I know it's all probability, you can put in $100 and hit a hand pay within 5minutes. Or put in $1000 and play for 1hour and hit nothing.

My question is, for all you experienced machine players out there, how much in your opinion (and rough estimation) does it take for you to hit that lovely "please call attendant sign"?

    This includes:

How much you would generally feed the beast until you see some return?
How long do you spin for in a session (sitting down at a certain machine)?
How much you play for each spin (.01 vs .25 vs 1.00)?
What game you might usually play when visiting? (optional)
and whats the fastest you've ever hit a hand pay? (optional)

I think this is interesting for all those who are intimidated by machines because we've all heard that they're greedy a-holes who just take and doesn't give back but love seeing hand pays on VMB and other websites a like. Of course it's all luck in the end and not much strategy besides some games, it's just nice to get a gauge on it incase I want to try some runs at the machines next visit (primiarly Paigow and BJ player here... some slot games for drinks, nothing more then .01 or .25 never hit a hand pay. )

Bigger denominations will see more handpays. Playing a $5 and up machine would make it much easier to see a $1200+ return then on a quarter machine. I've been going to Vegas for 20 years now and have had 3 handpays in all my trips. I never play more than $2 a spin. When it comes to slots % payback means nothing to me. It is all timing and luck. I could play a 99% payback machine for 24 hours straight and I would still lose my bankroll ;)

At the moment, it's been my lifetime. But I often am playing machines/stakes where a handpay is either impossible (quarter non-progressive VP) or highly improbable (penny slots for 30 cents a spin).

Totally! I think for people who can afford $5 plays they're more likely to see that handpay. (IE: players on VMB) I however hestiate to play it because I do not frequent Vegas and I'm not a highroller but play for fun. I would love to see a handpay though at quarters!

HandPays ($1199+ jackpots) are really only going to happen if you're playing MAX bet on pennies (seldomly).
To get them to happen more often , you need to be playing $5+ slots or video poker.
Then, a 250+ credit win, is a handpay, which occur frequently.

Honestly, for slots the only things that factor in are the pay table and the amount you bet per spin.

The higher the bet per spin, the more likely you are to hit a handpay.

    I've had three:
$1,250 on the original Wizard of Oz penny machine at Mandalay Bay playing $3.00 a spin (400x)
$12,000 on a Triple Double Diamond machine at Aria playing $25 a spin (480x)
$3,600 on a Triple Diamond machine at Cosmo playing $4 a spin (900x)

The last two were on the last two trips and I gotta admit it's spoiling me a little. If I'm playing $10 a spin, I'm almost expecting one now. But it just doesn't work that way.

What do you mean by 400x? That's interesting. Do you mean you spinned roughly $1200 so that breaks even?

Interesting! I too like to play the WoF. And I think you and I play similiar hands at penny/.25 pulls. Lol. I like slots and don't know myself around the different VP games to give it a shot. I've been reading a lot about it so I might give it a go this year.

Learning proper strategy on vp (job) was one of the best things I ever did for gambling.

No, the number at the end is the payout as a multiple of the bet. For the Wizard of Oz one, it actually should be 417 (1,250 divided by 3).

And just as a function of time and amount bet - I had been playing the Wizard of Oz slot for hours per trip for several trips always at max bet $3, before I hit the handpay. The $12,000 at Aria, 5 minutes, if that. The $3,600 at Cosmo, maybe 20 - 30 mins.

I don't think I'd argue for a hit-or-run strategy, but that's just my personal preference; in theory, it shouldn't make any difference. But I like to load up a machine with a lot of cash at the beginning, especially if it's a high volatility game; you gotta be able to outlast cold streaks.

    My answers:

How much you would generally feed the beast until you see some return?

    A. - No more than $100 or $200, but remember that sometimes I play $5 or $10

How long do you spin for in a session (sitting down at a certain machine)?

    A. - For me, it depends on how the machine is reacting. Today, I was on a machine that regularly provided bonuses and big payouts, I stayed on it for about an hour, but my secondary objective today (as it is most every time) was to accumulate slot points

How much you play for each spin (.01 vs .25 vs 1.00)?

    A. - 99% of the time I am a "full max" player. If I don't have the money to make the maximum bet, I don't play.

What game you might usually play when visiting? (optional)

    A. - I always make it a point to play $5 Double Diamond

and whats the fastest you've ever hit a hand pay? (optional)

    A. - New Year's Eve I hit an $8k jackpot after 6 pulls on a $5 Double Diamond at the D, about 15 years ago I hit the progressive on the 6th pull of a $5 Double Diamond at Bally's Las Vegas. On my mLife Platinum disaster weekend I hit for $6k on 3 pulls on a 2 coin $5.00 Triple Cash machine, but that was when I was already $7k down.

He means the jackpot was 400x the bet.

I hit a $10,000.00 jackpot playing $2.50 a pull. That is 4000x, very, very high. Normally the top end jackpot on a non progressive machine is 400x-1250x. As an example, the top end jackpot on a Double Diamond machine is 400x, on a Triple Diamond machine it's 900x. The difference is in the multiplier reels.

DaiLun, I have followed your TRs in the past and they are extremely fun to read. Thanks for the info! In your opinion, what's the best game to play for a hand pay for lower rollers like myself? I am looking to put a couple hundred into this goal and if I don't hit it then oh well, no big deal (not like I look to get rich when I go visit Vegas, I usually lose it all in the end anyways :p). But say I want to gamble like say $200~ on slots at $1-5 a pull. What would you say, strategically, is the best way to go about that? VP? Fun games? I was thinking about doing games such as Wizard of Oz or Michael Jackson for fun but don't know if it's worth it.

I'm not Dailun, but if you just want to take a shot, win or lose, I suggest $1 2x/5x/10x Quick Hit. The progressives reset at $1000 and hit frequently enough that they often get hit before reaching $1100. If you hit a progressive on one of these, a sub-$1200 hit will be a handpay, without a W2G. My second pick would be a $1 Blazing 7's Quick Hit machine.

This is going to be your key question:

On three reel machines you usually have to betting at least dollars to have a chance to win enough in a single spin to trigger a hand pay and even then a lot of them stop short of the hand pay level.

For penny video slots most can never get to the hand pay level. Some of the newer super volatile machines can or some where the max bet has been pushed higher than normal (IE: the norm for a machine might be a max bet of 5x or 8x, but a casino might have it set to 20x or more).

So if your goal is to get a hand pay you really have to look at the machine and just ask yourself if you can even hit a hand pay on it or not - if the max prize is 5 logo symbols pay 1,000 times credits bet and the max bet is ten credits then no you can't: max prize would be 100,000 pennies, or $1000.

Another thing with hand pays is: on video slots most of the time its just relative. IE: playing the machine ____ and betting 10x credits per line has a top prize of $1500... a hand pay. But betting 1x credits per line has a top prize of $150. Effectively its exactly the same just in one case you are betting ten times more so the prize is exactly ten times bigger.

    My fastest was back-to-back spins.

I was playing a nickle Choy Sun Doa machine at my local casino and hit the free spin bonus. Wound up with an overall so-so bonus round but I retriggered it four times and wound up with a $1650 win. They paid me and then the very next spin I hit the bonus again and during the bonus I had a spin that won 64,000 nickles so it was about a $3400 hand pay

If your goal was to get a hand pay just because, I would play 9/6 DDB (98.98%) for $25 per hand (5 credits x $5). Any quad or better is at least $1250.

Most definitely the higher the denomination the higher the payback; thus more hand pays.
In the past two trips, I hit 1000 credits twice and 500 credits twice. There were $1 machines so no hand pay.
If they were $5 or $10, $25 or oh my god $100 machines that would have been awesome.

What is this thing you call a "hand pay"?

Seriously, we have yet to have any payout higher than one on free play at The Plaza for over $800 on about a .50 cent bet.

We're low rollers; maybe we will see one someday!!
