I want to plan a trip around the Riviera implosion. Never seen a Vegas implosion except on YouTube...looks cool.

What is the most reliable way to get an implosion date?

How far in advance is the implosion date released?

Once an implosion date is set, does it usually change?

Only thing I can speak to is the changing. I've seen different implosions around the country be delayed up to a week for weather however Vegas weather is generally pretty consistent although the potential for high winds would likely be the biggest obstacle but not often you get super high winds for more than 2-3 days in a row.

Don't know any specifics, but I'd imagine with all the permits that need to be in place to implode a building, the date would be set well ahead of time and probably not likely to change. Probably plenty of asbestos in that building. Be sure to stay upwind.

I'd agree that you should have at least a couple months notice of an implosion date. Just make sure you give yourself a couple days leeway incase weather happens and it gets delayed. Hate to plan a trip for the implosion and have it scheduled for Friday and you fly out Saturday only to see it delayed to Saturday when you're leaving. Although it'd be cool if it corresponded with your take off and you could see it from the sky lol.

They like to keep those type of things quiet so they don't get as many lookie loos when they do the detonating. Not saying that they won't release a date, but I think it's unlikely.

I think Riviera may be imploded in the early morning hours without much fanfare, sad to say.
On the other hand, i was in Vegas in Bally's parking lot when Steve Wynn commenced the firing of Treasure Island cannons from Buccaneer Bay to the Dunes implosion to make way for Bellagio. Something i'll never forget.
Riviera has been a fixture on the Strip since the dawn of mankind. I would hope Riviera will get the respect it deserves by having similar events that many people can plan their vacation around.

Its always seemed the opposite to me: they seem to market and promote the implosions so they can get people to come out for it.

Isn't all this Riv implosion talk just speculation, or did I miss the announcement?

Yes, it's speculation. What we do know is the Riviera will be demolished. What we don't know is how that demolition will occur. The crew here apparently believes it will be imploded - they may or may not be right.

The concerns about weather are legit. When the Clarion was imploded (which I witnessed) the max acceptable safe wind speed was set at 10 mph. About four hours before the event, winds were gusting to 20 mph+. But, as we all know, things settled down and it all worked out.

The situation is seems perfect for demo via implosion, there's no other buildings in close proximity. I'd be shocked if they didn't implode, that's the Vegas way.

Whether the convention center wants to make a deal of it or not, because of the permits, the date will be public. But before there is even talk of it, the sale has to close and they have to set a timetable for closing. If rumors are true, you'd be looking at August for a closing date. It would probably take another couple months before they clear it out and sell off fixtures. It probably wouldn't happen before late fall.

Depends on which rumors turn out to be true... I've read it could close as soon as May 4th which would lead to a likely summer implosion and August 20th has been another rumored date that would lead to a fall implosion. Just keep your ear to the ground and stay on top of it.

Sounds like they are not taking reservations past May 2 or 3rd.

Yeah I've heard the same which tends to make May 4th more likely than August.

IIRC the Stardust was closed for quite some time before it was actually blown up.

The last night the Riviera will accept reservations for in May 3rd.
Riviera is closing at NOON on May 4th.

    No announcement on Riviera website.
All reservations past May 3rd will result in an error.

I'm curious if Riviera will walk existing reservations to another property or not.

They have rather a lot of stuff to liquidate and clear out between closing and imploding. Not to mention a bunch of prep for the implosion, assuming it goes that way.

As to whether it will be an "event" or a morning type thing, I always had the impression that part of the reason for the daytime events of the past was promotion of the new casino to come. Being that Riviera will not be replaced by a casino, I'm not sure how much fanfare I would expect. Far easier to organize an early morning demo.

The last one with fanfare was the Stardust, I believe. They no longer really promote them because they don't want to worry about traffic and crowd control.

Many of the more recent ones went just like the Clarion last month. Word gets out in regards to the date, then it just sort of happens.

Yeah there will be a lot to liquidate but they will close May 4th and they'll start removing stuff the 5th. Most of the guys like tables, chairs, lighting fixtures will be removed and likely warehoused until sale. They could have it cleared out by end of May if they really wanted to. I'd be shocked if it was still standing by September 1.
