Table Games Uneducated table players

My vegas trip last week I encountered a lot of players who didn't know how to play. This was on the craps tables. I encountered a number of players who didn't know how to bet but acted like they knew how to play or just didn't seem to get it.

One guy placed $5 each on the 6 and 8, the pit man said that he would get the best odds by placing $6 on the 6 and 8 but the guy acted like he knew what he was doing and said that he wasn't falling for that "scam". I looked at the guy and didn't even want to try to explain it to him, he had that look like he knew how to play. The numbers got hit a few times and he was happy getting a 1 for 1 payback on the $5. I couldn't believe that the guy actually thought he knew what he was doing.

On another table a player put $6 on the pass line (initially had $5 on the line but added $1) but $5 odds when the point was 5 or 9. The dealer tried to explain why you put an even number for 5 and 9 odds but this guy would have none of it.

Different table, the player kept making $6 odds bets for the 6 and 8. The dealers were laughing at the guy and the guy was laughing at it too, not sure if he knew why they were laughing.

One other guy had $50 on the pass line and didn't back up his bet with odds. This was at MSS, somebody tried to help and said that it would be best if the guy played $5 pass line and backed up the bet with $40 or $50 odds. Again the guy acted like he knew what he was doing and continued his betting ways, continuing to get only 1 for 1 on his pass line bets.

Another guy was making the same hop bet on each roll. His logic was that since he would win $36 (35?) if it hit he WILL win it at least once every 36 rolls. Surprise when he found out that it wasn't so, he never won a hop bet but said that his was his routine the last time and he won a bunch of money.

Weirdest one was a guy, putting quarter chips for pass, then putting $30 on all the place bets. This was on the come out roll and he wanted them working. Surprise, the shooter throws a 7 on his come out roll. Most of us were happy that we won our pass line bets but the guy was furious that he lost all his place bets on the first roll. He said that it worked before so continues to work his bets whenever he plays.

Anyway I was in vegas for only 5 days but thought it was strange that I encountered all this while there. Also disappointed that so many people first don't learn how to play the game and how to bet before playing on the table and acting like they knew what they were doing. I know that you can bet however you want but I guess I learned how to maximize my bets and odds by reading up on how to play first.

In most of the plays you could see the look on the pit crew when the player made his bet. :confused2:

 

Sort of like walking up to a slot and saying " This looks like fun...." and proceeding. Am afraid there r more than not these days with the "entertainment" view and not savvy to the numbers involved.

 

oh, you mean like players that continue to play 6/5 bj putting down $50 and $100 chips? Kidding.

 

I see that stuff all the time. The worst is when one guy is explains the game to his 5 buddies with him and he has no clue about the game. He is not explaining the game correctly. When he has the dice, he slows the game down. He also insists on saying "seven" on an ongoing basis during his ongoing explanations to his friends.......and you know how much the rest of the table likes hearing that.

 

Yep. People having fun and playing a game in a way that in no way affects anybody else really pisses me off too.

In all honesty, I've never (randomly; of course through the forum) met anyone who knew how to play "correct" strategy at any casino game!

 

The worst of this can be found at blackjack tables... nothing like hearing the"expert" explain to his buddies that "You never hit 15 or 16. That's what they want everybody to do, but it's the worst play in blackjack you can make!"
or, "Don't pay any attention to those strategy cards. You know, the casinos put those out - that's the only reason they tell you to never split tens - even against a 5 or 6, which you should do."

Over the years I learned it was best, at least for me, to refrain from gambling advice unless asked, and then I qualify my advice by saying "I'm not telling you how to play, but this is how I play it in the same situation, or this is "what the book says" if I am trying to convey the proper play based on mathematics." Don't get upset, don't have an outburst, play your game and if it aggravates you leave the table. Vegas has plenty of other tables, and you likely don't have to move beyond a few feet to return to action.

People do crazy shit with their money, be it at a craps table, with a crack whore, at Best Buy, or any place where humans gather ($600 bottles of Jim Beam anyone?). Humans mostly follow the herd and do crazy shit, and those convinced against their will are of the same opinion still.

The time to learn the math is before you lay your money down, but for those who don't, be it at a craps table, at a pay day lender, at a strip club or at the ballot box, you let people carry on with their crazy shit and carry on controlling what you can and avoiding following the herd, especially when they are headed toward the cliff.

I don't have a problem with someone trying to learn craps.....everyone is a newbie at sometime. I'll never throw out unsolicited advice. If asked, I'll explain why they are better off with a $10 pass line bet and $20 odds instead of them playing a $30 pass line bet with no odds.
I think that craps needs flow to the game. What I don't like is when a player constantly has their hands out even though the dealer had asked them repeatedly to keep their hands back. Also, playing $200, but buying in for $20 at a time and late bets after the dice have left the middle if the table. I don't think many would disagree that disruption in a craps game is never good.

 

On a craps table it doesn't affect my bet at all, so I just let it go, I root for them if they win and chuckle to myself when they lose.

 

I actually love it when I am at a craps table with people that don't know what they are doing. I enjoy seeing them learn the game and really have fun teaching them if they are open to learning from me. I remember not long ago when that was me. I'll never forget the 95 year old man at Gold Coast that told me "a man can lose his life by saying 7 at a craps table." Pretty sure he was dead 30 minutes later

Some people have to start somewhere. I'm one of those "Uneducated," table players. Hopefully the members here will give me some good advice.

 

It's your money, play any way you want, don't let the "veterans" tell you otherwise.
