Just wondering if anyone can recommend a decent beer that will be widely available? - ie not an obscure craft beer, although that would be nice too!

Last trip I was drinking Samuel Adams Boston Lager, which wasn't too bad. I generally prefer darker beers, edging towards a porter, but not stout or mild.

I have tried Budweiser, Bud Light, Corona, and the lime flavoured one I've forgotten the name of - and could take or leave them.

We are going to Banger Brewing again to get some 'proper' beer - but looking for something that NYNY etc will have.

I'm from the UK so all American beer seems to be too cold and too fizzy :haha: Thanks for your help.

    Cheers

I’m not sure what good dark beers you can reliably get. But there are a number of flavorful ones (as opposed to Miller/Bud/Coors/Corona etc.) that are available almost anywhere. In addition to the Boston Lager, you can usually find Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, New Belgium’s Fat Tire (a fairly well balanced amber ale) and Blue Moon’s Belgium White style beer at most places on the strip.

There are certainly better beers out there and you can even get some of them comped at a few joints in town. But if you are looking for ones that will be available almost anywhere, the four above are probably your best bets, IMO.

My wife has latched on to Stella. You might like that. It's sort of the one level step up from a Bud or a Bud Light.

I would simply ask them if they have any micro brews, specifically darker ones available.

My guess is you will end up with just Sam Adams as beer selection on the floor just isn't that great. You may be surprised though depending on the casino you are in.

at NYNY, Pour 24 will have an decent selection of beers. Next door at the Monte Carlo they have The Pub. Their selection is very good. I know they carry Tenaya Creek which is local to Las Vegas. Most decent places will have stuff from Stone Brewing, Sierra Nevada, New Belgium, Deschutes, Lagunitas, and Anchor as those are three of the bigger brewers on the west coast. There's tons more but those have pretty wide distribution.

If you go downtown the Black Chip Porter at Main Street Station is pretty good especially for the price!

    This stuff right here. :nworthy:

On a matrix of availability and quality, Sierra Nevada Pale, Stone IPA or Deschutes Mirror Pond are perhaps the most ubiquitous good brews out west (to my tastes) -- Sierra Nevada probably takes the availability nod. Most of the Sam Adams products leave me flat, as do most of the American-style "micro"-wheats that are rather readily available. As noted above, with Pour 24 and the pub at MC at hand, you will find something to your liking. If you are a porter fan, give Anchor Porter from the City a try if you find it. The West Coast is still in the throws of a total love affair with hops, so be forewarned if you typically drink a lot of browns and porters.

I'm a Fat Tire fan. I have a half rack in the fridge right now.

Ok, we need a little East Coast representation here. My local craft brewery is Victory and they have limited distribution in Vegas.

I'm a big fan of Prima Pils, a hoppy Pilsner style. Also you might see something called Golden Monkey which is a Belgian Tripel style, this won a gold medal at the Great American Beer Festival. It's 9.5 %, so proceed with caution. You might see Dirt Wolf, this is a double IPA, very tasty. Finally, Dogfish Head brewery has better distribution out west and their 60 Minute and 90 Minute IPA's are great, you should be able to find either of these.

Can't speak for temperature, it will be hit or miss but the better beer bars should be able to pour a proper 14 oz. Pint.

Belgian Tripel beers are the nectar of the gods. Delirium, Duvel, Chimay. All are big names, and none disappoint. My favorite I've ever tried was called Witches' Brew. I have trouble finding it regularly, but if you're a tripel fan it's one that should be added to your list. I've yet to find one made domestically that can stand up to the imports. Many craft breweries make decent attempts, but all seem to be missing something.

You guys want pancakes to go from Bud Light, Bud and Corona to Belgian Tripels?!? Baby steps folks, baby steps. Lets ease pacakes into some higher grade industrial swill (Bass, Heineken, Sierra Nevada, Stella, Leinenkugel, etc.) before introducing Belgian Tripels. You can't go straight from multiplication tables to calculus!

I think if you look at the OP's post, the "arithmetic" beers aren't in the mix, anyway, as the starting point appears to be porters.

If you're a video poker player I'd go over to the Linq and play at the TAG bar. Great beer selection and they comp most of them. That way you could play and sample different ones. If you're downtown, the Long Bar at the D has a pretty good selection of beers, again comped for VP players.

Other than that.. you can just ask your waitress, "Which dark beers, other than Guinness, do you have?"
