I've noticed a lot of this thread is about upfront and back-end comps, and players club comps (tier perks, points, tier credits, cashback, freeplay, etc). But I was wondering if you can still get the old-school comps from the pit in Vegas, especially at the nicer places on The Strip?

You know, playing at the table for a couple hours and asking the pit boss for a buffet/cafe comp, or a really nice dinner with wine if you're playing big enough. I've also heard of asking for fight/show ticket comps, spa passes, club comps, etc, from the pit. But a lot of the references I find to this online and in books are old (10+ years) so not sure if it happens anymore.

With the modern players clubs on The Strip do they still give out these kinds of comps? Anybody have recent experience with this on The Strip? Is there an advantage to asking the pit for food comps (or other comps) VS charging to your room and hoping to get it comped off the back-end?

Not recently. i think the last time i got a comp from a pit critter was about 10 years ago.
was playing blackjack at the mirage betting 25 and up... probably averaged $65-75 a hand for 5 hours.
Critter comes over and hands me his card. Gary Nolan from the Big Red Machine....so we
talked about the '75 world series, etc. and i asked him for a dinner comp.
he gave me dinner for 2 at the tappenaki place(Mikado?).
any time i ask at whatever CET property i am staying they always say, charge it to the room and we'll
i think you have to be a pretty big, meaning purple and up to get anything at the pit.

I hear people asking a floor person for a comp. They'll tell them to use their reward credits. If the player has been playing big enough with time put in, they'll call a host. The host will make the decision to issue a comp or not.

    ***this is at CET.

We talked to a pit boss, who was recently promoted to that position, and she told us that pit bosses are not able to give out comps.

Is this a Vegas only thing? I have gotten comps without touching my points at non vegas casinos. In fact the when my buddies and I checked out of Pai Gow $10-20 avg for maybe 1.5-2 hrs, a month ago at the Ameristar by me. The Pit came over and asked if he could do anything for us. My friend did not know what this meant, they thought he was being nice. I said I'd like a cigar, he asked what they cost, I said between $10 and $15, he took my card, put $15 on it.

I was at MB a couple of years ago playing craps. The pitboss got me 2 packs of cigarettes and asked me if I was hungry. I declined the meal. That's my only experience with this sort of comp. I know that it wasn't charged to the room as the girl asked and he said he would take care of it.

The only places that I've seen do this lately (In Vegas) was at Boyd properties; where asking the Pit for a "comp slip" is the only way to get comps from table play.

They specifically designed RCs and ECs to avoid you having to talk to a pit boss.

Yeah I get comps at my local casino like this too, but they don't have the sophisticated Express Comp/Resort Comp type system that they have in Vegas. Was wondering if in Vegas it would be easier getting some good comps from the pit rather than hoping and praying at the end of my stay or guessing at how many points I have.

The Ameristar does, just give them your card, they take the points off. Seems like this may fall under the "it doesn't hurt to ask column"

I've received discretionary comps from the pit at Wynncore, just buffet passes but it was something. I think most places are trying to do away with them because its easier to quantify comps they offer based on how valuable that customer is to them.

I've never asked myself, but I've been there when others at the table have asked. The answer's just about always been a glance at the computer to see if they're using a card, followed by "you have enough points" or "you can take a little off your bill with your points". One player asked for cigarettes, and the answer was "if you had a card I'd get them for you, but you don't". Of course, this guy insisted that the CSM was linked to the eye in the sky and were making him get bad cards. So that tells you that the boss could have been just trying to piss him off. Plus we were at a cheap table anyway.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking, but thought maybe it wasn't true. I love the old school idea of getting friendly with the pit to get more comps as described in the book Comp City. But I guess those days are gone?

Well, downtown (anyway), table comps from the pit still come - although, they're not as easy as they used to be.

A few years ago, betting $10 blackjack for a few hours was enough to score a meal comp for two... except at the Nugget...they've pretty much always been $25+ to get table comps.

We're small stakes bettors, play mostly at Boyd properties; and thank goodness, we're still comped meals by the pit critters without having to use our points. Very seldom have we been turned down for meals; and the few times we have been denied (always by someone who doesn't know us), we've moved to another pit and gotten fed! Hell, we usually don't even have to ask.

I also have some success downtown at the boyd casinos. After a long crap session I will ask the pit boss if I qualify for a comp. I usually only ask if I was at the table for an hour or more or if I was making big bets (which meant that the table was warm to hot - which is the only time I'm making more than $5 bets). They usually ask how much I want, if I want it for myself or for 2 and where I want it at. At the beginning of this month I was there for 5 days and got 2 meal comps, one at the Cal and the other at fremont. I don't know, MSS I have a harder time earning comps although if it was a hot table I would have an easier time asking for a comp meal.

They never used my points, they just checked on my play for the session to determine my comp. Hope it doesn't go away because I usually play at Boyd properties. I didn't realize that it was tougher on the strip but then with $10 minimum tables I usually don't play on the strip.

I have gotten comps from the pit folks at Casino Royale. They check the computer and do a slip for the comp. We usually have enough for an Outback comp each trip....not great, but it is a free meal!!
