last night i had a good roll. $10 minimum table.
    point was 5. i bet $10 + $40 odds. i rolled a lot of 6&8 and 9. i finally made the point and made profit of $70.

a guy across from me is playing $64 across, pressing after i made a lot of 6, 8, 9s. after i made the point, he walked away with $500

the house edge for pass line + odds is 0%, whereas the house edge for place bet is 1.52% to 6.67%.

what am i (pass line bettor) doing wrong?

Only your odds have 0% edge. Your line bet still has a house advantage. If you were hitting numbers then a 3 point Molly would have been good to you.

Do you mean you passed while rolling? I don't understand doing that....last time I was at Foxwoods a guy rolled multiple times, was winning, then passed the dice. Think I'm going to pull back my bets if people do that going forward...it only led to bad things (like 7s)

some are more aggressive bettors, placing more numbers/pressing (potential to win constantly) while others just play the passline (only win if you hit your point)...im sure it looked pretty sweet when he cashed on your long roll, but i bet hes had his fair share of first roll 7 outs and lost all of that money he had spread out on the table...tons of different strategy's that look good in hindsight just never know!

What you're doing wrong is not giving yourself a chance.

This lady one time bet $10 pass line no odds. Rolled for 20 min hitting hard ways left and right and numbers and points. Didn't do her any good. Walked away with about $50. Meanwhile she won me $10k.

You didn't do anything "wrong". Two totally different approaches to the game is all it was. He had FAR more numbers covered than you did.

Nothing wrong just different. You bet 50 $ to win 58 $ on a 6 or 8. He bet 64 $ and as you said kept pressing. IF you had hit your number on the very next throw and then point-seven-out he would have lost and you would have won 8 $.

I agree with earlier posters though, get up or feel the warmth of the table and press "part" of your bankroll and ride the wave.

He was also smart. He won and left. Watch how many times you see someone win a good amount only to have it slowly be drained as the table gets choppy or turns.

    ,

Nothing wrong....pass line bet w/ max odds looks good, statistically speaking.... you had $50 total in action, all on the point....statistically speaking, the other guy should have been a loser...he wasn't betting the pass line w/ max odds and making come bets with max odds....he was only placing betting $10 on the point and all the other numbers ($64 across)....lucky for him he left before the stats could catch up to him....
The efficacy of this obvious(?) sarcasm is the statistics of the game are derived from more rolls than I have time or money to witness....you could have achieved similar success with $50 total ($54 actually)....instead of max odds on the point ($40) to begin with, you could have gone single odds ($10) and place bet the balance on the inside numbers (OK $34 instead of $30)....with the payouts from the place bets, you could have either press the place bets or added to you pass line odds bet....your gambling episode was an example of how statistics have little effect in the short term....that's why it's called gambling.

The original poster is making the classic mistake of casino gambling - thinking that the "expected outcome" based on statistics will happen over the course of a 10 minute roll.

The house will win in the long run. But we do not play in the long run, we play in a series of short runs. And in the short run, anything can happen. And even a two or three hour session does not qualify as the long run.

I was just playing Saturday night where the shooter threw 8 straight sevens on the come out. We have all seen a table where the twelve is rolled back to back to back. That is about a 50,000 to 1 likelihood of occurring.

So yes, certain bets have a lower house edge than others. And over the course of many days at many craps tables, the casino will make more money from players who bet the 64 across than those who play the pass line with 4 times odds. But in an average session of 60 minutes or so, anything can happen - good or bad. It is why we play.

I thought 12 rolled back to back is 1 in 1296. Is my math flawed?

    You are correct: 36x36 = 1296

    i believe odds against 12, 12, 12 are 35*35*35 = 42,875 to 1

No there's 36 options on the dice.

    So it's 36x36x36 options and 1 outcome.

    Hey nate:
Surprised you have not seen it....I actually saw it last week in Atlantic City...nobody on it of course. I hit on it once about three years ago in Kansas City Started with a $2 midnight. But not enough guts to do a full parlay. Just pressed it to $5 and then $20. Put $50 on the next throw - it was aces!

And for the others, I said about 50,000 to one for back to back to back. Let's not quibble.

My mistake.....i thought that because odds against a 12 are 35 to 1, that odds against 3 consecutive 12's was 35*35*35

Yeah and then the next roll some guy could go BTB hitting points one and done without hitting any place bets.

If you play craps long enough you'll see everything.

You are not playing long enough to see that the way you play will give you the best chance to stay at the table while the place betters will be long gone.
You cannot alter or beat the math in the long run.
