The last 2 years have started out with us thinking that we were not going to make it to Vegas. Last year was my 40th birthday and my husband surprised me with a trip for my birthday. Fast forward a year and surprise, my in-laws paid off our house (yes they are amazing!!!) so we now have extra $$$$ and are thinking another trip. My husband has always wanted to stay at Luxor in a pyramid room, I have heard bad things about them. Would we be doing better to stay at Monte Carlo or New York, New York? I think we have eliminated MGM due to the walk to the pool, and Mirage because we want to stay south.

We stayed at the Luxor a couple years ago. I remember the shower having a slow drain and the rooms just needing an update. Other than that we enjoyed it. It was interesting going up in that Pyramid shaped elevator. I heard that it is no longer so much Egyptian style, not sure how true that is.

It was something on our to do list so we did it. Not sure I would do it again. New York New York is next on the list. Basically working our way up the strip.

Congrats on your home being paid off!

I dunno how long the walk is to the pool, but I know the Luxor pool sucks compared to Monte Carlo or MGM.

I have stayed on three different occasions. I actually like the place, gf doesn't much care for it though. If you stay there make sure you get a tower room. Staying in the pyramid is a novelty that quickly wears off when you see the tiny bathroom and dated furnishings. I like NYNY, its a better place to stay than Luxor, better location, better all around hotel in most peoples opinions. I used to stay at Luxor primarily in the winter when I didn't plan on leaving resort all that much. EVERYTHING is a walk from the Luxor, even Mandalay to which it is attached.

Oyster usually has some good pics (here's some for Luxor pyramid room). I think you're going to get the same quality room if you stayed in the same class room at MC, NYNY, or Luxor. If room quality does matter a bit, I'd reconsider MGM as they redid their rooms within the last couple of years. I've stayed at Luxor twice myself, both times in the Tower and can't complain. Room was clean and comfortable. It's not in my top 5 Vegas hotels, but it works.

We just stayed in the pyramid room back in December - my husband really wanted to stay there too. I thought I would hate it but I really liked it. Room was fine bathroom small but updated. The inclinators are a little rough -- everyone laughed about it. The draw back to the pyramid room in the summer is I heard they are hard to cool off -- We did not have that problem in December.

Just had a nights stay in a pyramid room last week. (our first stay at Luxor) I thought the room itself was fine, and not nearly as bad as others have described. I didn't find the bathroom or the room small. The beds were very comfy. What It did not like was that our room was so far away that I did not even go down to the casino as we arrived late and didn't want to make the trek alone. I would stay there again if I could have a room that is much closer to the casino. And yes, the inclinator (elevator) was a weird ride and I felt like it was easy to lose your balance.

I stayed at Luxor a couple of times when Luxor was only the Pyramid. I'm an old school guy, i used to love Luxor and NYNY (again, before the changes took over). I loved staying in the Pyramid, bust most people nowadays consider the Pyramid a downgrade compared to the Towers.
You'll find people complaining about every hotel in Vegas. Whether is be Luxor, NYNY, Planet Hollywood, Caesars, MGM, etc.
I have stayed at most every hotel on the Strip, including many that are gone now.
My advice, stay at Luxor or stay at Monte Carlo/NYNY. Any one of those hotels the good far outweighs the bad. And most of the bad is not nearly as bad as some people seem to think.
There is no perfect hotel in Vegas, there's no perfect hotel anywhere. Just have a good time, and enjoy Vegas.

What a 'Jack Pot' story and you haven't even made to Vegas yet!

Stay in the pyramid... at least once!

A few other thoughts when staying there...

    1) The casino is in the pyramid as opposed to the towers and from the towers a little walk
    2) Valet - (if you rent or drive) it is a long walk unless you are in the back of the pyramid
(come to think of it, it's a long walk no matter what)
    3) Rear of pyramid is also closer to the pool and self park garage
    4) Lower floor rooms are larger and the walk to the inclinator is long, so, request a room close to the inclinator
the view out of the pyramid & the pool is average at best, jacuzzi is nothing to speak of

    Enjoy!

Echoing the comments from above, and I'll add my two cents: Staying in the Pyramid is a cool thing. I was there a few years back, and the room badly needed updating. And, in summer, the sun against the windows was absolutely scorching -- as in, seriously, you will burn your fingers if you touch the window during the afternoon. But there were two really key high points:

    1. You get to ride an inclinator to your room, instead of an elevator. That's a cool sensation.

    2. The showers, while small, have a very nice, wide ledge at the top of the sliding door. It was the perfect size for a can of beer or other drink. So drinking in the shower was super easy. Total highlight.

I like the place but only if the price is right and only in a tower room. I stayed in a pyramid room when it first opened (no choice of course, there were no towers then) but the other couple of times I've stayed there it was in a tower room, those rooms are a better choice. MC and NYNY are considered better although personally I don't think either is all that great.

LOL, now that is worth it!
Yes, the glass get hot and one trip we had a remarkable view of the Sphinx butt!

VegasVic: After the towers were built we too had stayed in them. Although the pyramid is older, we still prefered it over the towers, but they are newer.
For a first timer, (imho) the pyramid has to be the place to park it, the inclinator, the proximity to the casino the ambiance of the pyramid thingy

All this said, I would not stay there given the other choices unless gratis.
Reminds me of staying at The Hotel over Mandaly Bay...just didn't like it and switched upon check-in (many moons ago)

Pyramid rooms are unique. The way the wall is shaped makes some people feel claustrophobic (that's what my wife and her friend said). The rooms get hot, and we stayed their over memorial day and the room did not get cool enough for us. The inclinator is cool, and looking down at the mezzanine level is cool (not as cool as it used to be looking down at the casino). The walk can be long from where your room is to the inclinator, where it could be longer to get to the pool then MGM. Have you stayed or looked at Mandalay Bay? It might be a little more then Luxor, but the Beach is pretty cool and not a long walk from the rooms.

Thanks for all the input, I think we have eliminated the Luxor for now. Maybe in the future, but we are planning on going in July so we want to be able to cool down in the room. Now we are thinking about MGM, I have enough LP's from MyVegas to cover the room again this year.

For gratis or good deal it's ok.

Good idea to stay somewhere else.

Go to the Luxor and visit the low and high rooms & their suites to get the vibe.

I actually did have WiFi at Luxor last week and I had a Pyramid room. I probably wouldn't return even if gratis but I didn't really like my time there. The only things I did like were Fantasy (yes, really) and the Centra bar - and finding delicious ShockTop cider on tap near the sportsbook.

Mentioned this in another thread recently, but realize it's appropriate here ... for all its faults, the Luxor does have a really nice bar in Flight. Some solid prices on bubbly, if I recall correctly. Worth a stop.

Frank, I have stayed at The Luxor twice in the last year on MyVegas deals and both times had wifi.

I'm sure I was told that it was Wired internet access but I was in a Tower room both times and the wifi worked fine without cables.
