I called Riviera at 5 pm today to confirm a (1 night) reservation on May 24th at the Riviera....
...because I could not get the website to recognize my confirmation number.

When I called the reservation /front desk customer service agent had a pause to her voice.
She said that she was very sorry but they had just found out that today that they are closing on May 4th at noon.

They are still accepting reservations through may 3rd.

I'm wondering if they will walk the existing/paid reservations to another property or not.
I booked and prepaid through a 3rd party so I might be S.O.L.
My only option might be to accept a refund and rebook at another hotel.

Wow. Never frequented Riviera much but it is iconic and one of the view older casinos left. I'll have to stop in during my April trip.

Definitely one place I'll need to hit up on my trip to be sure I get a chip for my collection. It'd the first closing casino since I decided to start collecting and I'd be mad to miss it.

Ditto to stopping in and adding to the chip collection.

I've been following the news about the possible demise of the Riv for the past couple of weeks. Decided to book one of their suites for a couple nights in late April...going to give the "old girl" one last fling.

Anyone know what will happen to existing bookings in June, do they rebook elsewhere or just refund?

There is meant to be a Celtic Supporters Convention being held at the Riviera from 7-14th June which obviously won't happen now.

My personal rules for an adder to a chip collection is that I must gamble there, even if it is just one pull on a slot machine.

I haven't been to the Riviera since 1989, so it qualifies. However, I made a chip run in November (during the SEMA show) and they wanted $30 for parking so I didn't bother. I was also in Vegas for the Super Bowl. Had they announced the closing then, I could have made it.

Now I am going to have to beg online for someone to get one for me...

Is there any chance the casino will remain open longer, and the May 4th closure (Star Wars day btw, they should do something special) is specifically about the hotel? I'm making my first trip to Vegas at the end of May, and I'll be pretty bummed if I miss seeing the Riviera by such a narrow margin.

I don't know how these things are generally done, but I would think that you'd keep the casino open as long as possible to keep generating revenue until the construction is set to begin.

I wonder what will become of my favorite pinball machine from my youth in perfect working order, that's there. I guess it will be sent back to the Pinball HOF. My high score will be reset once they unplug it.

Capitalize on the crazy hotel prices for the Mayweather/Paquiao fight and close the doors that Monday. Smart. I'll be there the weekend prior and I'll have to stop in and say my goodbyes.

Riviera should have waited until AFTER Rock In Rio to close ...on Memorial Day weekend!
But, LV Convention expansion is moving ahead at lightning speed.
I can see why they would want a presence on the strip and they have a monorail stop.
Now they just need to get the monorail station at the airport!!!

I have no idea what will happen with my paid for reservation that I made through Expedia for May 24th.
I originally booked on black Friday.
But now prices are crazy high for Sunday May 24th and I'm not sure why!

Expedia had me on hold while they called Riviera to confirm the closing....
.....they said that there was no announcement from Riviera regarding the closing or what their policy is for anyone affected by the closing.

Expedia gave me the option to:
1.) Wait & see if Riviera was going to "walk" prepaid reservations to another property.
2.) Rebook with another hotel & pay the difference
3.) Accept a refund and take care of it on my own.

I'll be stopping by in March to gamble a bit and say my goodbyes to one of the last of the legacy joints on the Strip. I've often wondered what will go through our minds when they announce the shutdown and demolition of places like NYNY, Excalibur, TI, etc. It's just a matter of time on the ever-changing Strip.

Yeah, that's my rule too (in fact, I take it to the point where I have to play a table game so my chip was "in play"--even if it wasn't "in action"). For me, the slot pull wouldn't be enough. I actually just started this, so I'm sure I'll have to kill this rule eventually. Maybe. You say you haven't been there "since 1989"...I assume that at the time you were there last, you weren't collecting?

That's an interesting take that, for some reason, I hadn't contemplated. I've always read the "Oh, that was my home base for a long time" or "That was where I stayed in my first trip" and never thought that could be me. But you're right. Excal is probably going to go eventually (and that was where I stayed on my first trip), so thinking of that is intriguing.

Average age of a property before demolition or rebrand on the strip is 42 years. Cut that in half with the Monte Carlo, and it makes me think we're entering an age when some of the later theme properties might survive an average of +/- 21 years before they're repurposed or replaced.

First time in Vegas in 1989, then not at all until 2005. Also once a year in '06, '07 and '08, as well as spring '09.

In the fall of '09, we started the yearly poker trip with the guys. Being my sixth trip in about four years, I had bought just about all of the souvenirs that I could want when it struck me... for $1, I can get a souvenir with a logo. Started collecting on the spot.

I only made one other retroactive purchase as I bought a Stardust chip on eBay (stayed there for the 2006 Super Bowl weekend). Other than the Showboat and Desert Inn, I can't think of any other place I played that I haven't later gotten a chip from (since that 09 trip, I was able to get Tropicana, Sahara, Imperial Palace and Flamingo)

Excalibur, NYNY, Luxor, Monte Carlo will never be demolished. However, City Center is being demolished as we speak, that's a good thing:wink2:
