    My Trip Report

I haven’t been posting for a while. Sometimes life gets in the way and there’s other things to do…

I normally go to Vegas around 4/5 times each year but last year I only went twice. I’m think that it’s probably since I’ve been having some losing/frustrating trips recently that I’ve experiencing some “Vegas burn-out”. So last year my wife and I traveled more to other parts of the mainland – Denver, Blackhawk CO (nice casinos there), Mt Rushmore, Milwaukee (to visit my son), Cleveland (Rock & Roll Hall of Fame), Sacramento, Reno/Lake Tahoe, Washington DC and NYC.

My last trip to Vegas was back in July and by January I was just itching to go back. Saw some fares under $250 each way, checked my bConnected account and saw I was still being comped 4 nights at Main Street Station and decided that I need to get away from this rock!

Nowadays it unusual to find Hawaiian Airlines airfare under $500/roundtrip. Most times I end up paying closer to $600 (usually more). I could use the mileage I’ve accrued but I do need at least 4 round trips to earn enough air miles to retain my gold status (gotta have that free luggage and better seat selection perks, that’s important!)

I had the Emerald card at Boyds for 2 years but gave it up after talking with a Host from MSS. At that time I was averaging $10k - $12k daily with 90% of that being blackjack. I was told that if I wanted anything else, I had to “step up my play”. REALLY?? So after much consideration, I decided that since I was within 30k of renewing my Emerald status for another year that I would pursue that – but scale down my play once I’ve achieved that goal.

Immediately after renewing Emerald, I reduced my play from $10k-$12k/day to $2k-$2.5k, an 80% reduction in play. I’m still playing the same games and having MORE FUN while reducing my exposure and preserving my bankroll. I figure that my comps will eventually be reduced but for now, I’m Sapphire and am still getting the 4 free nights monthly that I’ve been getting the past few years.

Note: If the Host thought that I would “step up my play” it had the exact opposite effect on me. It made me think about how much I’m risking and that it would be cheaper for me to “pay” for comps on my own rather than “earn” them.

Note: So for you VP/Slot players with $10k+/day coin-in with extras such as a suite, Gold/Silver card, limo and other nice perks – be thankful of what you’ve got. I only get 4 night comps a month, never received a suite even though I was Emerald and rarely got food/FP comps!

We’ll see what will happen after this trip…

    Transportation
I normally rent a car for my time in Vegas, but the rental prices just wouldn’t go down. It probably was due to it being NASCAR weekend – prices being more than x2 what they were asking for the previous week. I booked a car at Advantage for the last 3 days of my trip. Pick up at MSS, drop-off at the airport (that covers my “to the airport” transportation), and its only $80 (including taxes) for the weekend. I used a special code (more on this later) to get a compact at $18.95/day. Budget & Dollar wanted $150 for the same 3 days.

Since I chose an expensive week to go to Vegas, I decided to use the WAX for my initial transportation needs. My flight is scheduled to arrive at 6:35 AM. I plan to be out of Terminal 3 with my bags at 7:10 and wait for the 7:47 WAX bus which will takes me straight to Suncoast. This is my plan… Let’s see how it goes…

    Getting There
Our flight on Hawaiian Airlines was scheduled for 10:50 PM. The plane leaves the gate and sits on the tarmac for 20 minutes. The pilot announces that there is a computer problem and maintenance has to work on it back at the gate. So back to the gate we go. We finally take off at 12:20 AM. One and a half hour late. I knew this would haunt me later.

Remember that my plan was to take the 7:47 WAX? I would be at Suncoast before 9:00, check-in/leave my bags with the bell desk and walk over to the Rampart Casino for the weekly 10 o’clock Blackjack tournament. This is now in jeopardy.

We land at McCarran at 7:45. Thinking I still can make the 8:18 bus and guess what… it takes us over 12 minutes to taxi to the D gates. Did the pilot get lost finding the gate? Hustle down to the baggage claim in Terminal 3. The baggage belt starts moving at 8:11. I patiently wait for the bags to start dropping but there was not a single bag to be seen. 3 minutes later, the first of the bags arrive.

My bag comes out at 8:17. Can I can still make the 8:18 WAX bus? Grab my bag and run like a crazy man out of T3 and down to the bus stop. As I get to the end of the terminal building, I see the WAX bus driving away. AWE MAN!! If I was 30 seconds sooner he would’ve seen me! Now I have to wait for the 9:16 bus! I resign myself to the reality of the situation, sit down and start freezing my nads off in the 40+ degree cold. For an hour. Not a good way to start my trip. I wonder if this is some kind of omen…

    WP_20150303_004.jpg WP_20150303_003.jpg

I get to Suncoast and hurray, they have a room for me. Put my stuff away and head on down to the casino to play some blackjack.

    WP_20150303_008.jpg WP_20150303_009.jpg

    The Gambling Starts
First hand of blackjack – I get dealt a 6 & 3 and the dealer is showing a 6. A good double-down opportunity. Place my double-down bet on the table. Watch as the dealer flips a 4 for a 10 and deals an 8 for 18. Flips my card over and I have a 4. LOSER!! Lose the next hand. And the next. And the next. 7 losing hands in a row before a get dealt a blackjack on my last bet. A winning hand! But wait – the dealer is showing an Ace. At this point I ask for and take the even money payout because a win is a win, especially the first one in 7 hands. Not a good start to this trip…

I make a comeback from this point and finish the shuffle down only 1 unit. 2 shuffles later, it’s all gone. I decide to back to the room and take a nap. A short nap. A 30 minutes… maybe 45…

3 hours later I wake up and it’s after 3 PM. What?? Go back downstairs and do what I came to Vegas to do…

Played some more blackjack, not too bad. Minimal loses but losing sessions none the less.

I realize that I haven’t eaten all day so I leave the Suncoast and walk across the street to the Boca Park shopping complex. There I go to Grimaldi’s pizza. I’m a small guy and don’t really eat much. I bought a 12” personal pizza and ate the whole thing. There was nothing left. I can’t believe I did it. First time…

    WP_20150303_023.jpg WP_20150303_026.jpg WP_20150303_027.jpg WP_20150303_030.jpg

Back to Suncoast and blackjack. The only memorable hand I had was the last hand of a day. I double-down with A7 against a dealer 4. He flips over a 5 then draws a 2 for 11. Then draws an 8 for 19. Not good for me. Only an Ace will tie, a 2 or 3 will win it for me. Any other card is a loser.

He flips over my down card. It’s a 3… Hallelujah!

I also tried craps. I’ve been watching videos on YouTube and talking with my kid brother who’s a heavy craps player. I decided to try it out playing only the pass line with odds and 2 come bets with odds.

I buy in for $100 and the first 2 shooters 7-out. The dice gets passed to me. Me, I just pick up the dice and as long as it doesn’t show a 7, I just throw them.

My very first Craps roll goes for 20 minutes. The boss says I did around 50 rolls. I made a couple of people some money, got them out of the hole. Me? I’m not sure what I had after the roll, but I know it wasn’t much. After a few more roll sessions I call it quits. I made 4 dollars. I need to find out more about pressing and stuff on a hot shooter…

First day I’m down $180. Not bad considering…

    More later...

    Day 2
Go to the kiosk to swipe for today’s mystery multiplier – its 10x. I notice that I have a free breakfast/lunch buffet coupon being offered. Score! Free food is always good.

Killed some time and waited for the weekly 10:00 Blackjack tournament. At 9:50 I took a look at the line and decided not to play. I didn’t come to Vegas just to stand in lines. I hate lines…

Checked out and took the WAX to Downtown. $2 and 30 minutes later I’m checking into MSS.

I like playing at MSS and the CAL. It’s like that old TV show, where everyone knows my name…

Saw the .25 DDB VP progressive was over $2000. Played for an hour but was only able to contribute to the overall jackpot. I’ll try again later.

My only quad for the trip… not that I play that much VP…

My closest shot at a royal…

Tried my usual $20 into Megabucks. Every trip I always try a $20 just to see what may happen. No jackpot, but I actually won $80. Keep trying but nada. Oh well, try again next time…

More blackjack. Nothing noteworthy. Some winning sessions, some losing ones. Very choppy…

By the end of the day, I’m back up to even overall… 2 days play for free – very nice!

    Day 3
After waking up I need some food and decide to go to Dupar’s for their pancakes. On the way a blackjack table at MSS was calling my name. I stop and reached into my pocket and handed over some money. It was like being mugged. 6 straight losing hands. All gone. Next time I should wear earplugs…

After breakfast, I strolled into Fremont and dropped some money at their blackjack table. 1 win and 7 loses later, I leave.

I need a break from this bleeding (more like a gushing wound). I walked around the D and go upstairs to play the .25 pinball slot machine. IT’S GONE!! This is the only reason I go to the D. Oh well, its time to leave.

Walk over to the “Sweaty Spaniard” (El Cortez). I need to stop the bleeding so I decide to play $5 blackjack to kill time. I buy in with $40 and actually make a profit. I end up cashing out with $110, a 14 unit profit. At $5… I just chuckle to myself and am actually relieved that I made a profit and got to play a longer session.

You see a lot of interesting people while playing on the tables. At LVC I sat with a drunk guy (at noon… boy was he drunk). I couldn’t understand a word he was saying. And he was winning! He had a pile of chips (and I mean a PILE. It wasn’t stacked but in a pile. Red chips, green chips). He would play so slow, kept getting distracted, needed to be reminded to pick up his winnings or place his bet. It didn’t bother me at all… I was enjoying the entertainment both by him and the busty dealer who kept leaning across the table towards me…

At the EC I sat next to a “jerk” (I’m refraining from saying a different name). His wife/girlfriend kept telling him they had to go. No, he keeps playing. She says her dad is waiting in the car. Keeps playing. Eventually he lights up a cigar. I’m outta there… Walk by 10 minutes later, he’s gone.

Stopped by the Downtown Grand. I wanted to check out the blackjack tables to see and complain if they were 6:5. The 5$ 6 deck game has 3:2 on the table felt. The $15 double deck game is 6:5. I didn’t look in the high limit room.

Walked back to MSS and played the .05 VP progressive. It was now at $888. Tried that for an hour and again, only contributed to the overall jackpot.

I read about the $1 blackjack that started in January at Binions every Thursday from noon to midnight and planned to spend some time playing some cheap BJ while I wait for my brother to fly in. I go to Binions and find out they stopped offering $1 blackjack – last week Thursday was the last time. It may be back after "further review". Wow, what a bummer. Oh well, no reason to play in Binions.

My brother is taking the WAX into downtown. The bus breaks down… He later tells me it first stalled on Tropicana and again by the Premium Outlets. At the Bonneville TC it broke down. He decided to walk the last mile to MSS…

My brother gives me some betting strategies on Craps and we go to the Fremont for dinner and play some Craps. Not too bad. My $100 cashes out with $140.

I need more practice so we stop over at 4 queens and play the “bubble Craps”. $40 turns into $103.92

That night’s blackjack was brutal. I should’ve stuck to Craps or $5 blackjack instead…

    Day 4
Pick up my 3 day car rental from Advantage RAC in MSS. I found a great rate of $18.95/day during this busy weekend. She tells me that the code I used was valid only if I arranged my trip through Vacations Hawaii. I didn’t but nicely explained that the page and web checkout process did not have any disclaimer or requirement statement. She was really nice about it and let me have the rate “this time”. I am really appreciative as the normal rate is $79/day. I thank her, get my brother and head out to the Riviera.

The Riviera has a lot of history and I’ve never set foot in the place during all the trips I’ve taken to Vegas. Actually, I’ve never set foot on the north strip at all. So this morning my brother and I will be checking out the Riviera, Circus Circus, the SLS and Circus Circus casinos. I’ll save WynnCore for some other time.

At the Riviera I got a player’s card, bought a $1 chip and $30 promotional chips for $20. I walk around the tables I see why I never had any interest to visit this casino. All the tables are 6:5. I sit down at the only open 6:5 CSM table lost 5 straight hands (the last one being a double down). I guess I won’t be coming here again…

Played some more bubble craps $20 for 30 minutes. Cashed out $19.94. Got a lot of betting practice.

Took a look a Circus Circus. Nothing special… walked around for 15 minutes and left.

Finally drove to SLS. The last time I was here it was the Sahara and looked like a dump. It’s a very nice and updated location. Didn’t see blackjack that I liked so we played some Craps.

I bought in with $100 only to find out it is $10 minimum. Which means it’ll cost me double of what I’ve played before. That’s OK. Let’s see where this goes.

I rolled for around 15-20 minutes and made a few points. At one point I only needed to roll a 12 for another player to win the fire bet. Didn’t happen though but he made a lot of money from my roll. As for me… This time I had $394! At least I made some money

Back in Downtown, my brother asks me about how to play video poker. We walk around a bit and I show him about looking at the pay tables and what the differences are. I also show him all the different kinds of vp games and how the pay tables are different. We sit down at the .05 machines at the CAL and he starts playing. I coach him for a bit on card strategies and he quickly picks it up. On a hand he holds a pair of 3’s and this is what shows up…

    WP_20150306_027.jpg

Quad 3’s with a 4 kicker! 800 points! I never got that lucky… and this is on his first time ever playing vp!

Everything else that night was choppy. Blackjack, Craps, VP, slots… up, down, up, down. Lots of fun though!

    Day 5
Nothing exciting during the day but…

With 1 hour left before I have to take my brother to the airport for his flight home, he decides to play vp again. He sends me a text photo with 4 aces – 1600 points on the .05 Progressive at MSS (this is a 10 bet max). This is only his 2nd time playing. Wow… talk about lucky! I tell him to savor these moments… its all downhill from here! :evillaugh

Back to downtown after dropping him off at the airport. Now I go on a roll. For 2 hours playing blackjack, I just cannot lose. Hard 15, draw a 5/6. Hard 16, draw a 5/4. Hard 13, draw a 7/8… I just can’t bust. I have made up all my loses from the past couple of days.

I wanted to watch Cheap Trick playing at FSE. But by 9:00, I had to decide on watching a free concert or keep playing on that wave. It was an easy decision. I’ll have to keep watching the old Cheap Trick videos on YouTube instead…

Eventually all good streaks end and I got out after 3 hands of the dealer making her hands. You could definitely feel a change in the air. Took a break, played some other games and by midnight I decided to go back to my room at MSS. Remember I mentioned earlier that I sometimes hear my name as I walk by the tables? That happened again so I pulled out a chair and sat down for some cheap blackjack.

This time I only bought in with $60 and planned on $10 flat bets. Played for 30 minutes and eventually cashed out with $105. Could’ve been more if I bet normally but that’s OK. Anyway this table is next to the Craps pit so I decide to play one last time before bed.

The first shooter 7s out rather quickly, the next shooter is decent. Makes a few numbers before he 7s out so I’m a few dollars over my initial buy-in. The next shooter goes on a monster roll. He’s making his points and I’m increasing my bets accordingly. After about 25 minutes, I look up and see it’s a different shooter. What happened?? Turns out the first guy was playing the Don’t Pass and was losing a lot of money left and the dice passed to the next shooter (my brother tells me that’s why don’t players usually wont shoot). The next guy rolled for 10 minutes. When he finally 7ed out, I had $700+ in front of me. I was the next shooter… I felt good (and lucky), so I picked up the dice and started shooting…

My roll was a continuation of the previous rollers. A 35 minute roll… at the end I had around $1500 on the rail. All from an initial $60.

I stayed for one more shooter but she 7ed out rather quickly. Colored up $1375, gave the dealers $25 and went up to the room.

    WP_20150308_004.jpg

    Day 6
Because of Daylight Savings Time I ended up going to sleep at 3:40 AM. I wake up with the sunlight creeping through the wooden slats and it’s too early! 7 something… I try to go back to sleep since today is going to be a tough day. Get out of bed at 8:45 and am just tired.

Take care of things and decide to ask a host for possibly a late checkout. No host available at MSS so I go to the CAL. Boy she was rude. After asking for a late checkout, she asked why I didn’t ask at MSS. I told her that no one was there and she seemed annoyed. Made a phone call then offered a late checkout of 1 PM. Didn’t even ask for my name, player’s card or anything. I mentioned about being tired and wanting to take a nap and she says “you better hurry up then”. REALLY?? It’s already almost 11… Whatever…

Gambling this day is not good. It’s never good to play when you’re tired. I know that but who uses their brain while in Vegas? Didn’t feel hungry but ate a won ton min at the new California Noodle House…

    WP_20150308_012.jpg WP_20150308_014.jpg

Somehow I was able to stay awake (alert) enough to drive to the Car Rental return station. Board the plane on time for a 1:45 AM departure and fall asleep waiting for take-off.

But wait, it doesn’t end here…

The plane is delayed 20 minutes because the captain requested additional fuel due to anticipated heavy turbulence. And he wasn’t kidding. The plane was shaking for almost the entire 6 hour trip. I woke up 1.5 hours into the flight because I felt nauseous. Suffered for a bit then went to the restroom but nothing happened there. Spoke with a flight attendant who said a lot of passengers were not feeling well and gave me some Ginger Ale. That resulted in a couple of burps and I did feel a little better. I went back to my seat but not before he gave me a plastic trash bag filled with paper towels and more paper towels to hold on to.

And it’s a good thing I had that bag. Around the 4 hour mark it came out. 4 times… First time ever flying.

Felt good enough to fall asleep for an hour and woke up with 1 hour remaining. Of course the feeling comes back again with 30 minutes remaining, but all is well

    Remarks/Observations
There is a lot of renovations coming to the CAL. In addition to the California Noodle House, the new casino cage opened up in its original location. And it looks different. Too modern. Does not match the rest of the casino at all.

    WP_20150308_010.jpg

Then there’s a pillar by the tables which is walled off. I find out that this pillar will have 4 different designs on it. There they can chose which one they want. I figure there is a massive casino renovation in the works. Maybe the hotel rooms too. I don’t know… What I do know is that if the prices/rules go up/bad significantly, they’ll lose their current market of Hawaiians.

    WP_20150308_009.jpg

Another bad encounter with a host. And I expect that my offers will dry up as well. Which is fine. The rooms are cheap enough there and I can always book the gambling junket through Vacations Hawaii…

Played enough for 24k+ points. No problem making Sapphire for another year. If I bet my old way this would be well over 100k+ points.

A number of slot machines I would kill time on are gone from the CAL and MSS. Cash Wizard, Family Guy and a few others… Couldn’t find anything else to play.

NASCAR weekend bConnected offered a special player’s card and lanyard

    WP_20150309_006.jpg

I was told not to take pictures in the casino while at Suncoast. I asked “Not even if I win something and want to take a picture?” He says “No pictures period.” Just wow… I take pictures anyway… I just try to not be so obvious.

Got to meet the owner of Dupar’s. He came around to the tables while we were eating and spoke with us for a few minutes. Seemed genuinely interested in our comments and appreciative of our patronage. I’ll keep going back for the pancakes and French Toast.

Speaking of Dupar’s… They renovated the room in the front where the cashier and pastries items are. So now that door is an EXIT only. I went in and stood there wondering what’s the deal. After a few minutes I realized that I need to enter from the door closer to the middle of the casino.

I love these signs outside the bathrooms at Pizza Rock

    WP_20150306_020.jpg

Ended the trip down a couple hundred. After adding in my food and stuff I bought to take home, I around even, except for air fare. A very good trip…

That’s it for now. Thanks for reading and I hope you enjoyed this report.

    Now back to reality…

Good read so far. Sorry to see your bad logistics luck with the WAX. But it is a great option to get downtown and to Suncoast.
I never ventured over to Boca to see what they had. Sounds like Grimaldi's hits the spot.
    Looking forward to reading more.

Nice report, thanks for sharing. It amazing how much fun you can have in Vegas for $200. Well done!

Last trip I took a ton of pics at Suncoast and never had anyone say anything. I wonder if this is something new or just a guy having a grumpy day? Honestly, a no pic policy would be pretty hard to enforce. I'll just keep doing it with my flash off.

    Funny sign at Pizza Rock!

Calling the El Cortez the "Sweaty Spaniard" was pretty funny. Thanks for the report.

I'm curious where you got the $200 figure from?
I'm betting he's playing $25 or $100 BJ, since he refer to "units" rather than $$

    Still, nice report.
And yeah, Brenda and Maryline aren't the sharpest tools in the shed, LOL.

Most casinos have a no pic policy. But only assholes/new employees tend to enforce it though. The more and more i read about suncoast and how they treat people, the more i am disappointed. The poker room was fine though this last trip for me.

And nice report! Heck of a run on the craps table!

    Thanks for the comments Tim...

I think he means because I only left a couple hundred bucks in vegas for the entire trip.

Yeah, I'd rather not say how I normally bet on blackjack, but its safe to say a minimum of greens...

    Thanks for the comments!

The security guard looked like an old timer though. Was nice enough about it... "You can keep that picture but cannot take anymore."

I usually don't stay/play much at Suncoast since they rate blackjack so poorly. Playing my old normal way at blackjack got me around 2k card points/day at Suncoast but the same bets at MSS or CAL gets me over 10k card points/day. Go figure...

And I usually lose at Suncoast. That's why they keep offering me 1 day/month comp.

They tend to sweat the bigger bets. Green, or heaven forbid black action, gets alot of attention and frowns. One of the reasons I go there to just kick back and relax at table minimums, or (rarely) very short heavier sessions.
