So Mrs. Yall requested some kind of high-end purse if I hit it big (assuming that I do hit it big AND I admit to it! :wink2: )

A few years ago I snagged her a Rebecca Minkoff from one of the shops in the Cosmo. I did it on a whim, and it seemed like a decent price given the quality and popularity of that particular designer. But I can't help but feel that being a completely uneducated/uninformed buyer that I could have done better. For all I know I bought a Mexican Fender Squire at an American Fender Stratocaster price.

With that being said, should I decide to go the purse route again, what should I be looking for? Any "hot" brands that can be had at a reasonable price? Am I better off finding something on Amazon (I'm making the assumption that most of these shops in the casinos get away with a fair amount of markup)? Any places to target or avoid?

All thoughts welcome (even the snarky ones :Þ ). Thanks in advance to those who respond!

You can't find those brands on Amazon.

But you can find all of them in Chinatown!

You need to be more specific about what she considers a high end brand and what your budget is.

Some people would say Kate Spade was high end and for others they're talking about LV or a Kelly bag.

The prices are the same in the casino stores or any other mall.

Louis Vuitton is hot now. They start at about $1100 and go up from there. The LV store at Crystals is very nice. Michael Kors is hot in a more moderate price point.

LV bags are price fixed and I think most of the other high-end bags are also. The price is the same everywhere and they never go on sale. Real stores don't sell counterfeits.

Believe it or not, a few of them can be found on amazon (and as such Kelly was IMMEDIATELY removed from the running)...

I'm thinking somewhere in the $500-$1000 range, but that would be dependent on how much I win/lose. Ideally, let's say I win $1000.00. I wouldn't have an issue blowing all of that on a purse for her. I've already treated myself to a bunch of new toys this year, and not to mention a trip to Vegas. She deserves something nice (even though I think it's a preposterous way to spend money for a leather sack).

So regarding Chinatown; Very interested in that if for no other reason than to visit Chinatown and get some legit dim-sum! Safe to assume they are knock-offs? To the untrained eye how good do they look?

This is not true. I've been with my wife to these shops often and all over the place, including Vegas. I remember specifically at Crystals her looking at bags which were on sale. They don't advertise them but the salespeople will tell you. They are listed in a catalog. I remember clearly because there was some bag she liked, at Gucci I think, that was like 3k which they were selling for around half that price and it was one of the few times I've ever told her to go ahead and buy it. Normally I tell her its a dumb waste of money and she tells me so is gambling. Then I have no good retort.

I don't really know what's hot right now. Maybe Michael Kors? I just tend to gravitate to Coach. I love Louis Vuitton but I can't afford it. I don't know that the company stores in casinos mark up any higher than their counterparts so I wouldn't worry about that. But sometimes on a good day, you can score a deal at a department store like Macy's. They have more pressure to turn their inventory over and If they can't return it they will mark stuff down. And if your wife wouldn't mind, you can always try the outlet store route.

For a price point of $500-1000 I'd suggest going to a higher end Department store like Nordstrom. They will carry several lines of designer bags and the clerks can assist you in narrowing down the choices!

How about an evening bag or a clutch from Prada or Bottega Veneta? I love the look of those two and they'll be unique, not everyone will be walking around with one unlike LV or MK. Or for something really flashy, and if she likes skulls, check out Alexander McQueen.

On my former forum, a lady reported that she, ahem, "pleasured" a gentleman to get a Gucci bag.

I would go with a brand that is actually in the purse business, like LV, Coach, Gucci, etc. A lot of these "brands" like Michael Kors just slap their name on a generic purse. They are not really in the purse business, they are in the clothing business and just need a purse to complement their line so they find a purse they like and slap their name on it.

yeah honestly if I were your wife and I asked for a high end purse and you brought home Michael Kors from Macy's, I'd be sorely disappointed.

Coach, Kate Spade, Tory Burch, etc are kind of mid-range that some consider high end and some consider normal purses. those are basically the only purses my wife uses and she buys them all the time, so it wouldn't be special for me to bring one home for her.

LV used to be high-end but I swear everywhere I go these days I see everyone from high school kids to grannies toting them around. so I think they're getting oversaturated to the point of not being exclusive anymore.

the truly high end purses are the ones you can't find in Nordstrom, Bloomingdale's, Macy's etc.

    Versace, Gucci, Chanel, Hermes, etc.

Ha, an ex-gf of mine used to love everything Alexander McQueen. She had all these little clutches with that skull latch that cost 3-5k or whatever and were so utterly useless they couldn't even hold her phone. Total waste.

There are women who donate it for free so it seems like this lady got a good return on her donation

As far as purses, I don't care for expensive ones, but if my significant other were to buy me one, I wouldn't want something gaudy with the brand or monogram plastered all over it.

The last one I got her fit that bill, in that it was understated from a branding perspective and I think she liked that.

Agreed, little to no branding is very important.

This. For mid-range brands, I do like some things by Furla, Longchamp (only the leather ones) but I don't own either.

For a bit more money maybe Ferragamo. And I steer clear of anything with too much hardware.
