. . because if I had gone time after time and never won, I'd be like one of my friends or relatives who doesn't gamble. "a waste of time", they call it.

However, that wasn't the case with me, I am not ahead over the 35+ years of gambling but I consider it my "entertainment".

2014 was the best year ever. (14) W2-G jackpots and I still lost money Not counting comps. If you count comps I believe that I was between $3-5K up.

I swore that 2015 would NOT be the year that "I gave it all back", but after the $10k hit ($7k net) this weekend, all I can think (well, not really) about is making Diamond level at CET.

Do you ever wish that you "didn't"?

I don't know that I ever have. lol

Here's how I look at it. If you enjoy gambling and it does not impact other areas of your life and the result is you qualify for Diamond (or whatever), no harm no foul. If attaining Diamond in and of itself is the goal, then that could be a troubling recipe.

I guess it goes back to the old adage: By hell make sure you get all the comps your normal gambling brings, but don't chase comps just to get the next X or status or that "feeling" of being important or a George or what not. The enjoyment of gambling is where one should be, not out chasing the flashy stuff that might accrue as a result.

I'm thinking that if one is regretting doing something then maybe it's time to re-think if one should continue to do that thing....

I was playing slots before I was a teenager :faint: yeah I know hard to believe but in the UK at the "seaside" kids playing fruit machines as we call them, cherry, lemon, bell etc, was not uncommon. So i have often wondered had I not experienced the "thrill of the win" when I was so young would I have turned out like my parents who just couldnt see the point in playing them at all.:rolleyes2:
How much money I have gambled away over the years doesnt bear thinking about so do i sometimes "wish I that I had never won" YES.
    BUT..........waaaay to late now :evillaugh

I actually wish I "did"... I've lived in Nevada for well over 30 years and finally hit a Royal Flush last year. I've never really gambled all that much, in part because I seem to be a professional donator. I don't care much for the feeling of losing money, so for the last 10+ years confine almost any and all gaming to my visits to Las Vegas. My wife is another story. She's had probably 5 or 6 wins at $5,000 or above (biggest was $10,000) and many $1,200 -$1,500 pays as well. Don't get me wrong... over the long-haul, she's put more in than she's taken out, but she ALWAYS has the feeling she's gonna win, cause she has... I really never have.

Gambling has always been a very thin line between entertainment and just being an idiot and wasting money. I guess with me It's always been like belonging to a "exclusive" club. Card status means a lot, and you enjoy the perks that come with it. In a way, its almost like a time share, but instead of paying upfront and making monthly payments, your future accommodations and comps are judged based on your play. It feels good to be "someone" to the casinos, it's even better when they take care of all the expenses to get there. Playing within budget is always a struggle for me, but I tend to make out alright. I would say just keep doing what brings you enjoyment. As long as it isn't interfering with your responsibilities then screw it and do what makes you happy. I find it really awesome that If I ever need a vacation I can get out of state and have a great time while putting very little money upfront.

for me it's not the winning I find as addictive as the comebacks.

I made an epic comeback on my first real trip to Vegas

down to my last chips on the last night and got it all back in one lucky shoe

    that's like crack.

I sometimes wish I had lost it all that trip instead.

probably would have saved me a lot of money.

but I don't honestly think that way or wish that.

all the experiences in life including all my trips over the years make me who I am today.

if I were to get rid of all of that, I have no idea who I would be or what I would be.

....If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breathe a word about your loss;.....

And—which is more—you’ll be a Man, my son!

I'd have to agree with you shifter. There is not one feeling that replicates the comebacks when you might be markered and TTO'd out, but pull it all out with a small remaining stack.

My only time I regret winning is my first trip I played a lot of craps. Had 3 tables with 30+ minute rolls, it felt soooo easy. :)

10+ trips later I don't play that much craps.

I would say I'd wish I'd never hit the two royals in my first two days of "really" playing video poker...that pretty much set the hook.
However; I REALLY wished I never learned to play craps, and never had a 2 hour roll.

For me it is all about the Entertainment/Vacation value.
I do not chase comps. But they are a welcomed perk.
I don't worry about what my friends or my family thinks.

No regrets here either. I started playing penny ante poker when I was still in grade school and never stopped. Hit Vegas the year I turned 21. Except for maybe 3 trips to Indian casinos here in WI, Vegas is the only place I gamble. NFL & college hoops isn't gambling, right? :evillaugh

Still waiting my wife to win anything big! Best (or worst) thing I ever did gambling-wise was realize that her addiction to Microsoft Solitaire might translate into video poker. Before that she was pretty indifferent to Vegas. Now she's always ready to go. She doesn't care about shows or fancy dinners, just wants to sit at the machines for hours. Despite that she's never had a royal flush in her seven or so years of playing. And I drink while I play. For those reasons we've got to budget or we'd definitely be broke. That means keeping things at the 25 cent max level, or even dropping to nickel max if it's been a really rough day.

It's entertainment to us, and at our level we're certainly not playing for comps. Still, we usually get the room free and some food. We rarely have a winning trip but don't usually get massacred either. Probably drop $5000 to $10,000 a year between Vegas and Reno, and we can handle that. Still, I can see a day when we may miss Vegas. Even downtown it's getting tougher on the "low rollers." Not sure I could adjust to the off-strip places.

I have never won a BIG jackpot in all my years of coming to and living in Las Vegas. My biggest wins have been 150 dollars, and 200 dollars both on Sigma Derby machines.

One trip while at the Dust I could NOT lose. I was playing nickel BJ started with 20 bucks got up to a hundred and cashed out. My girlfriends parents wouldn't stop playing the machines so I bought in for another 20 got it to a hundred and cashed out. I must of done that about 10 or 12 times and went home with ALOT more money than I brought with me. Brought 500 came home with 1200 after a week and that was after spending money on food, gambling, transportation, and entertainment.

But the last few years most of my gambling has been redeeming the many coupons from the LVA, ACG, and whatever other coupons I can get from around town. With the Matchplays and the free slot play (which I always play once and cash out) I am ahead of the game. I am going to try to save all my winnings from the coupons and not spend them so I can see exactly how much I win this year. Last year I did this and I counted up over 500 dollars that I had collected between matchplays and FSP.

OK, just to clarify, I didn't mean to imply that I regretted taking up gambling as a hobby.

I was just wondering "out loud" if my decision would have been altered by earlier experiences.

I have been gambling for over 35 years, and don't regret it one bit. There are worse habits I could have picked up.
