That looks like a list of places I love to visit. Except Rome.

I just took a poll of everyone sitting in my chair right now and 100% of respondents considered Yahoo to be the most overrated internet site.

People that don't gamble mostly hate Vegas because as far as they are concerned, you only go to gamble. Can't tell you how many people like that I've talked to. I'm surprised it's not higher.

The problem with this poll is that it is missing denominators. So 28% said Vegas is overrated, but how many have been to those other places? Assuming that poll was taken in the US, the list seems to have negative correlation with cost of travel.

So 18% were not really that impressed with New York City.

Are these the people you would trust with vacation tips?

Yep, lots of things go into this:

Probably a survey of people in the US. That's why the three highest are all in the US. Not many people have been to Paris or Rome, let alone Dubai, Bora Bora, etc.

The gambling thing is also very true. For some people, they think that's all Vegas has to offer.

There was also a comment on the article along the lines of how some people "expect to have their vacation fun happen to them". They book a trip, do no research, have no plans, then get to said destination and expect the fun/pleasure to come up and hit them in the face. If you book the cheapest accommodations available, then show up expecting to get a penthouse suite because you've seen all these travel channel shows, you'll be sorely disappointed. Moreso when you're not willing to get out and explore the different resorts, sights, shows, restaurants, etc. There's plenty to see and do in Vegas, but many aren't outgoing enough to find it/do it.

I'm sure there is also a good chunk of people who went to Vegas with little to no gambling experience or knowledge, thought they were going to go big and blew more money than they thought because they thought they were going to hit a big score, and that leaves a sour taste in their mouth.

I've always said that Vegas is a unique town because there is something for everyone and a million different ways to "do" Vegas. I know that many people don't LOVE Vegas, but the ones who have been and hated it, didn't do it right. My BIL doesn't like to gamble and hates Vegas because of it. He loves to go to warm places though and lounge around the pool and have cocktails. Of course the only time he was in Vegas he stayed at Harrah's of all places with a bunch of guys who gambled the whole time. Had he stayed at MB, he probably would have had a blast.

That's not that surprising of a number. If you don't really like gambling or clubs......

If you don't have status w the casino you wait a long time to check in.

The cheap room prices lead you to believe Vegas isn't an expensive town. Unless your eating at McDonalds or Earl of Sandwich every meal it is expensive.

Unless your at a high end property your getting harassed for a time share, sometimes every time yo go to your elevator. And if you sign up for a timeshare then your def not liking your vacation.

You walk out of your hotel and you see all the dirty Olafs and cheap transformer characters. Walkways blocked with people standing around as a guy spends 5 minutes hyping his buddy jumping over 2 people.

There are some warts on this great town. If you don't enjoy some of the things its the only city that can offer, then I can see how you won't like your trip.

Some people will just never understand, but that is ok, it may help keep the crowds away.

    Overrated based on what?

If you think NYC is "overrated," you really aren't much of a traveller

Even if you removed gambling from the equation altogether, you still have large, polished and well appointed accommodations (as well as inexpensive ones), an active night life, premier spa and relaxation services, wonderful pools and some with massive pool parties weekly, and then you have the local sites from Hoover Dam to Valley of Fire to Grand Canyon to Red Rock Canyon and of course Lake Mead. Let's also not forget the Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

    But NYC is "overrated?"
    These people are morons.

I would have picked Canton, OH.

Everywhere I turn people talk about how beautiful and how much fun Canton is and how everyone has to go there.

So I finally went and it was just ok.

In fairness, all the people who voted for NYC as over-rated were the same people who stood outside Rockefeller Plaza for 5 hours to get on NBC's Today show for about one second.

But you'd think after eating lunch in the heart of Times Square at the Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. and experiencing the best of what our fair city has to offer they would view us more positively.

Maybe hitting up Sbarro's for a real NY slice will change their minds...

Kickin, you should have asked a local where the happening places are in Canton.

Any list of disappointing places that does not include Gatlinburg, Tennessee is bogus.
