Wifey and I are seriously considering moving there, from South Carolina, in a couple years. I'll be 50 and the kids will all be gone. My work can be done anywhere.

Whats stopping you from moving there?

The ridiculous heat in the summer! I've lived in Nevada all of my adult life (am 56 now moved here at 21) in Carson City and Incline Village. I spend time in Las Vegas monthly and I just hate the 4 months of God awful heat, in particular the fact that it doesn't cool down at night like it does up here. Of course, I've been to Charleston and Columbia several times in early September and it was 90 degrees and 90% humidity and that was no picnic either!!! I have a friend who just retired at 55 from Alaska and he moved to Las Vegas (Centennial Hills) about 18 months ago and he and his wife LOVE it. They like to travel and love McCarran and all the direct flights they can get from there, certainly compared to where they came from.

I suppose the other thing I don't care for much is what I call the lack of a "sense of community" in the Las Vegas area. It all grew so quickly with so many people from all over, it just seems to lack the "character" of other metropolitan areas I've visited. That's how it appears to me, but I have many friends and associates that live there, some for several generations who attest that I'm just not looking hard enough. Lot's of these folks live in beautiful neighborhoods, attend nice churches, are members of various clubs and almost NEVER venture to the Strip. Las Vegas for them isn't what I seem to always see.

With how many nights a year I spend there I guess you could already call it a second home.

I posted a thread yesterday about moving to LV... the only thing stopping me is a place to live. I've done a lot of searches on the usual sites... Realtor.com and Zillow.com, and there are so many places that are perfect for me. Financially I can't rent a house by myself tho and I do not want to live in apt. I work from home so can live anywhere and like several have said, I'm done with the humidity of the east coast. I want sunshine, palm trees and heat, and easy access to be able to visit other places makes Vegas an easy decision. I have friends there now and have a couple that lived there that loved it. if anyone is interested, email me! [email protected].

We have family that live in Summerlin and Henderson and have thought about leaving, but I'm not sure it's a real possibility right now. My wife is a stay at home mom and we live OK with my income. Our baby girl is only nine months old so moving now wouldn't be a smart move, I think. But then again, if we could secure employment it would be feasible.

FWIW we currently live in Michigan, so the heat in the desert wouldn't be an issue with us having humidity-filled summers.

Simply that it's not a place we want to live, and we have had that opportunity. It is a fun place for a visit but the weather, demographics, setting don't resonate with us on a daily basis. We love deserts, but the West has -- for us -- far more interesting, scenic and livable desert locations and towns.

I've been planning to move to LV for over 5 years now. My retirement is only 45 weeks away. In 2012 when the real estate fell to all time lows, my wife and I purchased a lovely 3 bedroom ranch by Lone Mountain for a fraction of the price. Real estate taxes are $1300/annually compared to $12,500 in my current home. We were looking for a spot that we could live comfortably on 65% of my salary (pension amount) and without state income tax Nevada brings that up to 72% as 7% of my salary goes to NY state in income tax, and Las Vegas cost of living is only 49% of what it is on Eastern Long Island(city-data.com info). We didn't want the need of a snow shovel or lawn mower any longer, so we knew the desert will most likely accommodate those wishes, or a condo in florida. We wanted great weather with no humidity, 55 years of living by an ocean is enough humidity, mosquitos, gnats, horseflies, mildew, mold for a lifetime (there goes any florida idea). We also wanted a place to provide the exciting life we're use to in living on Long Island, with the city so close, a billion things to keep you occupied, and we wanted gaming close by, and Vegas, with all it's entertainment, restaurants, hotels and casinos provide all of that.

so why you should move to LV? The reasons we are retiring there summerized:

    Lower housing costs
    Lower real estate taxes
    Lower cost of living
    No state income tax
    No snow
    No lawn or leaf raking
    No flying insects
    Entertainment out the wazoo.
    Thousands of restaurants to try
Gaming action all over and the perks that come with it (Buffets, senior days, Bingo, etc)
over a dozen National parks in driving distance
    Sunshine 300+ days a year
    No humidity
glorious vistas to take in every where you look.
Fly non-stop to just about any city in America

And for those 3 very hot scorching months we'll travel, or picnic upon Mt. Charleston anytime swimming or AC isn't enough. Remember it's only scorching come afternoon and early evening. Mornings are still very pleasant.

But 3 months indoors is still better than the 5 months I live indoors here in the Northeast. (mid Nov-mid Apr), and mornings are even worse. 14 degrees this morning on LI and it's March 19th!!!!

These are the reasons for me and my wife. It's just one opinion. You'll have to make your decisions based on your own reasons.

    Good luck.

What's stopping me? Ever heard the song that goes like this "...it's no fun...being an illegal alien..."? I'm Canadian. Unless we could both manage to get through the immigration process it just wouldn't happen. We'd have to do some kind of 1 year visa and come home. Which doesn't make sense for us. We're not in any work fields that would allow that kind of thing. Might as well wait it out until we retire and become snowbirds. I'd like to do an over 55 mobile home community within about 1 hour of Vegas and escape the winters here in Canada. I also hate the humidity where we live so we'll be moving away from this area. (southwestern Ontario-great lakes basin-humidity that will a grown man cry)

For me, living there would ruin it. Most people that live there rarely even go to the Strip unless it's where they work. As much as I love visiting, by the time the end of my trips I arrive, I am always ready to get home.

I have certainly considered it over the years, but I would have concerns about crime rates, stability of the job market, and the fact that even the areas away from the Strip don't really seem to have the same sense of community I have here.

I would not miss Minnesota winters at this point though, so maybe I should look somewhere else.

I think there's a difference between loving the strip and the casinos and our vacation lives there... and loving the weather and the landscape and the area. If you just love the strip etc, you're probably not going to be happy there. Just my opinion.

Ha! I spent a week in the downtown area a couple years ago, I think it was April, cause baseball had just started. On my way out of town, I was raving to the cab-driver about what a cool city Minneapolis seemed to be. I really was impressed!!! He said, "well... before you load up the moving-van, you might want to come back in January!!!"

True. I've lived here for 20 years and I'm still not used to the -10 and -20 temps. If the winters weren't so harsh, I would not even consider moving as I really like most everything else.

OK, not looking to slam Vegas because we still love to vacation there.
We did move there and gave it a two year shot.
We both were not bothered by the summer heat and golfed when it was low 100s. Quickly learned to not have a beer or two on the front 9.
    No state income tax.
No mosquitoes:thumbsup:, but lots of cockroaches on the patio at night. We never did a bug service because of the dog, but we never had them in the house, either.

    Some of the outstanding negatives:
We both developed allergies and we never had them before and now we still have them.
The dust, it is everywhere even with the house windows closed.
Health care availability. People waiting for months to see a specialist.
    Very poor water quality.
The crazy drivers and traffic at all times of the day.

Enough for now. Just think long and hard before moving. Yea, we are back in WI winters, but closer to family and unlike the East Coast, we didn't get slammed this winter, but there is always next year. :wink2:

i guess I'm the only one that wouldn't be able to live there because I'd gamble to much and it would t be a safe situation.

I have a great job where I am.
Vegas and Reno are both 5 hour drives away which is perfect distance. Not too close where we can just hop in the car and make a day of it (although we have in the past just hopped in the car and made a 3 day of it), and not too far away where we really have to plan a lot of logistics into getting there.

And living there would kill the fun of vegas

Las Vegas is a unique city, we are extremely transient. Which does bring about schemers and crime, but once you scratch the surface we have a very tight knit community. We might not know our neighbors (can be hard in 24/7 city). But residents of Las Vegas rally for their neighbors in need. I've witnessed and been party to incredible acts of kindness. I don't know if it's because people here know what struggle is and understand it can be overcome, but the generosity is really amazing. At my work, we are constantly raising funds for co-workers that come on hard times, donating to charity, participating in food, coat and toy drives. Collecting blankets for animal shelters. Adopting families at Thanksgiving and Christmas. We're not alone. I see it all over. Whenever the radio promotes various drives they have amazing turn out. Different groups are well supported outside grocery stores. Even the homeless collect cash, water and snacks on the roadside. Everyday.

Religion is very strong here. Groups are endless. Even in my apartment complex a walking group has formed to meet a few times a week. I don't have kids or pets, but I know there are mommy groups and bonds are formed at dog parks. Hell, there's a bunch of us that bond over beer at weekly events. There is something for everyone. You get what you put in.

I thought about that if I was rich, I wouldn't pay for a house in Vegas. Why? Because I think that the hotel is a huge part of the Vegas experience. I like to spend sometime where I have no duties to be done and where I feel I am in vacation.

A couple years ago I received a job offer but we didn't really consider it. The schools, the healthcare issues and the lack of opportunities in the immediate area if I wanted to leave the company made it not practical.
