    Trips to Las Vegas:

    My Trip Report

My wife and I were in Las Vegas from March 16-20, 2015. It was not our goal to be there for St. Patrick’s Day or the start of the NCAA tournament, it was just that was when we could get relatively cheap flights and a comped room for 4 nights.

We flew Allegiant Air out of Great Falls, Montana. It was a 2 hour direct flight and we paid $150.00 per person for round trip air, including all taxes and fees. My wife received her MLife Spring offer that contained a few different options. We went with 4 free nights in a parlor suite at the Excalibur. We could have had 4 nights at the Luxor or 3 nights at NYNY or the Monte Carlo, or 2 nights free at the nicer places, but we wanted to try the suite at the Excalibur and have all four nights comped.

As you can see, we are low rollers who try and do Vegas at a reasonably low cost. That doesn’t mean we won’t splurge on something we want, like seeing Phantom of the Opera 3 times, including twice in the front row, but it has to be a big want before we will put out (huh huh)a large amount of money.

For example, this trip was for 4 nights. We brought with us $900 in cash. That was for gambling, transportation, tips, small meals and other incidentals. Any show tickets, large bar tabs or more expensive meals would be put on a credit card.

The cash we bring with us we are ok with losing, at least it theory (more on that later), and it would have to be something really outstanding for us to get more money if we went through our bankroll. Maybe that’s discipline, or maybe it is just being cheap, but doing it this way allows us to take 2 trips to Vegas each year and sometimes we have been able to squeeze in a third.

The travel to Vegas was close to perfect. We were supposed to leave Great Falls at 12:30pm on 3/16/15, arriving in Las Vegas at 1:35pm. The flight was delayed about 15 minutes in arriving in Great Falls so that put us a little late into Vegas, but the flight was just fine so that little delay was no big deal. When we arrived in Vegas and went to the taxi line there was no one there! We walked right up to the person who told us to go to space #1 and by the time we got there the cab pulled up and we were on our way to the Excalibur.

I normally tell the cab driver our destination and I add a request to not take the tunnel. But this time when we were asked my wife told him the Excalibur and made no mention of the tunnel. I thought of adding that part but decided that since we were going to the Excalibur, which is pretty much a straight shot from the airport, I didn’t imagine that he would try to take the tunnel. While I was a little worried, he did the right thing and went directly to the Excalibur.

We got to the Excalibur around 2pm and I knew that our room might not be ready until 4pm. We had a comped Parlor Suite and we were told that none were available at that time. We were fine with dropping off our bags for a while but then the nice lady said that they had a suite in tower 2 (which is apparently a slight upgrade from tower 1) that was almost completed and we could have that one sooner than the room we were supposed to get.

We said that sounded great and she asked us to wait while she checked with housekeeping. She was gone for about 10 minutes and came back and apologized and said the room was not ready yet and she asked us to come back around 4pm. We were fine with that and never once complained as we expected the room might not be ready. But then she asked if we would like 2 free buffets to make up for the inconvenience? We said that would be very nice but asked if they had to be used right now because we had lunch a few hours ago and weren’t hungry. She then asked if we would prefer a $75.00 credit to the Camelot Steakhouse. We said yes and thanked her for her help. We left and stowed our bags and were ready to some fun!

Since we had about an hour and a half to kill we decided to go to Dick’s Last Resort and have the first drink of our vacation.

    IMG_20150316_145856_rewind.1.jpg

We have been to Dick’s a few other times. The first time was at night and it was a blast! The next two times were during the day and it was borderline boring to maybe crossing over into just fine. Since this was in the afternoon I was not expecting a rowdy time and I was correct. During the day they seem to phone it in and not put any real effort into customer interaction.

In case you have never been to Dick’s Last Resort inside the Excalibur, they pride themselves on being slightly rowdy, maybe a little rude, and they have fun with the customers and make fun of them a little. When it works it has been great, like our first visit, but this all I heard was the bartenders dropping f bombs into most sentences. I guess that is shocking, but not very creative and certainly not fun.

We went back to the check in desk at 4pm and were given the key to our room and our dining credit. We were given a room on the 28th floor in tower 2. The tower two elevator only has buttons for the 28th floor so unless there is another way to get to the higher floor, I think we were close to the top. The room was very nice. It had two rooms, two bathrooms, a double sink, a soaking tub, shower, and 2 large TVs.

    Here are some pictures:

    IMG_20150316_173836_rewind.1.jpg

We enjoyed the second bathroom and the double sink, but we never really used the other room. We never sat in the sofa or used the table and chairs and never turned on the TV. We pretty much just use the room to hold our stuff, sleep, sleep, and then get ready.

After unpacking we left the room and hit the strip. We played and drank at the Excalibur, NYNY, Monte Carlo and the Cosmo. We were having a great time. Is there any better feeling than that first day in Vegas? We were having a blast just being there and playing some machines that we have not been able to play since our last trip 8 months ago.

Let me tell you a little about our gambling habits. We play 50% poker machines, 30% slots and the other 20% would be roulette and blackjack, either on tables or the machines. We like to play the tables during the day when it is cheaper and less crowded.

We normally play double bonus or double double bonus poker, at 25 cents per credit and always at max credits of 5. Slot machines are normally the Hangover or Ghostbusters, usually at max credits per spin of around $2.50 or $3.00. We tend to not play the Hangover at CET properties as they still have the max credit set at six bucks per spin.

We hit all of our favorite machines on Monday as we played and drank our way down the strip to the Flamingo where we had dinner at Carlos and Charlie’s. My wife said the Mexican food there was very good. I had a burger and that was fine, but I am afraid I am no help when it comes to the quality of the Mexican food.

We then worked our way back to the Excalibur and played some more until we went to bed around 2am. It was a wonderful first day in Vegas!

One of the things I do in Vegas is count our money before we leave the hotel room each morning. That gives me an idea of how we are doing financially and if we need to make any adjustments. I was not very happy Tuesday morning when I counted our money and discovered that we were down to 500 bucks. Since we left with $900 that meant that we lost almost half of our money on the first night! I can’t tell you exactly how we did that since I don’t recall any big losses. While I know we had fun, it still stings to realize that you spent almost half of your money on the first night.

Tuesday was St. Patrick’s Day and I was not sure what to expect as this was the first time we were in Vegas on this day. There were a lot of people wearing green!

We played at the Tropicana and Hooters where we had lunch. Then we did some shopping at the Miracle Mile mall and went down to the LINQ area so we could be close to O’Shea’s as we knew they would be doing something big for St. Patrick’s Day. They had a parade and threw out beads and t shirts to the crowd. We followed along and took some pictures.

    IMG_20150317_180617_rewind.1.jpg

    IMG_20150317_181328_rewind.1.jpg

It was fun, but when we tried to go into O’Shea’s we were disappointed to see how crowded it was in there. I expected it to be crowded, but not like that!

We made our way down to the Shoppe’s at Mandalay Bay and had Slice of Vegas pizza for dinner. Gramaldi’s is our favorite pizza in Vegas but we wanted to try someone different and compare the two. Well, we still like Gramaldi’s the best.

After dinner we planned on going to Ri Ra Irish pub to see what they had going on for St. Patrick’s Day but they had a long line just to get in. We walked back to Excalibur and gambled some more until we went to bed.

After the butt kicking we took on Monday, I had slowed down my betting on Tuesday. I usually play max credits on slot machines but on Tuesday I was more of a dollar a spin kinda guy. That was good to slow down the loses while still playing and having fun, but it sure sucks to get a nice bonus only to realize that it would have been 3 or 4 times as much if playing max credits.

I lost on Ghostbusters just about every time I played, both on Monday and Tuesday. It got so bad that by Tuesday afternoon I refused to play that machine anymore and that is one of my favorites.

My wife and I tried the new Hangover Pretty Awesome slot machine but even after playing it at 3 different places we were not able to get even one shot at a bonus. After Tuesday we did not try this new version again, we just stuck with the original, which we find a lot of fun.

When we play video poker we play quarters and always max credits of 5. This trip we played mostly double bonus or double double bonus, but neither one of us ever got 4 aces, or any other high paying quad. My wife got a straight flush two times and we both had a regular four of a kind, but that’s it. By Thursday I was playing Jacks or Better as I had given up on the higher risk/reward bonus games.

On Wednesday morning I counted our money again and discovered that we had $400 left. That means we spent $100 on Tuesday. Since that includes breakfast, tips and other small expenses, I will count that as a win or at least breaking even. I’ll take it! I think we did ok playing video poker, maybe even up a little, but the slots were still kicking our butts.

We left the room Wednesday morning and decided to take the shuttle over to the Rio, Gold Coast, and the Palms. We took the monorail down to Bally’s and took the shuttle over to the Rio. Oh yeah, that reminds me, the Excalibur is really a long way from just about everything!

Most of our better offers for the past few years have come from CET, so we stayed at Bally’s, Flamingo and Harrah’s most of the time. While we have stayed at Excalibur before, it was a long time ago and before we got used to the center strip area. We ended up in this area every day so we spend a lot of time traveling back and forth.

We played at a bunch of different casinos that day, including Bally’s, the RIO, the Palms and the Gold Coast, and in each of them my wife asked me if I wanted to play Ghostbusters and each time I replied, “Ghostbusters can suck it.” I knew I lost at that game the few times I played on Tuesday, so that must mean that I lost at it a lot on Monday. But being so caught up in the excitement and fun of the first day in Vegas seemed to mask the complete whoopin’ I was getting at the slot machines.

After being dropped off at the Rio, we played in there for a while and then walked over to the Gold Coast. After winning some money playing blackjack we walked over to the Palms to play and use our match play. Then we walked back to the Gold Coast where we caught the shuttle to Caesars. We could have walked back to the Rio and taken the shuttle to Harrah’s or Bally’s, but we wanted to see where the Gold Coast shuttle takes you. In the past it dropped you off at Bill’s and later at Bally’s, but now they say it is at the Forum Shoppes, and I was curious where that would be.

The driver took a back entrance into Caesar’s and in a parking lot is a sign on the building that reads Forum Shoppes. We were dropped off there and went inside and took an escalator up. When we got to the top we were inside Caesar’s Palace and off to the right it said it was the entrance to the Forum Shoppes. Maybe it was only because it was my first time and I was not familiar with my surroundings, but I sure liked it a lot better when they dropped you off at Bally’s.

I buy a few copies of the American Casino Guide each year, mostly for the match play coupons. My wife and I enjoyed taking the shuttle to the Gold Coast and Orleans, and walking from the Gold Coast to the Palms to use our match plays. But after doing this for the past 5 years, this trip I realized that I don’t want to take the time and effort to make it to those places just for a $10 match play. It was good for a while but I think I have I have lost interest in making that trip again.

After finding our way out of Caesar’s we crossed the street and went to the Flamingo to play at Bugsy's bar and walk around outside.

    IMG_20150317_181655_rewind.jpg

    IMG_20150317_181721_rewind.jpg

Then we went to the Cromwell to play some video poker. I really like that video poker bar. The bartenders were terrific and the bar looks great. We stayed there for an hour or two before making our way back to the Excalibur for our dinner reservation at the Camelot Steakhouse, using our $75.00 credit.

Dinner was fine and I would have no problem eating there again, however, we both liked Strip House, Gallagher’s and Strip Steak much more than the Camelot Steakhouse.

After dinner we played video poker at the Excalibur and then walked over to NYNY. I think we did pretty well, and I was hopeful that we had our first winning day of the trip.

When we woke up on Thursday morning, our last day in Vegas, I counted our money again and discovered that we had about $300 left.

Once again that means that we lost about $100 the day before, and that brought us back to budget. After 3 days we were down about $600, and since we plan on spending $200 a day, we were within our acceptable range.

My wife asked me how we were doing and she seemed shocked that we were down $600. We could not remember any particular time where we put $100 in a machine and then walked away with nothing. But after 3 days of losses, we realized what we were doing.

We would sit down at a slot machine and put in $100 each. If either one of us got down to $60 or so, we would cash out and go play something else. We would put that ticket into the machine and if one of us got down to $30 or so we would stop and switch machines again. But we would keep doing that until we had lost the original $100.

But with all of our machine jumping, it never hit us that we were losing so much. We became aware of this on Tuesday or Wednesday, but we were completely oblivious to this on Monday and that explains the big lose on our first day.

Thursday morning we went to the Monte Carlo to get our free buffet from MyVegas placed on our player’s club cards. Then we walked down to Aria to get our free MyVegas tickets to Zarkana. We then rode their tram down to the Bellagio. While there we went to a video poker bar and I checked the machines and noticed they had a .25 denomination. We sat down and the bartender took our order. We each placed $100 in the poker machine and when we hit the button for the poker games, the option to play at .25 disappeared. It turns out that is only for Keno.

Since most places want max credits for a drink, and we had already ordered drinks, I thought we were going to have to choose between paying for the drinks or playing at 5 bucks per hand. The bartender came over and gave us our drinks and said that we had to play at least 2 credits per hand. We were okay with that and played poker and enjoyed our drink.

Maybe 20 minutes later we each lost $50 so we cashed out and found a Hangover machine. We put our fiddy bucks in there and both lost. Since we had each lost $100 in a half hour or so, we were down to having $200 left for the trip and it was not even noon! I was getting in a bad mood, and like I said earlier, even though I go there with the knowledge that I may lose all of the money I bring with me, and I think I am ok with that, when it happens it really sucks!

We left the Hangover machine as complete losers and started looking for the closest exit so we could walk down to the Fashion Show mall. Before we could find an exit, my wife noticed the Deal or No Deal slot machine, one of her favorites. Now, I hate this game. I don’t like to play it and I never win, but since my wife plays things I like, every once in a while I have to man up and play the game she picks.

We each put $40 in this game and tried to rack up suitcases so we would make the bonus round and hopefully get enough so that our prize would multiply. Well, at 3 bucks a spin (at least I think that’s what it was) while I got some suitcases, I didn’t win anything so I burned through my forty bucks. I had enough suitcases to make the bonus round, and was 4 away from doubling my multiplier, so I put another 20 bucks in the machine. That means we had $100 invested in this game that I hate, leaving us with only $100. I was not happy.

We ended up cashing out with about $70, so we were back to $170, but I must have mentioned how much I hate that game a little too often as my wife pointed out how she plays things I like. But when I told her that at one point we were down to having only $100 left she seemed to understand my frustration. The Deal or No Deal slot machine always gets more of my money as it seems I am always close to the next multiplier as time is running out. I don’t enjoy playing it and it makes me feel tense and manipulated, and I get enough of that at work.

We left there and went to the Fashion Show Mall. We shopped a bit and had lunch at Gramaldi’s.
We then ended up back at the Cromwell at the video poker bar with the extremely nice bartenders. We played there for a few hours, either winning a little or at least breaking even. We met some nice people and had a great time.

By now things were getting more crowded as the first full day of the basketball tournament was going on. Sportsbooks were crowded and just about any TV with a basketball game on had a crowd.

We walked over to Bally’s and played some more poker at Sully’s bar, one of our favorite spots. The bartenders are great and is just feels like a nice place to spend some time. This is where my wife got her second straight flush of the trip.

We worked our way back to the Monte Carlo for the dinner buffet. It was ok, but I didn’t think it was any better than a buffet I can get at home. I was glad that it didn’t cost me anything except some MyVegas points.

After dinner we went to the Aria for the 9:30 Zarkana show. We were a little early so we played some slot machines. I played Willy Wonka for the first time, at one dollar per spin. After 3 or 4 spins I hit the button and the Oompa Loompas came out and dropped what I think was 4 wild cards. I ended up with a bonus of close to $90. While that was awesome for a one dollar spin, I was kicking myself for not betting max credits. But with the way I was going on slot machines this trip I didn’t want to risk blowing a good chunk of our remaining money.

The Zarkana show was, in my opinion, pretty darn boring.

    IMG_20150319_213135_rewind.jpg

My wife seemed to like it, but it almost put me to sleep. I suppose the constant drinking may have played a part.

After the show we went back to our room and went to bed as our flight was leaving at 8:30am on Friday so we knew we had to be up around 6am.

We came home with almost $200, so after that first ugly day we really did just fine. We gambled a lot, had a lot of fun and met some nice people. We learned that we are center of the strip kind of people and will try and stick to that part of the strip from now on.

Just some random thoughts from this trip. I learned that I have outgrown the desire to spend an hour walking to a shuttle and then riding to the Orleans just to play a $10 match play.

I don’t like the new Hangover Pretty Awesome slot machine, only because I didn’t win. It’s childish, I know, but damn!

I don’t like to play the new Ghostbusters machine with the 3 wheels on top. I like the older version, even though that totally killed me this trip. But I will play it again during my next trip.

Since we were staying at the Excalibur and like being in the center of the strip, we ended up purchasing a buy one get one free 3 day monorail pass from MyVegas. That helped a little I suppose, but the walk from the monorail station in the back of MGM Grand to the Excalibur seems almost as far. I got tired of making that trek every day.

I put twenty bucks down on Notre Dame to win the men’s championship, at 25-1 odds. As I write this they have made it to the sweet sixteen. If they can pull of a miracle that will make me just about even for this trip.

I am already looking forward to our next trip, which I hope will be this summer. Since Bally’s has our favorite pool, I think that will be our first choice, but we are open to other possibilities.

    Thanks for reading.

    Go Irish!

Good report! And nice score on the steakhouse credit!

Do you play the bartops at Excal though? I've yet to hear of a decent paytable there... :( I never got around to check myself though. I really need to squeeze in some "Crazy Taxi" in the "Fun Dungeon"! :evillaugh

Thanks for the report. The soaking tub looks great, I may have to consider Excalibur soon. I'm interested in doing a South Strip trip sometime.

So glad to see the Flamingo still has a garden area! Looking through my old photos, I saw some pics of it and thought for sure it would be gone by now!

Thanks for the report. It's great to see a low rolling report and I applaud you for your financial discipline after that first day. It's a change of pace from many reports here.

Nice report that I can relate to. When I read the reports about people losing $1000 or more at a table in a single session and being down $5000 halfway through the vacation, I just can't relate. (Off topic but is it my imagination, or do these reports always have an "I won it all back" ending?) My wife and I usually take about $900 each for our three days. It keeps us playing the whole time, but at lower limits. We also like to go out twice a year. We are pretty much dollar a spin people. I do have a question...with $900 total, how can you make it last playing the $3 max bet? You must have pretty good luck on occasion. I just don't have the luck I guess. I can put $100 in a $1 machine and lose 20 straight times before I quit....and you're right....those $40 and $60 hits add up quickly!

The suite at Excalibur didn't look bad. I know what you mean about location though....whenever I stay at Tropicana I do so much walking as I always like to hit mid strip at some point too. Perhaps add a couple hundred buffer for next trip even if you hope to never use it. It may help you to relax and not spend part of your day pissed about losses. I have found the old Ghostbusters that consistently paid well (Palms and Tropicana) have disappeared and the duds (Cosmo) remain. Not sure if my luckiest at Wynn remains but I hit the slimer bonus on it, if memory serves, around 6 times one night and played it for about 6 hours. I better get back and see if it is still there.

I loved your trip report - to the point that I was actually bummed when I got near the end - I just felt like I could relate to everything. I've got a NINE DAY trip coming up this Saturday (with something called "work" in-between) and I'm bringing the most money I have ever brought.. 4k.. which was me saving for about 6 months. This is my last trip and I want to make the most of it (baby on the way and I refuse to blow money in Vegas that I could be saving for the baby or spending on the baby). :)

I am going to make it a point to hit those damn Ghostbusters machines and post a pic for you! sweet revenge will be ours!! :)

Thanks for sharing - honestly cannot wait to go and reports like yours make the build-up a lot more tolerable..

I hope you have an awesome pre-baby Vegas extravaganza. See if the Ghostbuster's machine is still at Wynn. I am going to look for it in May. Will you be going to any shows?

    Thank you!

I was trying to look for an excuse to go to the Wynn - and now I have one. I will definitely check it out.

No shows - my wife was silly enough to let me go solo... and knowing her.. the wait won't be nearly as long as I think it will be. It will just be a different kind of Vegas experience..

Nice report, nice seeing that Excal has tubs, when I stayed there last it was only showers.

Your budget is like mine, and its refreshing to not be the only "low roller" going. Im going for 5 nights and will have about 1200-1400 and am going to try to stay under 700 for the trip. I also do like you, I use the cash for gambling and tips and such, and credit cards for food and more expensive things.

Unless the TR is "live", a lot of those "get in a hole reports" without a good comeback don't get written up very much. To write a detailed TR, the author sorta has to "relive" the trip.

Good TR, I liked reading about your experience. Felt 'real' to me.

That makes perfect sense. I've had trips I wanted to forget even before I got on the plane home!

We played the bartops at the Sherwood bar, which was pretty nice, and the bar behind the registration desk, which wasn't as comfortable. I am not savvy enough to recognize the better pay tables, except to look for 9/6 on Jacks or Better, so I am afraid I can't answer your question. Sorry
