smoking home you probably wouldn't mind it so much.

That's interesting. Like I said, I've never seen that offered but maybe I just haven't been paying attention.

I'm a smoker and part-time non smoker but I do think Vegas does a great job of deodorizing rooms, even the smoking ones. I'm also pretty tolerant and should mention that the one thing I have noticed on smoking floors is the smell of weed. We stayed at 4 casinos last trip and it happens so regularly that we commented on our last night at Suncoast, that it was odd we hadn't smelled dope yet. Even when we stayed at Encore, you could smell the dope some nights as you walked down the hall. Of the 20 or so casinos we've stayed at over the years, only Suncoast and Southpoint have been dope free. On the strip, MGM, NYNY, Excalibur, Harrahs and Encore have all had the smell seeping out from the rooms at some point during our trip.

I would say that since you are even considering it, you sound pretty tolerant and are not going to be offended by a smoking room unless you can't stand the smell of weed in the hall. The room should be just fine. The weed smell is certainly not overwhelming, nor is it every day but it does stand out far more than the smell of tobacco. And it brings a whole new meaning to asking for a high floor :)

If the price makes a difference to you, I'd say take the risk and rent a smoking room. You'll probably find it just fine. At the very worst, if you don't like the room, you could probably go back to the desk and upgrade if you were really unhappy. From my experience in Vegas, you'll be just fine.

Edit: Just remembered and need to correct, never smelled it at the Golden Gate either.

I do smoke cigars, but those are usually not allowed in rooms.

I agree. Once I had a smoking room and I swear the guy just checked out because everything reeked of cig smoke. No more.

That could be it, there probably is a bigger demand for non smoking rooms so they book faster so the smoking rooms are the only ones left.

Well, I'm not suggesting you break any rules (although I've never actually seen any signs in a smoking room saying you can't smoke cigars) but a few puffs off a cigar will mask any lingering tobacco odor. If people aren't complaining about the little bit of highly noticeable weed smell seeping out of a room, I can't imagine a couple cigar puffs would cause a scene.

I've sat next to cigar smokers at BJ tables and they've never been told to shut it down, nor would I expect they should be asked. It's Vegas and smoking cigars is not illegal. I can always move if I don't like it.

Just the opposite. I don't know the ratio of smoking vs. non smoking rooms, but from what I've experienced, smoking rooms are difficult to get unless you check in reasonably early. I've spent many nights in a non smoking room because it's all the rooms they had available. (Twice I've also been given non smoking rooms and told to go ahead and smoke because they will deodorize it in the morning!) I think many people who go to Vegas are there for the party. They may be non smoker's at home but not in Vegas. That's why I was kinda surprised they would discount smoking rooms.

As the percentage of smokers go down, yeah, you will see smoking rooms go unbooked from time to time. But this isn't the norm and hotels will switch as many rooms to non-smoking as they can without causing an imbalance. But just being in a non-smoking room where a smoker lit up for a few days can be unbearable and even when they deodorize, the smell can come back up. Imagine a room where people are smoking all the time. The smoke will be in all the fabric from the curtains to the carpet. If you have any sensitivity to smoke, it would be problematic.

We've found that a smoking room is getting harder to find at higher end places (boo, Aria for going 100% non smoking). At Bellagio the front desk was snotty about giving us a smoking room with a fountain view, insisting that all the view rooms were non smoking which was just a straight lie.

All of the rooms at the Flamingo are listed as smoking or non smoking other than the suites. https://www.caesars.com/flamingo-las-vegas/hotel

MGM tried charging more for a guaranteed non-smoking room a while back, but it didn't fly.

If you are not logged into your TR account, CET charges MORE for a smoking room than non-smoking or "no preference"

At least they were considerate enough to book a smoking room. It is about 50/50 we smell weed in the hall on a non smoking floor. Probably 80/20 next week since we'll be staying at linq and luxor.

In a St. Louis casino of all places, we had to switch non-smoking rooms once because it smelled like weed trying to be covered up with pine sol (so we knew the room was clean I guess...lol). I really hope the hotel charged those assholes that stayed before us.
